    Loud Michelin Pilot Sport AS3+??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm coming off of PSS and wanted something that would last a bit longer and do a bit better in the cold so I replaced them with AS3+ and they are fine until I get to 60mph and they start howling and are louder from about 58-65mph than my worn PSS. Went back to the tire store and they said that was expected for an All Season which I didn't think would be the case. I figured I stickier summer tire would be louder than a harder all season...I only have about 40 miles on them so far and going to put some more miles on them to see if they break in or something.

Has anyone else had experience with this? All reviews I read said the AS3+ was good in the comfort and noise department. This is really my first set of All Season tires in a really long time and never had them on my S6. Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance

I just put them on my car and they don't seem any louder than the stock Pirelli's or Conti DWS I've run in the past.

My father has had two sets of the AS3 on his Mercedes and they get stupid loud if they don't wear perfectly even. I found them to be very loud overall. For all seasons I highly highly reccomend the conti pure contact. They're one of continentals cheaper tires but dear god they're good for the money. I've had them on my B8.5 allroad, my saab 9-3, and I'll be putting a set on my B5 S4 soon. The set on my allroad lasted well over 50k miles, was pretty quiet, always smooth, and shockingly grippy in deep snow/ ponding roadways. Also consistently notice 3 mpg better highway on my cars when running these vs others.

But for spirited stuff....PSS or bust

Semi-related, but I have been running Pilot Super Sports for about 10 years now. Awesome tires, but they are very loud on the highway.

Is there another summer tire that people recommend that might be close to the performance but maybe a little bit quieter?

I'm at 120 miles with a new set of Conti Extreme Contact DW and find them as loud as my Winter Pirelli's. I had a set of the ContiSilent tires on my 21" HRE set last year and couldn't believe how quiet they were.

I went the other way - AS3 to PSS. I don't have sound-meter readings to back up this impression, but I'd say that the PSSs might be slightly quieter overall. Neither is a loud tire, IMO, at least not compared to Pirelli PZeros or Continental DWs.

If you're not happy with them, will the tire store take them back? That's one of the reasons I buy from Discount Tire - they (really do) take them back if you're not satisfied.

I agree. I've been driving the Michelin PS A/S tires since introduced. Each version seems louder than the last. The A/S3 Plus DO howl at 60mph and it whines as well. I just turn up the music. They're still worth it for the A/S aspect and the grip in the rain is superb. They look nice on the car too!

Thanks for all the info. Don't get me wrong the A/S3+ seem very comfortable and quiet as long as I am <60mph or >75mph. There is some slight whirring that I got with my PSS's however between 60-70 they howl worse than my PSS's did when they were completely worn. Anyways sounds like this is to be expected and I either need to deal with it or swap them out for PSS (or new version) and just deal with getting 20k for a set of tires or go with a Conti's which seem to be slightly more quiet....

I have them on an S4 and they're WAY quieter than the stock Contis that I replaced at 10K. They were already shot.

Let them break in and soften up a bit. I had that issue when I first bought them, I'm running 255/40/19 though.
They were hard and a bit loud, sticky as hell too. They've soften up quite a bit about 1500 miles in

    Loud Michelin Pilot Sport AS3+??

Mine are about the same, I assumed they are just unbalanced since they cause a vibration between 70-80 too. Only 500 miles on mine in 275/35. Still much better than the p-zeros that came on the car. As a side note I had PSS on my last car and thought they were nearly silent, hard to compare given they were on a modified performance car and the A/S 3+ are on an A7.

I'm also running 275/35-20 in the Pilot AS 3+ on my S7

I don't find them appreciably louder then my Pilot Super Sports on my Porsche, but totally different car. I had Eagle F1s on the car before the AS3+ and they were a little quieter, but I love the wet/dry/cold/wear combo of the AS 3+ The S6/S7 is a pretty quiet car overall, so some people are more sensitive to the normal harmonics of each tire at a particular speed. Just turn up the music or drive faster ;-)

I have AS3+ tires and they are loud as well. I wouldn't say they were louder than the Pirellis that they replaced. You also need to consider that the AS3+ is about as high performance as it gets for an all season tire.

There is a particular cloverleaf on-ramp that I like to use for testing in my area. It's pretty long and fairly consistent radius so I can slowly accelerate to the point where the front tires start to wash out and understeer. With the stock 255/35R20 Pirelli PZERO summer tires I could make it to 61 before losing grip at the front. With the 255/35R20 Michelin Pilot Sport AS3+ tires that I have on the car now I can reach 59 before losing the front end. That's seriously close to matching the Pirellis, which are summer only tires. Pretty amazing for an all season tire.

I put AS3s on my A6 with 20" wheels and they were pretty quiet. I traded my A6 for an S6 with AS3s installed and they were so much louder on the S6. I've put about 10k miles on my current set and they seem to be quieting down nicely and I still have a lot of tread left. Time will tell how they fare as they get a few more mile on them. Not thinking I'll go with the AS3s again when it is time to replace the Michelins.

Also, nobodeuno I'm right outside Raleigh if you ever need a VCDS cable!
