    Question Signs of mechatronic failure

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
As mentioned on my signature.. i have a 2011 with DSG tune from GIAC and it's around 68k miles. couple questions are:

    1) Is there an average mileage where the mechatronic failures tends to happen?
    2) Are there any signs that one can watch out for? (visual, sound, smell, etc)?

    Thanks

i guess there is no answer to my first question since the miles seems to all over the place. As for signs, people speak of this bucking motion whenever you shift from 1-->2. However, no one speaks of where during the rev range it happens. It sometimes happens to me when i shift (electronically lol) at RPMs below 3k. Above it, i dont see it. I just want to prevent a $5k repair bill.

I had about 76K miles when mine was replaced. The issue was that after about 15 min of DC traffic or hot weather, the shift from 2 to 1 when making a stop I would all of the sudden get a big clunk noise and lunge forward. Since being replaced no more issues. I have 92K
    My car is a 2010.
When I purchased the car new I bought the extra extended warranty. Saved my ass twice: Thermostat and Mech replaced.

Hey, can you explain more? My 2014 does this when I downshift from 2 to 1 below 2000rpm. Is that not normal?

i have aftermarket warranty as well. But they denied a claim for the serpentine belt and S/C drive unit because my car has an after market exhaust. I wonder if they will deny me again if my trans ever gives out.

2014 s4 here. Had the bucking motion from 2nd gear to 1st gear at 14k miles in 2016. At its worst in the stop and go traffic in NYC. Took it to a NJ dealership and they replaced the entire transmission. No bs steps in between from them such as "we'll replace the trans oil" or "no error codes" or even "might need a new mech unit." The service advisor just went for the jugular right out of the gate and said we found some iron content in the tran oil and will be replacing the transmission under warranty. ~2 weeks later the thing was shifting fast and crisp.

I had mine replaced (2010 S4) at no cost due to a CA emissions warranty which was awesome news. I had the horrible bucking from 2nd to 1st (would get increasingly worse if sitting in any traffic). There was a software update available that Audi release to help with this issue. One night I got the notice on my dash that said that there was a transmission malfunction but could continue to drive.

Brought her in and they found that the much unit needed to be replaced. Below are the error codes found. Took 2 days to get my car back but all issues seem to be long gone (at least for now).

Who did you have your warranty through? That's nuts. That'd have my blood boiling.

Can you elaborate on this more please? Your 2010 is out of warranty, but cali has some emissions warranty that helped repair the trans??

fortegra.. the fact they wont cover it pissed me off to no end and i even thinking about getting a lawyer due to the magnusson moss act. But fine prints in the contract which i signed said any modifications to exhaust will void drivetrain. I didnt know what to do after that but just pay for the repairs myself.

I'm not 100% sure really and didn't take the time to read up on it fully. But yes, my car was out of warranty. Took it in and they found the codes. Got quoted $1700.00 if I recall originally to replace the mech board in the trans. I agreed to the work being done not knowing about the warranty but got a call back from my SA who said I have some good news the work will be covered under warranty at no cost.

How do they justify voiding a drivetrain warranty just because of an exhaust? That's ridiculous.

Also, how did the warranty company even find out that you have an exhaust?

They can't justify that there is any correlation. But the contract was signed unfortunately. They sent out an inspector.

I would just cancel that warranty and try to get some of your money back. It's useless.

A lurch downshifting from 2-1 is a sign of mech faluire? iv got this happening mostly when i shift manually. 2012 dsg 86k KM( roughly 53k miles)
New to the car so i have no idea what normal is for this thing.

I have 2010 B8 S4 and the tranny started misbehaving at around 50K miles. All of the symptoms noted above and definitely not just a normal DSG lurch. It got so bad I had to be really careful with nose-in parking not to slam the front of the car into walls. It got to be intolerable driving in heavy traffic. The dealer did a $300 reprogramming that more or less fixed the problem but only after another 2K miles of driving. The dealer also said that the tranny's tiny brain has trouble "adapting" to different driving styles so my wife and I stopped swapping cars for our commutes. Now at 75K the symptoms are creeping back so I have traded for a B9 that will arrive in July. Got a good trade-in appraisal so I'm putting as few miles as possible on the B8 until the new car arrives. Can't wait for the ZF - never imagined I would feel that way!

I'm at 60k and haven't had any issues with the DSG or Mech unit. Knock on wood. I recently had the TCU tuned though, which was well worth it IMO. Time will tell. I'm about out of warranty anyways.

2012 with 50K miles, no issues yet...knock on wood

there will be times where the 2-1 shift gives a little clunk, but nothing major as it only happens in dynamic mode. Auto or comfort is smooth always

I do get a weird hesitation or delay when downshifting though in manual mode. I can change gears and it will take a few seconds for the revs to catch up and popup to where they should be. Happens 4-3, 5-4 mainly and in any mode. Anyone else get this? Im tempted to get a TCU tune with EPL when i pull the trigger on stage 1.

I get some delay on downshifts as well in manual mode. I have a TCU tune from APR too.

So I bought the car with 76k miles on it. I had the dsg fluid and filter changed around 80k miles. I have never received a code for any malfunctions, but on a cold start in first gear the revs will bounce a little like the clutch is not engaging. I do not know what to do because this does not seem like a mechatronic failure as I am not getting any codes.
