    EBC Redstuff ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
After a recent thread where a few owner said they would be removing their Akebono ceramc pad because of the bad performance, I'm Thinking about the EBC redstuff.. instead of the oem pad. I have no problem with the oem stuff, except fo rthe high dust ( never had brake fade, i manage the initial bite no problem, barely ever experienced brake squeal). would the redstuff be a great upgrade in that regard or they will feel just like the akebono ?

Please give us your experience with this pad :)

Love this pad. Low dust (sometimes non-existent), great grab and it only takes a pedal push or two to get them heated up.

We put Redstuff on my buddies car and he likes it.

They are a bit noisy and dusty until they break in. After that they are nice. they still have a good bite and no longer have to clean the wheels daily.

I have Yellowstuff for my fronts and Redstuff for my rears sitting in my garage at home. (I wanted to try the two compounds so figured I'd be strange and miss match lol)

I just put these on all 4 with slotted/drilled rotors, and new ss lines. I was disappointed at first going from stock, pedal feel was squishy but after break-in which is long (800-1k miles EBC says) , they are great with much less brake dust than stock. Pedal feel is also very predictable, its not grabby and inconsistent when you apply the peddle, its very predictable. Took a bit to get use to, I even thought I had air in my lines, but after the break-in it feels good, and seems better than stock stopping.

I've been running EBC Reds for a couple years now, second set actually. Very good pad, but they do take about a 1000 miles before it fully seats. Until then expect a little more dust, (but less than OEM) and slightly higher peddle pressure. Once seated, it is a great pad, long life, low dust, high heat tolerance, easy on the rotors and good modulation. I can see why Audi would not choose a pad like this for OEM, it takes to long to seat. For us aftermarket types, we understand the issues and its not a problem.

For you guys saying they take 1k mile to fully seat...are you doing a bedding in when you paired them with new rotors? Just curious if that would speed up the process such as when you put on a new BBK

Yes; I follow the EBC bedding in procedure and it takes about 1000 miles to fully seat, for me not a big deal, but something to be aware of before you buy them. I'm sure some have put them on, drive about a week and conclude they are no good, which is actually not the case, it just takes some time and miles. You will slowly feel the gripping power increase as they seat. Then you do the bedding in procedure to cook them.

Also, just some info on brake pads in general, not just EBC...when the pads are new they are soft, and you are seating them, which is wearing the pad to match the rotor. Once seated, you do the 6 or so hard stops 60 to 5 MPH to deliberately heat them up good, this cures the resins in the pad, causing the pad to harden, and this provides long life and low dust to the pad. You might have to do this more than once on different days. With the EBC Reds, the dust stops once the pads are cured, which is how you will know they have been bedded in sufficiently. Once you understand all this the "procedure" makes more since.

Thanks for the info....having not used them before I didn't know their process....your right that its something to consider when buying them and like you I don't think it would be big deal.

Great insights on EBC Redstuff here. I may switch from Akebono on my next set. On a side note, are EBC rotors any good? I may swap out stocks for their USR rotors at the same time.

I have them sitting in my garage, I will install them eventually.

Autozone was the best spot I found for them with their 20% off code it is ~$300 shipped for Front and Rear.

Thanks! I found the Stage 4 Signature Kit (USR rotors & Redstuff pads) for the fronts for under $210 shipped from IRP. They have great prices on just the rotors too.

Good pad. Break in there will be dust (typical of ceramic pads). They need some heat in them to improve initial bite. Very low to no brake dust. I'm only running them on the front - when rear needs new pads I'll be going with these.

So thing is, I got myselft the Q5 caliper and its comes with brand new OEM brembo pad, still thinking if I try to sell them back and buy a set of redstuff instead lol. They sound like a better option than akebono thats for sure!

I believe the oem brembo pad had a revision at one point and they were apparently much better than the previous one so I will try to see if it's true or not.

Hey guys, I got the EBC red stuff and a new set of adams dimpled and slotted rotors for my A7 after the previous set was bad with the akebonons, squeal and poor braking. The new EBC are squeaing and feel a bit rough when slowing down and i only drove off from the dealership and did few miles and turned back and dropped it off and told my service guy its not good. I am wondering if its still needs to break in carefully and then bedded in? Still it shouldnt make any noise from beginning if it was installed properly etc. I never had this issue with the prior set.I told them to drive it more tomorrow to nicely break in the pads and give me their impression to make sure the job was done properly before i pick it up and paying for the labor. I find EBC break in procedure wierd as most of the prior pads you bedded them in the beginning before driving normally....

The break in period is quite long. It took a few hundred miles for mine to properly "bed" in. Now they feel great. I think ECS said it could take up to 1,000 miles to break in. I don't have any noise at all. Maybe not enough lubricating grease was used on the back of the pads?

Thanks for letting me know guys, there should definitely be no noise even when new so the dealer is going to look at it and test it tomorrow properly. I will ask them to check if mechanic whom is very good if he did put the antisqueal paste on back of shims.

    Did he bed them in?

Go do some 50-5 mph stops with moderately hard braking. (No ABS)

They used to be my track only pad, then I got lazy and didn't switch them out after a track day... Never looked back. Low dust, great road feel.
