Another glove box hinge repair DIY

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been putting this away for a while, so I decided to go for a fix.
I did the metal bracket hinge repair that lasted for so long.
This is what the hinge looks like after taking the bracket out.

Here's what I used to fix it. Some soldering skills black plastic to melt.( I had a piece of installers face plate laying a round)

Melt the plastic down to the area needed as much as you can. It's not the best, but I worked with what I have.

Here is to show how well it holds up. I have it in mid air shaking it to see how it holds up.

I did sand it down to make it look neath at the end, but I didn't take pictures. You get the idea.

    Enjoy.

Thanks for this! I have mine out with the bracket installed but haven't put it in. I may switch to this, and pick up some soldering skills!

I tried 3 times to repair mine, but it continued to break because the damn piston requires too much pressure to open. But on a light note I broke it so much more that my glove box opens and closes perfectly fine now for some odd ass reason :)

Thank you sir. Unless i'm sitting in the passenger's side, I can get it closed. Reaching from the driver's side was a mission.

That's pretty funny lol. That's like when I had my 350z. It doesn't have a glove box but it has little compartments behind the seats. I always would tell the officer "I'm going to reach behind my seat to get my information."

That's because it broke like mine, the plastic at the bottom twists instead of moving the piston

The pistons are supposed to be regularly disassembled and lubed once a year as per a tsb

You can also drill a hole in the back of it and it allows air in it so it still dampens but works how it actually should lol.

Also sometimes the o-ring gets jammed because of the lack of lubrication

I mean what was Audi thinking? Who's taking their glove boxout once a year to lubricate a stupid piston? I've never had a glove box problem in any other car, or should i say plastic problem as I have with this car. Everything that's made of plastic on my car has broken or is about to.

Man i'm getting so pissed just typing about it.

Why would any Audi owner work on their own car?? They'd always take it to the dealer

Also I think it was in a tsb because it became such a big problem

I'm curious how this plastic weld held up if you are still following this thread. I tore the bumper off my A4 in a parking lot the other day and was able to repair with an inexpensive plastic weld kit. I could totally do this if it holds up.

I drilled holes in the piston assembly to free up the operation of it. Much easier to open and close now. Hopefully I don’t break the hinge. I’m at about 3 years now on a new glovebox door with no issues.
