B8.5 APR HFC/DP - Northern Virginia Emissions Inspection?

Did some searching and couldn't come up with anything; pretty sure this is an easy answer and hoping the Mid-Atlantic can chime in, specifically Northern Virginia folks.

Considering adding an APR HFC/DP to my allroad (B8.5) and wanted to know if this would have any impact with passing Virginia emissions? No APR tune as of right now, but that may change in the future, if so, does having a tune + APR HFC/DP have any impact on passing emissions?

    Thanks in advance!

I'll offer what I can -- I ran a Test Pipe on my B6 A4 and never got in trouble (was tuned for it). The APR file I had ensured I wouldn't throw an O2 sensor code. With a HFC installed, you will likely still be fine and the tune should make sure of that. The OBDII scan that run emissions tests won't know the difference. As a part of the inspection checklist, there is a step to check for any emissions alterations, but I was never flagged. I don't even think the gas station I went to lifted the hood.

The only caveat I'll provide is that there have been RapidPass stations on offramps in this area and I think that does more of a "sniffer" style check on your emissions (see here for thread). If you fail this on-the-spot check, I think you'll need to go somewhere to get tested and pass in order to renew your tags. You're not running a Test Pipe, so I would guess you'll be safe. I sold the car before these tests came up, so I cannot confirm if my car would have failed. They are not super common; just a heads up that this style of spot-checking would be your only risk. I had seen these stations posted up on my King St exits from 395 once or twice.

    hope this helps!

have you figured anything out on this? sorry for lack of replies...i cant really speak to VA emissions as i live in MD, but i am curious what you experience. As Neubs stated, and i experienced this, in MD, the MVA designated place i went had sniffers, but they also check codes. I got inspected right before my HFC install, but im due next year (i think).

I do know that APR tune deletes the emissions code, i went with Eurocode HFC and i have an 02 spacer.

Good luck on your tuning options!

Nothing yet...hoping someone from N. VA can chime in. I know there has to be a lot of folks running the HFC/DP, so really just need an answer if they can pass emissions or not.

Fingers crossed someone will chime in.

Its been about a little over two years since I've had my V8 Avant in for emissions with a catless DP to FI exhaust but from what I **DO** remember, they specifically looked for readiness from my ECU which had a JHM 93 tune on it. I'm pretty sure my advisor knew I was running catless but he never mentioned it to me and from experience, most places do not necessarily check under the car. However there are times when they DO check so you have to be wary of where you go.

There is no SMOG tester in VA to my recollection...

    Hope this helps.

If you have a high flow cat, no codes, and the readiness codes are set then you should be good to go. The inspectors can see if there is a cat or not with the inline engines pretty easily. The bigger V engines don't have a lot of room around the engine so it is harder for an inspector to fail on a visual inspection.
