Ah, the C5 section. A land scarce of new content and active social community on the main forum, but a wealth of partouts of all things C5. Literally, that's mostly all I've seen in the classifieds as of last week.

Anyways, I've migrated over here from the B5 S4 section after the car decided to throw the belt on me. A link to my original thread: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?p=11024527

It was an 01.5 6spd with "Enhanced" sport package in awful shape that I had to save, for still unknown reasons. I felt so had to; as corny as it sounds.

The culprit to my unwitting end

The day she left with the new owner

I searched for about a week looking at a few other cars as I needed a daily. I quickly narrowed my searches to something V8+stick+AWD+wagon, or bare minimum V8+AWD. This brought me to the C5 A6/S6 4.2 and B6/7 S4.

The first one I saw was an 04 Nemo Blue S4 Avant 6spd.

Pretty much a generational upgrade to what I already had, except everything I wanted. Needed body work, and the motor sounded off for being rebuilt a short time ago. Interior was perfect, but I made that mistake the first time around lol.

I looked at a few other C5 A6 4.2s and while going out to see one, an 03 6spd Allroad looking to be in good condition popped up for sale. Immediately called the owner and set a time to go see it after I looked at another Blue 4.2 A6.

Here's what I saw in the ad:

I got there and it was just short of the expectations I had for it, but after some inspection it showed no signs of rust in any of the usual places from Audi's of that era. It was clean, save for a few spaces (which will be getting ironed out) and the interior was in good condition. Somebody tried to hide all the worn switches, and it shows.

And the radio is half dead

Gave it a little wash today and cleaned off some of the rust proofing that looks to have stuck to the lower door moulding and along the edges of the doors. I will be continuing with that.

Headlights are getting sanded down tomorrow and cleared to perfection

402 mod, and wheels are coming up this weekend as well. Stay tuned!

You should probably replace the timing belt if it's not done yet. 🤣

It's a shame what happened to the S4, but I look forward to seeing what you do with the AR.

Good choice sticking with the 2.7t! I'm sure you're love/loathe relationship with Audi will only grow from here. GL.

Thanks! Not as dynamic as the B5 S4 section, but maybe calm would be a good change 👍

I saw it today actually. I had forgotten some things that were hidden away and allowed to pick them up. One day, that will be mine again. Thanks for the kind words though!

Plan so far is to keep it somewhat stock in terms of the engine and what not. Low slow and a little louder should do.

I took some things intended for the S4 and threw them onto the Allroad. It also got an interior clean, thanks to a wonderful woman of mine.

While changing wheels, I noticed that the Allroad will need control arms and bushings in the rear. They shouldn't be too hard to do though.

Awful picture of one of the front upper arms.

    Front lower

Now it's perched on the new wheels, but they look quite small with the wider arch on the C5. Probably thinking of going 19s or 20s nect year.

Then the headlights got a nice go around and refresh. Before:

    After:

Didn't get a chance to seal them, but I'll do that next week after cleaning them up again. 402 mod is next on the list to settle on the final look, as well as an alignment to make sure everything is kosher

What about putting spacers on the wheels? Probably would help immensely with the look

I have smaller 3 or 5mm spacer up front, and wider 8mm on the back. My issue is the studs won't take a much thicker spacer. I think I max out around 12 or 13mm on these, but I'm not entirely sure.

Nice find, especially with the 6mt!!!

Just FYI, the rings on the rear hatch are misplaced.

I can't tell by your pics what size tire you have, but also keep in mind (if you haven't already) that the allroad has a larger rolling diameter thus the tire requires a larger sidewall than our other C5 counterparts. The larger sidewall will help fill that gap.

I figure the car must have had a myriad of rust warranty done to it within 12 yrs. That would explain the weird placement if the rings.

As for the wheels, they're an 18x8 ET32 and the tires are 225/40r18. Stock wheels were 225/50r17, so a bit smaller wheel overall. I'm thinking a 19 inch wheel would be good, or a 20 inch, but I'll do more research on it before making a decision next summer.

Yeah, that would definitely explain the exaggerated wheel gap.
Iirc, the stock wheels should be 17x7.5 et 25, and the stock tire should have been 225/55/17.

If you're running 18x8 et32, then you're already starting with a wheel that's slightly less aggressive offset-wise than the stock wheel.
In addition, 225/40/18, equates to a smaller rolling diameter:
    Stock = approx 26.74"
    your setup = approx 25.09"
Meaning you're rolling diameter is 1.65" smaller and adding approximately 21mm of wheel gap compared to stock.

...yeah...so let me stop my rambling. LOL
Anyway, congrats on the ride and welcome to the C5 forum. As you've noticed the pace is much slower than the B5S4 forum. hahaha

No worries, and thanks for the info. At least I won't be speeding as much anymore since I'll be going slower than the Speedo lol

Can you point me in the direction of adding dual factory air tanks, a second compressor, or upgrading the distribution block and air lines to make the system more responsive?

    Hahaha...true about the speedo.
As far as the compressor stuff, sounds like you've got some ideas rolling around in your head. But to be honest, I got rid of my air suspension (I know...sacrilege!!!) years ago and have added the arnott static suspension, so you're asking the wrong allroad guy.

That looks pretty good with 19s.

Yesterday the car went in to get the timing belt done and whatever else it needed. I also got a box of goodies from SteelyS6.

    Front end coming apart

Front end off and the original timing confirmed. The belt looked pretty good, bit I wanted to go ahead and replace it anyways.

When we pulled the air box out, we found someone had done the Swiss cheese mod

Pulling coil packs proved much easier than the S4. It also showed that it had been leaking for a bit in every cylinder. The middle cylinders were the worst

Pulled the throttle body to get easier access to one of the power steering bolts. Intake and TB didn't look bad for carbon build up. Gave them a good cleaning.

I moved to the back while the others struggled to get the pass. combi valve out and away so we could pull the valve cover.

I started by installing the rear hatch wiper for the safety.

About 10 mins later, this is what I had done. Making it a proper car

Next up was removing the licence plate tub. Only 6/8 nuts were in place, and whoever was in there last certainly made sure to destroy the plastic trim underneath the carpet on the harch. It was pretty much mangled and broken in all places

The old tub here. You can see there's some peeling and chips that were on here. This also has LED plate lights, so I swapped them to the new one

The new one provided by SteelyS6. Does need a polish, but nothing unmanageable.

After the rub was in, I got to work on the taillight. Much better condition than the old one, which was cracked and scratched

It was a while before they got the combi valve out. We pulled the valve cover and saw how neglected the car has been. Such a dirty motor.

Cleaning the valve covers took twice as long as the S4 did, and they still didn't look good. Caked on crud and sludge

What was left I couldn't get off.

And cleaning the other covers that were dirty and covered in oil. Amazingly, this car has every single piece of trim for a complete set.

Nearing the end of the night before we put the bumper on, I swapped out one dead fog light bulb; burned out in the center

A list of items replaced in the bay:
    -Timing belt/water pump/thermostat (Hepu kit)
    -Associated tensioners and rollers
    -Serpentine belt and tensioner
-CCT gaskets and half moons (these looked crispy)
-OEM coolant reservoir (cracked old one)
    -CTS clip and seals
    -Both cam caps

The car seems to run so much better than it did before. Coolant temp used to stay below 90°c, and with the heat on would drop to 80-70°c.

Oil temp would also have a hard time getting to 100°c. I attribute this to the t-stat sticking open and causing much of the sludging of the oil in the motor. I'll be changing the oil every 5k km, and running a multitude of flushes into it to get the sludge out. Recommendations on what to use?

The car has also been boosting better. It could be tuned, but I did record boost (Torque app) hitting 13 psi and 22 psi. Most commonly around 9 psi, but I still think it's stock.

No 402 mod anymore, as the suspension is gonna be a giant headache to get aligned.

Pretty much all the eccentrics are going to be frozen, and it looks like I'll require new lower control arms. Couple that in with the failing arms in front, and it's a mess. I don't feel comfortable destroying $1k tires either. Looks like another great subframe swap to me

Nice work, always happy to see parts going towards saving another C5. Holy sludge in the top end, car will be happy it found you!

I wonder of the control arms would swap over from the S6. I believe brakes are different but I could provide all those parts as well. I should have the entire subframe out in the next two weeks.

Thanks for the parts! They were incredibly well packaged. A1 delivery haha.

As I understand from some research I've done, the lower control arms are the same on all C5 Quattro models. We might run into some problems with the subframe, as I read the Allroad has spacers for the subframe. We'll see though.

Good time to replace the spider hose, mine was pretty gummed up when we did the timing belt and top end reseal.

I also have the lower hatch piece with sunshade. Its in pretty good shape, two plastic pieces that sunshade screws to were cracked but they have been two part epoxied.

My research showed a slight change in the balljoint (slightly narrower tapered shaft) on the straight lower control arm. I wanna say the change was made mid 2004 I believe.
I found this out after I was shipped the wrong ones for my 05. Hopefully save you some frustration : )

It works well enough for now. Not totally concerned about it.

It's for the rear lower control arms in the rear end. It's nice to know the suspension differences though.

Thankfully it was just the bulb, but thanks R4! When you coming back to land of the 2.7T? Lol

Forgot to add this little gem in there. Will also need to do those at some point as well. What a messy job it is though.

The girlfriend sent me photos of the piston rebuild kit. Should be fun putting that in at some point. Did you guys also know Bagpipinandy is also gonna offer cylinder rebuild kits?

Dropped some coin on Cali Allroad rear suspension and control arms. Then I gotta pick up eccentrics and bushings to bring the rear end back up to snuff.

Can't wait for Canadian winter to put spots of rust on it lol

Alright, I didn't get a chance to, but here it is now:

Setup is a 2.5" catback to a dual in/out Flowmaster Super 10, branching off to 14" long, 4" wide 2.5" resonators to 3" dual walled tips. Cats make this so damn tame lol.

The old garbage which are MASSIVE

Some hot revs (video is lacking so another will come about)

Here are the details for you starting at the turbo:

    -Stock downpipes
-Pre cats and main cats still installed
-2.5" piping from the main cats
-Where the stock resonator would be is the Flowmaster Super 10 PN: 8425154
-Branches out on each side to custom resonators - these are made locally by a shop. They have sizes ranging from 14"-24" long resonators that are 4" wide.
-3" dual walled 15° slant cut tips. Unfortunately, I have no idea what brand they are, but they are incredibly short compared to everything else they had. They're probably 4"ish long but I'll double check for you.

Cold start with a little better quality but it doesn't help that it was in an underground lol

I wanna hear some real world –*revs, driving - any drone etc.
any idea on cost of custom resonators and tips at tail?

Considering doing similar with gutted pre-cats. That Flowmaster muffler is not expensive, but concerned about pricing of those custom resonators and tips.
    thanks!

It certainly is more noticeable, about on par with my old B5 S4 setup but not as loud out of the car. I'm pretty sure it's more due to the fact that the mufflers and resonators have now swapped places and I don't have the factory X-pipe anymore.

I'll call the shop and ask how much they'd want for them as a similar setup. It's Canadian dollars as well, so fairly inexpensive for the US folk.

Took a 30 min trip to a u-pull junk yard. Found me a 4.2 A6 with all its brakes still on. However, because it was sitting on the ground, I couldn't get enough leverage to release the stuck caliper bolts on the rear. So I abandoned that project.

I stood up and looked down the row of cars to see an Allroad getting raided. In the excitement I ran over to see what was salvageable. The interior was trashed and I couldn't use anything.

The engine bay was half stripped as well. Head lights and all were gone. Some EGT sensors were still there in the stock downpipes, and an intake manifold on the long block.

Some Russian guys were already looting from this car for a while, so I can only assume they got most of it. I did end up getting a second air tank to add into the system later on.

Another A6 had an absolutely mint interior, but it was a 2000 with a Symphony I radio. The climate control was immaculate, so I got to work removing it. While popping up the shift trim, it shot up and chipped the immaculate faceplate on the climate control. I did the next best thing and pulled it apart to swap out the buttons with mine later on.
