    Manual shifter rebuild

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm thinking about buying this shifter rebuild kit from ECS Tuning for my B6 A4 manual 6 speed

Does anyone have any experience with installing this, and could possibly lead me to a write up on how to install it

    Thanks!

that only replaces a small part of the linkage, the ball joint by the selector shaft.

link is an 01E but its the same idea on 02X that you have.

On my 02X that ball joint was really worn out. The rest of the linkages were fine.

I don't know if anyone on US forums has done a write-up yet. Maybe the first will be you? me?
    wonder if ELSA has it.

Speaking of that area, maybe there's some other stuff you could do while you're in there? such as selector shaft seal.
maybe depending what site you order from, to rack the total up enough to qualify for Free Shipping.

can't you see it if you remove the shift knob/boot? You'll need to replace the clamp.
I don't think mine has much play.

but as for the one at the transmission, I haven't checked it.
well I guess if yours had it, then why wouldn't all of them.

The JHM kit doesn't come with that bushing. If you put in a JHM shifter, you will now have a short shifter with a sloppy bushing. Seems to make sense to fix or check out the front bushing first or do both. Mine was quite worn. I'm pretty sure my transmission isn't the only one to have this happen.

My shifter does not have slack, but certainly doesn't feel slick like a new shifter in my friend's 2015 Audi. I wonder if I need to rebuild the whole thing to restore the feeling if I don't have any free play besides side-to-side needing some lubrication, so it springs back to central neutral position easily.

Most times my shifter, when in neutral, will come back to center if pushed to the right or left and then let go. However, sometimes it will stick if pushed to the left...how does one lube this?

Its that bushing in the first post of this thread that causes that. My shifter was worse than yours. It would almost stay where you left it. The problem is the bushing, and the cap (the black plastic, gold metal inner unit pictured above) as stock has a small hole in it. This allows water to penetrate and dilute/wash out the grease. Voila, stiff shifter. You can take it apart and lube it, but by the time you have hit the point its stiff, the bushing likely needs replacement from wear. My pivot ball was super rusty and scaled too. 3M wheel fixed that up, new ECS bushing kit did the rest.

I've replaced mine obviously. Hardest part is getting shifter arm back through the rubber boot to the shifter box after replacement. Not a ton of room up there, and I got big hands. Other than that, the bushing socket is crimped into the metal arm, but a pair of pliers to straighten things allows replacement. No real DIY needed. Just remove the assembly from the trans on both sides then the shifter and go to work...

My bad... I was thinking the shifter kit and forgot about the linkage upgrade kit.

    Thanks for the info.

I do wish there was a DIY as I like to orientate myself to the ground before I step off for battle ;)

JHM's site has detailed DIYs for their parts, should be the same process as OEM.
