    How much to repaint hood?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have about 7-8 pretty large rock chips on my hood along with many smaller cuts or scratches. Almost all of these are limited to the hood. I was wondering how much I would expect to pay to just have the hood repainted?

1.5 years ago I basically did the same thing, except included the bumper. The cost for me was $1200 for the shop for everything, which included suppliers, surface prep, and painting, including blending into the fenders. Came out great. Shop was close to DC, so price might be a bit higher. Just the hood alone I would think could cut that to roughly $550-$650, I'd think.

I could ask about the front bumper as well, there are some small marks on it but nothing major. The front of the car was repainted in early 2015 after an accident so most of it still looks good.

I am taking it to the Audi shop that did the repair/paint after the accident.

What color is your car? If it's anything other than black the fenders should be blended. Doing the hood and blending fenders should be around $650-900 depending on what your local labor rate is.

    Silver.

I actually bought some drcolorchip stuff and its sitting in my garage but there are so many and they are good sizes I just figured it would look bad. I dont mind paying, main thing is I just needed an idea of what to expect range wise.

I'd expect $1000, like others said you'd end up doing the hood and blending fenders for a proper job. Painting anything results in $600 minimum generally. I'd say $900 or so for hood/fenders. When my car got keyed (hood and passenger front door) they painted/blended the hood, front fenders, and both passenger doors for about $1300 so that should give you a rought idea. Personally I'd do the bumper too to guarantee the match if you have the money then xpel it all. Mine matched closely but at a certain angle with certain lighting I can see a slight difference between the bumper and fender

$1000 is an accurate estimate. I had two estimates for painting the bumper and hood: $800 and $1200.

FYI, they can paint only the hood without blending into the fenders depending on where the damage is. Essentially they leave the paint at the edges of the hood alone, blend into that, and then clear coat the entire hood.

From 10+ feet away it will make it look better. Once you get closer it will look like touch up. If you're on the fence about doing it try the touch up first and if you aren't happy do the full job.

Just saw this and I'm......intrigued. Why doesn't black need to be blended and the other colors do? My car is black, btw.

Not apples to apples but I had 2011 B8 avant that I dropped a weight on the hood and the bill was $500 for a new hood (aluminum) + paint. That was from the Audi owned body shop as well.

If its a $1000 you are getting ripped off.

99.99% of us will never find an OEM hood + paint for $500. Your hookup doesn't mean everyone else is getting ripped off.

FYI, it is cheaper to paint an unpainted part than it is to repaint. So i would weigh your options...

Other colors need to be blended because usually no matter how close you can get the paint to match, from one angle or another, the color will be slightly off. For one particular paint code there could be many, many different variants or shades. For example Toyota 1G3, which is a darker gray metallic, there are over 100 different variants in our PPG system. They vary from lighter, darker, coarser, finer, greener, bluer etc. With non solid (metallic or pearl) colors, the way the paint is sprayed, the humidity and how the metallics lay on the panel can make a difference in color.

Although black paint codes can have a few different variants themselves it is hard for our eyes to pick up the differences. Black is the lack of color and does not stimulate the cone cells in our eyes, which are responsible for color vision. If there is a noticeable difference from panel to panel on black it is usually due to the shine in the clear coat. A good buff or coat of wax can usually take care of this.

For that price I would be very concerned about the quality of the part and paint that you got.

FFS what hookup is that? I have no hookup there and its funny that you would think that. Do the math.. S4 hood costs $200 so $800 to paint it is a good deal? Anyone who believes that noise should have their head examined.

Like I said certified Audi body shop did the work, not Earl Schieb.

Audi owned and Audi certified can be completely different things. Just because an Audi dealership owns a auto body shop doesn't mean its certified. Even if a shop is certified it doesn't mean they do great work and use high quality materials. They could just have nice shiny floors and spent a shit ton of money on expensive equipment. Just saying. If the shop charged you $500 for a new aluminum hood (which a quick google search didn't find, all steel), painting and install I guarantee they lost money on that job.

To get a deal like that either the estimator/ service writer had no idea how to write an estimate and they honored it anyway.... Or, they found a perfect used hood in the correct color, buffed and polished it and told you they painted it. Congrats on getting a great deal but close to $1000 is the going rate for a job like this.

Same here on both counts. I was quoted just under $1100 for both hood and bumper and they said the same thing about blending to the edges.

Yeah, I guess the guy with "autobody" in his user name has no idea what he's talking about. Nor do the rest of us who you disagree with.

Be honest - that body shop popped your cherry, didn't it? Because you clearly have no experience at all in this area.

Lol what? Sorry I offended you. I wasn't arguing at all. If anything I was trying to inform and provide a professional point of view of what to expect. $500 for a new hood and to paint it is not what to expect.

I think I paid $800 for the hood last year and my car is black. I too had the same chips all over when I bought it used with 37K miles. It seems the guy who owned it before me would drive 3 feet behind every salt truck he could fine, year round. And he also let his 5 year old wash the car with a wet rag they found in the sand box! It was a real mess.

So on a related note, I was quoted $850 and $680 to repaint the front fascia/bumper. Same shop. Difference in cost was if I removed the bumper and gave it to them. I proposed this because I am doing the crank pulley and can't use the underneath method for install.

I just got three estimates ranging from $900 to $1300 for hood, front bumper (alpine white), all said they would have to blend thru the mid front doors (aka painting half the car). I think I'll do it myself, because it will need it again by next year, (DOT dumps tons of sand/gravel/de-iceing funk).
