Capristo Exhaust RS5 - resonated versus non resonated

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
hey guys, thanks for welcoming me to the forum. I stopped by SupremePower today, who were really great!

Anyways, I decided on getting a Capristo exhaust. My car ('15 RS5) is otherwise stock. I will plan on putting an intake and some other fun stuff in a few months, but just starting with the exhaust.

I wasn't sure to go with resonated or non resonated. Per mops, the cabin noise is similar between the two, its really just the note of the exhaust. The videos posted online are tricky, as most don't mention res/nonres, and some have other mods, such as AWE Downpipes (probably in the future for me too).

Anyone have good examples of the resonated versus nonresonated? Some of the videos on youtube that I've seen an love the sound are here following:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4NaBO6LErY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XkBbclEHL4
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyhA07obLiE

---> this video makes it seem I am more the "resonator" type of person: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOsj6XcLpmM

This cabin noise is totally do-able: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REkOXZLDSZI

These have a different note and not sure, likely other mods in place, like downpipes, etc.

    Appreciate your input.

Don't focus too much on the sound level but more on the tone. Many things affect how loud the video ends up being like mic quality, placement, etc. With that said a lot of us ordered through mops and I believe he normally pushes the no-res version. I was surprised at first since it was missing a resonator so I called them up asking if they missed a part haha. No regrets in getting the no-res and I'd do it again the same way all day.

thanks PEM. Yes, not trying to figure out loudness/DB, I'll fix the original post, but definitely the tone. Between the videos I posted up there, there is a difference between the two. If anyone in the LA area is willing to show a res and nonres, count me in, ha!

Thanks. Accounting for the tone and not decibel level, what do you think your car sounds more like -- the first group of videos or the second?

That gray rs5 in the third video sounds like it has resonators still on. The one where you commented that the cabin noise is doable sounds very much like my no-res system. Then your third to last and second to last video with the wrapped blue rs5 tooling around the city definitely was either x-piped or with downpipes and maybe even both.

Imo there is nothing wrong with res. Until someone with a non res car comes along. Frankly if you want to make the car louder I think you should go Non Res and prepare to drive in manual mode to avoid droning lol.

Yeah I remember it being straight DPs and either X or straight res delete. A little loud for me with the straight DPs.

I like both res and non-res. Mine is res and sometimes I wish it was louder and sometimes it's too loud. 99% of the time it's perfect and the intake deepened it nicely.

Anyone know if there's a price difference between the two? If it's cheaper it's a no brainer to go non-res. Then put savings towards intake!

Again I'm just guessing based on the sound so I'm not sure if I'm even right haha. I also have not heard what my car sounds like from the outside since I'm the only one that drives it. Definitely take my comments with a grain of salt. I believe the no res system is cheaper. Maybe mops can chime in on that one

I didn't let anyone drive my car the first 2 years I owned it. Now I let all my friends and family take it for rips because I love listening and watching it take off hahahaha

Like most on this forum Mops pointed me in the right direction. I have the Non Resonated version and could not be happier!

heard res and non res in person. non res sounds so much better imo. res needed downpipes to sound anywhere close to non res, and even then, the non res sounded louder and better

I would imagine non res will drone at low rpm, if I put my car into individual mode and select the exhaust to dynamic so the valves are open all the time, it becomes annoying after only a few minutes.

If you're one of those who wear your baseball cap backwards then I guess you'll love the extra noise, if not, I'd stick with the res, at least you have the option to be civilised if you car about neighbours, etc.

There's a TINY bit of drone when you're in 6th or 7th gear going like 50 on a slight incline that it doesn't bump you down to 5th. Pop it into 5th and drone is gone. If you live in a flat area then it's a non-issue. That or you can pop it into comfort mode to close the valves and it gets real quiet.

I prefer driving with the valves open as that's the reason why I got an aftermarket exhaust in the first place - to unleash that V8 symphony. The only times I have it closed is if I'm on the phone or if I really just want to hear music.

And to be clear, both res and non-res versions have valves so I'm not sure what James was trying to say with sticking with the res to be civilized. With valves closed even on the non-res version it's very civilized.

Thanks for all your input guys. I'm usually never undecided but it's hard to make a decision without hearing it in person I guess!

Going to speak to MOPS on the phone soon and see what he says. Overall, I think I will likely go with res (it's about $100 more expensive) and in the future, I can remove them, if needed. But still want to speak to some more people.

If anyone has any more info, especially whatever this car has (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4NaBO6LErY), I'd love it! lol

anyone in the LA area reading this, let me know know, thanks everyone

Exactly. When u buy sn exhaust u buy for loudness. Dont want loud? Stick with stock

Res with valves open is already loud. Its not civil at all. Non res with valves open just sounds like a beast

Also when both valves r closed they r both equally quiet

Btw i wear backwards baseball caps all the time (;p

Either way you will be super happy. And pay more for gas. I average 11 mpg city because I drive always in manual mode valves open revs never under 2.5k. Thankfully it's a short commute but it's fun and sounds great every day.

I would go with the non res personally. I've heard the res and it was not that loud at all.

thebeen, what did you decide? I'm in the same boat trying to decide between res and non-res. Leaning towards the non-res (as per MOPS recommendation); however, my biggest fear is experiencing a lot of raspiness like i've heard in some videos. Can anyone else chime in? Can you all post videos of you car being driven and specify what we're listening to (res/non-res).

Hi I am having a problem with my capristo exhaust on my Audi s4 b8.5. After I press the command on the remote. On the display screen of the car , mode changes but the valves are not opening or closing. Sometimes they do close but very slightly. Seems something is getting stuck or something is wrong. I don’t know what. I got it checked in a local store here they said it’s the solonoid.i put my finer on the side of the solonoid u can hear some hissing sound on it and it makes very slightly vaccum not much at all. But I don’t trust them. Is there any way I can rectify or you can guide me as to how to figure out what the problem is.
