    S4 vs C450 AMG

Anyone compare the two cars yet?

Went for a road trip to visit friends this weekend, and my friend grabbed a new C300 and I liked it. Later in the weekend, on the way home I battled through terrible highway drivers with a C63 AMG S, and man with the package it just looked great - plenty of power to boot. Regardless, it gave me a lot of thought during the long drive stint.

For the most part - with the exception of the B9 S4 having Quattro /w Sports Diff, virtual cockpit, they are very similar cars...I personally prefer the C-Class exterior styling and interior wasnt terrible in the C300, many similarities. I haven't sat in the AMG seats that are optional but they look great.

I drove the C43 AMG. The S4's interior is higher quality and the back seat has more room. You would be hard pressed to get two 6' tall guys sitting in line with each other with the C43. The S4 has enough room for two 6'-2" to 6-3" guys.

I had rented a C300 for a week a couple of weeks back and I kinda liked the interiors of the C300 (and I like the exteriors too; I think it is a pretty car), it wasn't as fun to drive as my A4. And definitely felt slower too. Overall, I wouldn't trade my A4 in for a C300.

I haven't driven the C450AMG, but I find the C Class styling very "feminine" inside and out. The A4, to me, is more masculine and Teutonic.

?? Are you talking about the C63 S? With 504hp, and base price of $75K? Might as well compare these cars against Ferrari and Lambo if price is tossed out the window.

Yup. I agree. The C class is sexy whereas the A4 is handsome. Both are great looking cars though. BMW definitely has to up their game.

The c450amg has around 360hp or so and does the 0-60 in 4.5s. It compares directly to the S4 and 340i. The rs4 would be comparable to the c63 and m3 I guess.

    *sorry I meant C43 AMG not C450 AMG (2016), 2017+ C43 AMG

any other feedback is welcome...I'm trying to come up with a list of 'other' options for the S4. Until the black optics is available for the B9, I'm not budging, but ya...
    RS3
    C43 AMG
    340i xDrive /w 6MT
    S4

The C63 / S, M3, eventual RS4, Quadrifoglio are all GREAT cars...my problem is I am getting old I think, and especially here doing 50 km/h (30 mph) over the speed limit and getting caught is bad (lost license, impounded + crushed car, $10k fine). I don't have time for the race track so simply having modest power (S4 + ECU tune and a few bolt ons) and a very nice comfortable interior is all I want. The 450-500 hp beasts will always have me wanting to modify them as I have for the past 20 years literally, even with bolt ons, and becomes excessive.

Speeding never appealed to me so I've never tracked my cars or anything like that but I enjoy cars like the S4 or the new RS5 because I appreciate the technology involved in them.

@RudyH Black optics option is available right now (for sold orders only.). It's been available since early April. Put your order in!

Since AZ won't let me post pdf. attachments (what's up with that) here's a link to the thread on AW that shows the official B9 S4 order form, codes and pricing.

My buddy has the c400. Interior is great, the burmeister audio crushes BO (at least in the b8...excited to fiddle with the new BO)

Definitely a nice car, but MB is blah to me unless it's a true AMG.

I am switching away from Mercedes mainly due to quality. The Audi has a way higher quality interior and the seats are way more comfortable. Mercedes makes their interiors look nice but if you pay attention to the fine detail you will notice they use cheaper materials. Also the interior of the Mercedes makes squeaks and rattles I never expected from a German brand !! I was a huge Mercedes fan all my life, but the quality of their cars has turned me away.

I think the term is enthusiast? Which is what brings most of us here, some like to come out and be a-holes just because they can I suppose. My flag is firmly planted out in the open, no coming out of the woods for me.

He's right though. Comparisons only make sense within the same price class. Would you hold it against an S3 that it doesn't push as much power as an S6?

Yes, the c450/c43 (same car essentially. Only difference is 7spd vs 9spd trannys) is Mercedes first time offering a car in the S4 & 340i segment.

As you can see, I own a c450. Here is my story of how I chose it over the B9 S4 that I was originally eyeing.

I was an Audi die hard. For the last 15 years, I always considered them the silent superior of the German "Big 3". Then last year since I had to wait for the new B9 S4, I figured that I'd give everything else in this segment, and a few that are close to it, some thorough and honest consideration. It of course came down to the big 3 in the end. I love so much about the 340i/440i (might have gone with a RWD 440i Gran Coupe if I lived in a warm climate as you can't deny BMW's handle the best of the 3) but the craptastic AWD system they've been using for over a decade now with little, if any, improvements they've made kept it from being the winner. They drive so well, look great, and the DCT is so so smooth that I could overlook their dated and re-re-re-re-used interior but with my trips to the mountains, I require top tier AWD capabilities. To which is what always kept me in the Quattro world. Quattro has always been king but lately, 4Matic has come a long ways in the past. So I gave the Benz an honest shot. I drove it and absolutely LOVED it. I didn't have one bad thing to say about it after my first experience with one. I was truly surprised and pleasantly so.

The B9 wasn't out yet so that made this choice a bit difficult as you can imagine. But there were plenty of reviews of the new S4 available and even though no one disliked the new S4, when comparing all the reviews (some by the same company/person), the c450/c43 was a clear cut choice. Essentially everyone loved the new "baby AMG". Most weren't too thrilled with the B9. It was good, but not great. And in my eye, I didn't like how it essentially looked identical to the A4 other than badges and wheels. The same could be said about the 450/43 compared to the c300(when you option the exterior with all the upgrades) but I feel that both cars optioned out as aggressive or as 'sporty' as possible, the Benz looks a bit more special. But hey, to each their own there.

Within a week of ownership I had my Blizzaks on it and was blasting through the snow with a huge grin on my face. I only feel as if this 4Matic is better than the B5/B6 Quattro cars I had been accustomed to, but I know that I made the right car choice.

    I love Audi's, but now I love Mercedes-Benz's

Only good pic I have of her so far:

    Current:
    '16 Mercedes-Benz C450 "AMG": Stage 2 w/downpipes & 19" BBS CH-R's
    '88 Harley-Davidson Sporty 880: 1200 bottom - Ported & Cam'd top - S&S In - Screamin' Eagle Out

    Previous:
    '02 Audi A4 1.8TQM: Full GT28RS on meth w/everything else.
    '01.5 Audi A4 1.8TQMS: Tune and exhaust.
'99 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon Manual: Bone stock.
I don't even want to remember the others

    Sean1,

I have seen a few reviews, maybe 2 pick the C43 over the Audi S4, but 90% of reviews state get the Audi.

Where do you see all these reviews of the C43 being picked over the S4?

I have not driven the b9 - it should be a much better can than the b8.

I still think the MB will win in terms of driving dynamics in this comparison.

If looks (if you subjectively prefer the audi styling) or tech or build quality matter more than driving dynamics - go for the Audi.

Audi puts the engine too far forward, doesn't create enough rear bias and relies on differentials to make up the difference and it's never enough. You end up with push understeer. The C43 drives like a rear wheel drive car but puts the power down.

    Okan509,

I agree with what you said.

This will be a daily driver and a road trip car for me. The smoother ride and comfort are more important to me. Also, in theory, the C43 is a better track car, but I will never drive the car on a track or hard enough to notice the difference.

The rest is just taste. I do like the C43 and looked at it really hard. One of issues for me is the S4 has more back seat space. I also like the interior of the S4 better and the subdued exterior fits better for me since this will be my business car also.

If someone like the C43 or the 340i better I have no problem with that. All are really good cars.

    Geoff

I've not driven the C AMGs so I cannot comment on how they drive. But yes. They look special. And to each, his own. As long as you are happy with the car, what others say will not matter. A great looking car nonetheless. I personally would love to see more photos of the baby AMG.

I know, right? It's tuned by AMG. Has AMG brakes. Has AMG's suspension. But more than 1 person built the engine. Car is essentially worthless

LOL. Says the guy driving an A4.

Buying a new A4/c300/328i is funny to me. It's like you're trying to act 'well-off' because you've accessed a luxury German car brand but you could only afford the cheapest model. I would honestly be embarrassed to drive around in one of those

I wasn't talking about reviews that compare the two directly. I was talking about reviews that just review each car on their own. And at the time, all the reviews that were out for the 450 had the reviewers grinning and shouting about how much they loved it. In regards to the B9 reviews, the consensus was that it was a great car, but not a fantastic car that left them with the same impressions.

But as I said, their both great cars and you really can't go wrong with either. I certainly wouldn't hate to be driving the new B9 everyday.

Audi puts the engine too far forward, doesn't create enough rear bias and relies on differentials to make up the difference and it's never enough. You end up with push understeer. The C43 drives like a rear wheel drive car but puts the power down.
    Agree 100%

This car with it's 66% rear bias and engine on top of the front axle rather than 100% in front of the axle gives it so much more of a sporty and confidence inspiring feel too it. Not a detail that absolutely ruins the Audi, but when it comes to pushing them on a twisty canyon road, the Benz is quite a bit more enjoyable.

You just nailed it right on the head, my friend

A question was asked and I offered up my opinion on the matter. It's funny how so many people seem to take it personally like they own VAG and personally designed the B9. Chill out people. Go drive the cars and pick the one you like for whatever reason you wish. It's your choice and you don't have to defend it to anyone.

Guys come on. Let's all stop this bickering and fighting. Everyone has their own choice. On an Audi forum, S4 vs C450AMG vs 340i vs XE-S vs S60 Polestar (vs whatever) would most probably end up with S4 being the best and the others being crap. Like-wise on Bimmer and Merc (and other) forums. sean1.8t had the balls to come in here and support the C450AMG. I'm not sure I would go to a Bimmer forum and support my A4 vs the 330i. I'll probably get roasted alive and I don't have the hoohas for that.
But yes. I personally think every car is nice. They all have their positives and negatives. No car is perfect. Let us all stop bashing each other. Irrespective of who started it or whatever, let us all be (or atleast act) civilised :)

And please don't roast me. I mean no harm. It's just the old fart in me talking out loud.

Well I bought both of those A4's used (<$15,000) when I was in college and essentially broke. I was saying that I wouldn't purchase a NEW $50,000 entry level car.

"Fake AMG badges." LOL you're envy is strong, my friend

And "compensating"? Wow, really? So you're just going to talk shit about everyone on this forum (and all forums for that matter)? No one can be an enthusiast and enjoy a more than 4 cylinder powered car otherwise they're "compensating"? Again, WOW

No worries though, I debadged the car

I know right!? F**k me for coming in here and answering the OP's question from a perspective that directly pertains to the topic at hand.

I expect this type of treatment (from Audiman33) in the B5/6 section as it's nothing but teenagers in there now, but in the new B9 section? Wow. This used to be a gentlemen's forum...

Once again I'm perfectly happy with my 4 cylinder A4...

Trust me, I by no means am envious of your C450
and yeah you're compensating you had to get the 450 right just bc it has those "AMG" badges on it right? Then you debadge it so it looks like every other jappy girls Benz. Not every one is that drives a more powerful car is compensating. I have two V8's. but they are SUV's so... But the people who feel the need to try and shit talk others are compensating for one thing or another.

But its all good at the end of the day different things float different boats.

Well if you're not envious, you certainly seem to have a peculiar infatuation with it...

You're some piece of work, my friend. I'm not even going to touch your "Jappy girl" comment, but I couldn't care less about badging or what not. I just wanted an AWD car with more than a 4 banger under the hood. I settled for a TT V6 even though it has fake AMG badges

Do you honestly not understand the contradictions in your posts?

Calling my car girly when you drive Audi's equivalent of the c300, which is truly the Misses' car....

Saying that people who "need to try and shit talk others are compensating for one thing or another," Yet YOU, UNPROVOKED, STARTED SHIT TALKING ABOUT MY CAR....

So, you're essentially just putting yourself down with every post lol. Are you required to wear a helmet anytime you leave the house? Or I guess they probably don't let you leave the group home?

100% in front of the axle is quite a bit of hyperbole, even for previous designs. The current B9 design has some portion of the engine on top of the axle and some in front. Same as the C43. Pics speak for themselves:

that's not a picture of c43 chassis or an s4. You choose to picture a c63 (V8, which is front heavy) to a 4 cylinder. You flavored the post with extreme bias.

locate strut towers and do you own assessment

I would say the c43 is sitting nearly right on top of front axle (maybe 60%) while 90% of the engine sits in front of the axle in the s4.
