    A6 3.0 Prestige vs S6

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Looking for some advice. Starting to shop for a new daily driver. Found some nice 13+ A6 Prestige 3.0t's for around $28,000 with 50,000 miles. I would do an APR stage 1 flash, some wheels and possibly a drop. This would only put me in the low 30s. I know the 3.0 is a pretty reliable engine and really wouldn't too much about reliability.

I also have found 13+ S6's for around $45K that are CPO. I don't know if I would want to buy an S6 that didn't have some sort of warranty.

Anything I'm overlooking? Is the S6 overkill? That 4.0 TT V8 is an awesome motor and the DCT is nice.

Sorry if tis has been covered before.

If you can afford it, S6 all day. I just got a '14 Prestige Sport, which is a great car, but does not compare to the S6. I'd certainly have chosen the S6 if I could have swung the extra $10k+.

For a daily I'd say A6 and use the rest of the money for something else.

Both are great but I would get the S6 CPO.

As someone who owns a 2014 A6 3.0t prestige... Hold out for the s6 if you have the need for speed. My 3.0t is stage 2, and yes it's pretty quick off the line(as long as you come to a complete stop to let the transmission downshift to 1st), but I do the majority of my driving on the highway and I feel like this car is slow to overtake other cars when passing. My problem is my other car is a healthy stage 3 2.7t a6, which has monster torque to help make passing people(even in top gear) a breeze.

Fwiw, I paid 32k for my 2014 with sport package and black headliner last summer. 51k miles (I didn't want a warranty since these engines are pretty reliable and I planned to tune immediately).

What stage 2 do you use and dual pulley?

A healthy stage 2 dual is near as fast as a stage 1 S6.

EPL stage 2. Planning on going dual pulley, waiting on cooling first(apr says another 2 weeks for their cps). Don't want to spend $2k on a radiator since there are other things I want to do to this car this summer(sway bars, bushings, and lowering springs).

From guy who is selling his nine month old A7 (with some basic mods) to get an S7 I say if you want power get the S6!

Nothing beats the torque of the V8.

I used to own a '13 A6. The 3.0T is a great engine. I loved the instant power of the supercharged engine. Then I test drove a S6 and ended up with one in 2 days. It all depends on what you want. The A6 3.0T is a great DD but if you want the cool exhaust note along with power to play, the S6/S7 is the way to go. Put a tune on that V8T and it turns into a beast. Both are great choices but the S6 gets my vote.

I've got the '14 A6, got it in March of this year. Currently in the works to make a deal on trading this in for a '15 S6. I'm right with gta7 on that one. S6 gets my vote.

Depends. If it was purchased somewhere in 2012 (which these auto manufacturers like to release car models 6 months before the new year) it could only be a year and a half. But somewhere in that ballpark range.

My old 2013 was purchased September 2012, so the CPO was good until September 2018.

I continually look at S6s, but still absolutely love my stg 2 A6, and can't justify the financial hit at the moment. But when I do look, I have to look at '14s, and pretty soon that bar will be raised to '15s.

Yeah I hear you on that one. That's exactly why I'm looking at the 15's now myself. I've found a few that are in really good condition with low miles but they also have a high price tag but I'm making the leap for it and hopefully making a deal and getting one in the next couple weeks.

Sounds like you are not too picky with options, lucky for you. I spent around a year looking for the perfect S6. It was delivered on Sunday and I can tell you the extra money will be worth it.

Not the course the OP has chosen. The price difference between new to 2 years old make it very compelling to buy used. I am not prepared to spend ~$100,000 on a car having a 1.5 year old and another one in the plans. The garage broom almost got drug halfway down the side of it yesterday morning.

Uh what? Depends how you define "near as fast". On the highway a stage 1 s6 pulls a few car lengths on a dp 3.0t up to 120. Gets even worse after that.
Near as fast as a stock s6, that's more like it.

Thank you everyone for taking the time out to write a post. It was super helpful. I should mention I do have a "fast" car I drive on weekends.

I also wanted to mention my daily drivers see 20,000 miles a year. Would this be a problem in the S6? With the S6 pulling roughly $20,000 over an A6 Prestige it's something I have to think about.

Hows your daily commute like mostly highway or lots of stop and go traffic?

If you want a daily, the A6 is definitely the better option of the two. Cheaper to purchase, I'm sure to maintain as well, lower insurance, and it's got some pep in its step too. It's definitely not a slow car amongst your average daily.

The S6 on highway has good mpg in stop and go traffic its bad. Since u have a fast weekend car then the A6 might be a better choice for DD.

If you don't want to spend extra money, I'd stick with an A6 since you already have a fast car. I wanted something fairly fast and a DD so I went with a S6. I don't drive much so it was hard to justify having 2 cars -- a "fast" car and a DD. The A6 is no slug and if you want more performance out of it, just get a stage 2. If the parking situation at work was better, I'd be driving a 911TTS as my DD but that's a whole different forum.

I have an A6 TDI (wifes car but I regularly drive it) and an RS7 (I know not the exact comparison but I can offer some insight). Even though the interior is 'similar' - the two cars cannot be more different in the way they drive and feel (on the road and emotionally).

After driving the RS7 and hopping into the A6, it feels very 'vanilla' and 'numb' to me. Yes - it has the great 'audi' feel - but with a more vague steering, suspension that is just 'there' (sport package A6), and the various interior and exterior bits that separate the cars as well. The A6 provides for a much more 'zoned out' driving experience if that makes any sense.

All the elements of a 'great car' are there on the A6 (and it even has great pickup with 400+lb ft of torque) - but missing is the feel that the 'S' and 'RS' cars give you. I always felt like the 'S/RS' cars have a much better driver-car-road connection over the non-s counterparts.

I will agree that the A6 is a spectacular daily driver - albeit missing some of the 'emotional' aspect of being connected to a car. I am not a 'speedy' driver - but love the feel of acceleration of the V8TT and grunt over the V6TDI in the A6 and the 3.0 Supercharged engine of my last S4. It's not always about straight line speed or whether its a 'fast' car or not - but how the entire package works together.

I would def do S6 over A6 if that's an option.

That's only if you purchase a prior CPO from a private party and transfer the remainder of their CPO warranty to you. Otherwise if purchasing directly from an Audi dealer, the CPO warranty starts when the original warranty expires or on the date of purchase if the original warranty has already expired. IE: if you purchase today from an Audi dealer a 2013 CPO that was originally sold Jan 2013 (original 4 year warranty expired), your 2 year CPO warranty is effective to May 2019.

To the OP, as others have said, if you can justify the additional cost, definitely go with the S6 :) And if you want a longer term warranty but don't want to pay the premium of a CPO, you can always purchase the Audi branded extended warranty instead. You just need to have some original warranty left to qualify. That's what I'm doing with my 2013 S7.

Ever been in a stage 3 b5 s4 or c5 a6? The stage 2 3.0t is quick, but my butt dyno is tuned to the power from that car.

I drive an S7, and my dad had an A6 3.0T. I would get the S again, but the A6 is a great car as is. His was a Premium Plus, 18" wheels, almost no options, and I always appreciated the pace, linearity, capability, and tech. It's not obvious that the S is worth the upgrade if you're dallying it and have another fun car to drive. Standard A6 seats are terrible, though.

You just need to have some original warranty left to qualify. That's what I'm doing with my 2013 S7.
Any idea what that warranty costs?

Age may play a factor. I'm in my 50's and my stage 1 A6 prestige with sports suspension, modified exhaust, and air intake, provide all the thrills and speed I need from my car.
At my age I'm not out looking to street race anyone, nor track my daily driver. I've owned many Audi's, and I'm just fine not having an "S" badge on my car. Just two cents from the senior section.

... Now "get off my lawn"

Yes, but it depends on your vehicle, mileage, term, deductible, and dealer that's quoting.

For my 2013 S7 in the 25k - 35k mile tier with my requested $250 deductible, I was quoted below:

    Fidelity Platinum w/ $250 deductible
    2 yr / 24K - $1686.00
    3 yr / 36K - $2405.00
    4 yr / 48K - $3348.00
    5 yr / 60K - $4095.00
    6 yr / 60K - $4403.00
    6 yr / 72K - $4881.00

Warranty term starts when you purchase and mileage is in addition not total of what's on your odometer. IE: My S7 has 30k miles, if I were to purchase the 6yr/60K miles, I would be covered until May 2023 / 90K miles.
Warranty administrator is Fidelity which was the original Audi branded administrator until they switched to Safe-Guard for Audi Pure Protection. Both are sold at Audi dealers, but my quote is from Troy of www.fd-warranty.com(they have Audi, VW, Porsche, Ford, Toyota, Lincoln and some other dealerships). Google him and you'll find he's mentioned in the subforums of Audizine and other Audi, VW, Toyota, Ford, etc. boards. Get a quote from him and compare him to a quote from your local dealer, I did and my local dealer could not come close to matching.

FYI I don't personally know or work for Troy or the dealerships he's affiliated with, just sharing the research I've done for myself.
