    Replacement Clutch Pump Ordered

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I took in the A3 today and the dealership found the Haldex system to be "intermittently working" and will order a new pump. I should have it fixed in a week. You will find the Repair Order below detailing what is being replaced.

So after the dealer’s unconvincing answers, I decided to scan the car out of curiosity and found this code!

    1. By reading this thread. The torque steer and spins during launch raised and eyebrow, but I didn't put the pieces together until reading all this. I'm new to FWD/AWD vehicles!
    2. 25k(miles), but I suspect this has potentially been an issue for 10k
    3. 2016
    4. None on the dash. I did just had my 25k service, and they didn't report anything. It is a bit disconcerting that it doesn't light anything up.
    5. I have an appointment in 2 days with the dealer to take a look. In the mean time, I took this video today....

Note: I didn't know how to force it to run in slow mo, so you have to change playback speed to 0.25 in the youtube settings.

I also noticed that the front wheel lurches forward at the point of launch. Looks scary to me. Thanks again everyone who participated here. Hopefully helps to get my S3 back where it should be!

Is there a revised pump or does it quote the part number for you? Just in case anyone wants to DIY

A user on another forum posted a pic of their pump when they serviced the Haldex. Looks like the newer cars/pumps have a revised filter on the pump, likely to address pump failures due to fouling.

Believe it or not, I just picked up a 2015 Audi S3... one of the earlier builds... love the car so far but...

It was a CPO by a well known Audi dealer in South Florida and somehow it passed the CPO inspection with a broken haldex in the rear. Talk about lack of QC on the dealer's part, I was out of the car for a week and it got fixed after the pump was ordered and replaced. It's an easy job however the part was not available in the USA and had to be shipped via FEDEX from Germany. Audi of North America nor the dealer did anything to satisfy my experience after that so I was left with a terrible first taste of Audi in my mouth. The net symptoms were identical, strong wheelspin, even front wheel hop and engine buckling on launch as no power was going to the rear. After the replacement the car launches like a jet with 0 torque steer, full grip and fantastic handling.

BTW... I come from a BMW 135i that made 430 WHP on E85 and ran 11.9@120 in the 1/4, however the car was super unreliable, had a terrible suspension designed around runflats and the tech was now super old, glad I made the switch... I would not buy another NON M BMW.

I'm reading this thread and I suspect my car may have it.

This past end of December I remember driving in 3-6 inches of snow falling up in Illinois north of Danville and feeling the car quickly lose traction a bit accelerating. I thought putting the drive select into Dynamic mode would provide better traction but nope, it felt slightly more slippery so I put the DS back in Auto and drove cautiously slow. Even turning at slightly snowed intersections you could feel the back slipping. Mind you I thought this was usual snow condition experience of driving an A3 Quattro.

I remember the first winter I drove this car back in December of 2014 and I remember driving over snow slush and the car giving me that slipping away feel, that I realized I needed to get winter tires, and got Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2s for which I drive on every winter since. So to experience slip even with good snow tires and reading this thread got me wondering if the Haldex on my car have been bad this entire time.

I'm at about 45K miles so I'm still under warranty. Perhaps I should do some videos of my car doing launch control to see if there's front wheel spin like others did?

Called them yesterday as I haven't heard anything.

They said the part just came off of backorder and that it should be en route very soon.

    So no, not yet.

    What did the dealer say?

From your video I can assure you your Haldex is trash and needs to be replaced.

When I had my S3, I've since traded it for an S4, My Haldex went out. They replaced THE ENTIRE Haldex unit.

I scanned and had a C111307 ALL Wheel Drive mechanical malfunction. This happened around 21K miles.

Symptoms where the traction control light would flash with just moderate throttle from take off. There were times I would get what seemed like axle hop followed by a loud bang from the rear. When I did launch control it would completely smoke the front tire.

From what Ive gathered, the 15's and early 16's seem to have this problem. My Haldex revision was an F. If you crawl under the car you can see the Haldex part number followed by a letter then dictates the revision. Mine was replaced with a revision H. I believe I have seen some get replaced with a K as well.

Take your service advisor for a ride along with the mechanic and perform a launch. There is no way they deny that something isn't wrong.

    Hi LoneStar,

Thankfully, it was a painless experience. My service adviser had the shop foreman drive it with me. When he launched it, he said, yep, absolutely it's broke. He said he was a former S3 owner himself and knew immediately since they should never smoke the fronts. He referenced the TSBs and said it was the first their dealer had seen. The parts are on order now just waiting to hear from them to take it back in.

I'll check what revision is on my '16 before I take it in and report back to the thread.

    Hey all,

I was reading through this thread and for the most part no one has mentioned when they found this issue as to what letter was on their part.

I just looked under mine this morning and notice “G”, if anyone has had this letter and experienced an issue please let me know.

I had just bought my first Audi last year so I don’t know much about them.

Thats excellent news. I had trouble at first even when the shop foreman road with me. I performed a launch and it completely smoked the front tires. He proceeded to try and tell me how a Haldex works and that when there's slip it takes a moment to send power to the rear wheels. I looked him dead in the eye and said "Your either mistaken how it works or you just don't know what the hell your talking about so take you pick but this is not how it works". I'm usually a very nice person but I lost my chit on him. This was after there was a stored code as well. Long story short, as a previously stated they replaced the entire unit so it all worked out. I believe the TSB is for the pump only which I have heard has fixed peoples problems too. Glad its working out for you.

So it appears that 'G' could be just as simple as rolling the dice and hope that it doesn't fail. I will be testing it here shortly since I am still under warranty.

Took my dealership the better part of 2 months (quoted a parts sourcing issue), but they got it fixed and Quattro is alive once again.

Hopefully the updated unit holds, but I won't know about it as my lease is up in October (~3500-4000 more miles) and I will be moving to something a bit bigger.

They need to get this sorted - I bet there is a fair percentage of cars that have this problem and don't even know it. Until then, I would be wary about picking these up on the secondary market if they are going to be flirting with warranty expiration and it's not CPO.

Read this thread today and scared me because last Friday i went to launch my car and it felt like a weird launch very slow and not normal. So i launched it today and it was fine i think i was in M but i might have forgotten to put it on S before i launched it Friday. Good thread though at least if my haldex does fail theres tons of info i can use from this thread!

this isnt RS3, but my 2012 ttrs, maybe 10 launches in total, but lots of 190mph+ driving, it started making clunking noises a few days before this happened... basically some retaining pin let go and it turned into a blend-tec haha all the gears fell out onto the road

a few months before this happened there was a dealer flash going around they didnt say what but everyone online was saying it was to make the car more fwd biased, i skipped this update still don't regret it though

Wow! That’s nasty lol. Never seen anything like this before on a VAG car, especially the newer ones. Is it tuned?

Was your failure just the pump or the entire unit? I have the same 307 mechanical failure code from my obd11 reader (and I'm at 52,000 miles so no warranty)

They just replaced the control unit. I wanted them to get everything new as my warranty is expiring soon. Also, because they don’t seem knowledgeable about this so it somehow worries me.

So my ‘16 S3 doesn’t have a letter after the code on the Haldex unit. Haven’t experienced any issue like I’ve seen on here but have a lot of knowledge now if I do experience the issue and have to hit the dealer. Thanks guys!

Your only 2k out of warranty. Call AOA anf explain to them and they might cover it. That's given that you dont have any power mods.

Hi guys,so looks like my S3 16 suffers from a failure too.
Just wanted to ask because I didn't see this reported.
    S3 8V sedan 2016 stage 2.
    Did 43,000km (about 27k miles)
Yesterday I did a few launches,on the last one it launched ok for a few meters and then I heard a strange noise from the back with some gentle rattling while accelerating in 1/2 gear under a medium and full load.
I'm not getting a lot of wheel spin, you can feel it trying to hold on and rattles.
Saw that most of people here that suffer from this failure didn't report about noises and rattle.

Seems like I have G and don’t have haldex issues yet.

Has to be hit or miss with G but worries me since i want to go stage two soon. Currently still stock with downpipe and intake

I had this same code and here is what the dealer did. My SA and I did the same test prior to the fix and this time the wheels didn’t spin like a FWD Corolla.

It may be in my head but for some reason the car doesn't feel as quick off the line, but then again this is my daily as to my other car is a 2018 S5 Sportback.

Dealership just contacted me, they did in fact find a gff fault for AWD mechanical malfunction. They are in talks with Audi now to get correct parts in!! Will update again when I get my final invoice receipt

    Cool

Took mine to the dealer yesterday for the C111307 code. They couldn't reproduce, but since there's a TSB for this condition, they're replacing the Haldex pump. Car should be ready today, so they must have had the pump in stock.

They gave me an '18 A3 Quattro as a loaner in the meantime .
