Worth resurfacing original rotors with 40,000 miles?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just crept over 40,000 miles on my 2010 S4. Original rotors, put akebono's on at 12000miles.

Think it's worth trying to resurface? Or should I just replace?

They vibrate a bit coming off higher speeds.

    Thanks in advance.

As long as they are thick enough why not? OEM rotors usually can be cut a couple times. If you aren't comfortable with that replace :).

Even if you save $30 I would resurface them. They will definitely have life left

Because they have 40k miles and they STOP your 4000 lbs pile of scrap metal from smashing into other piles of scrap and you can get new ones all around for 3-400. This shouldn't even be debated or a question. Do not ever cheap out or skip over stuff like that for a few hundred bucks, it's irresponsible and stupid

Sometimes they only need 1 or 2 thousandths.... I've cut many OEM rotors on multiple platforms and never had a pulsation problem. There are specifications for a reason, if they are thick enough then you're fine. Otherwise they would require rotor R2 every brake pad change.

To each his own, but let's not get crazy and make it seem like cutting the rotors will make the car not stop.

There is a correct range for thickness for rotors. As long as they will still be in tolerance after turning then its fine to resurface. The only time this doesn't apply is when they are warped, then they are scrap reguardless of tolerance. To each their own, but why spend 3-400$ when all that is needed to be spent is 30-40$. Just my .02.

New Zimmerman front rotors are $150. Meyle are even cheaper. Also if you buy them from fcpeuro you get free replacements for life.

You could have them cut down for about $20 per rotor, buy new pads and be gtg. Rotors don't warp, that's a misconception.

I'd prefer to just get the cut. Pads only got 27,000 miles on them. Could I still use them if they got some pad left with rotors that are machined?

    Sure.

First step is to measure the thickness of the rotors. It makes little sense to turn them if you'll still need to replace soon anyway.

I apologise I should have used the term "sinking" but most here would not have a clue what I was talking about. Its true that rotors do not warp but the surface in between the vanes can "sink" and disrupt braking. Most source this to warped rotors but in all actuality the rotor itself is still true, just the surface area has become uneven.

So why does my steering wheel vibrate like crazy under braking only when brakes get really hot?

Typically it's Pad deposits that have bound to the rotor.... It's not the metal rotor warping - it's pad debris adding in spots - which sometimes can be removed by redoing the "Bedding Process:
