Question Thoroughly Confused - No start/electrical issue? Magically Fixed?

TL;DR - Drove car 300 miles. Started twice next morning but third time would not start, just kept cranking. No fuel pump prime, front fans on FULL, and intermittent ECU communication with VCDS. Car sat a month, got trailered home, recharged battery, and started after a few tries and has started and run just fine ever since. Nothing seems wrong but confidence is shot that I won't get stranded 100s miles from home because I did not do ANYTHING other than charge battery and pull/clear codes a few times.

Ok, this will be a little long but please bear with me. Problem first started as outlined in this thread. For the last month the car had been sitting in my sister's heated garage. Last weekend, I went with a friend and picked up the car and trailered it home. Couple things to note at time of pickup: Battery was dead, as in it wouldn't unlock or roll windows or anything. When I got it home, I hooked up my battery charger and it wouldn't even charge (I think because the voltage was so low). I jumper cabled it with my other S4 and let it charge that way about 10min, after which my regular battery charger picked it up and began charging. I let it sit that way for 6-8 hours, I think it got to 85% or so. It was outside so I disconnected the charger for the night. The next day I hooked it back up for a few more hours. Then this is what I did.

    1. I pulled all codes with VCDS autoscan. Results from that first pull are below. There is a LOT here I think associated with the totally dead battery. One improtant thing maybe to highlight is VCDS had no issues picking up the engine Address 01 and read it just fine.

    3. Following that, I again cleared that single DTC. At this point, I tried to start the car again. It cranked, and fired for maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a second. I tried again, and same thing, had a very brief moment where it "started" but then died. I then ran another scan:

Third Scan. DTCs were cleared. Tried to start. Turned over, fired twice for maybe 1/4 second.
Would not start. Turned key to off, then back to On and ran autoscan.

After that, I cleared the codes, shut the car off, and turned it on again probably 3 or 4 times in a row. I drove it to the gym that evening, then the grocery store the next day. No issues at all. So, basically, I didn't so anything to it and it seems magically fixed?? Which is a bit unsettling and not exactly confidence inspiring. The only thing I really messed with was the battery. But I've had it die in my other S4 without nearly the same issues. And that very first time it wouldn't start a month ago, I cranked that thing for at least 2-3 minutes total while troubleshooting and it was cranking strong nearly that whole time/

What gives? Loose ground? Flaky ECU? Magic pixies? Wonky battery? I want to use this vehicle but without knowing why it stranded me 300 miles from home it's hard to trust it won't do it again without finding out WHY. Thanks for reading, hopefully someone has some idea...

    Update

Per request of JHM, I pulled the ECU. Here are some pics of the ECU board before and after opening. Can anyone tell if this is in fact a chipped a ECU? My emails with JHM seem to indicate they think it is flashed not chipped, maybe they are confused? Quote: "The file is not a “chip” This is a flash tune." I don't know what to think. Anyone know what the stock vs modified ECU would look like?

Side note, battery is less than 2yrs old as well.

Looks like it was opened before? All I did before this photo was take the screw out.

The fact that they wrote on the housing makes me think they had it to chip it. Hard to write on it with a flash tune. Unless it was converted from a chip to a flash like mine was.

Yeah, the email they sent back to me was surprising. I replied with a couple questions last night but haven't heard back yet, so maybe he was looking at something else? Or typed his response backwards or something, IDK. Gonna wait for him to reply and confirm I guess...

When they convert to flashed tune do they remove the chip or leave it?

So I ran into an issue back in September 2012, the day after I installed my JHM tuned ECU. I drove the car that night and the morning after it would crank over but not start.

I sent the ECU back to JHM for them to check and it had a clean bill of health.

Turns out the power relay had blown (between battery and ECU). Replaced that and the battery and it fixed the issue.

They remove it. It would serve no purpose, other than be a possible problem.

Did the car ever start between the first failure and before you sent it in? That's what is confusing me; it worked, then it didn't; then it worked again.

I was stuck in the underground parking garage at the Whole Foods in Austin, TX. I tried over the course of about 2 hours to get it to start but no luck. That's when I had it towed to the shop.

Thoroughly Confused - No start/electrical issue? Magically Fixed?

Sticky relays might work intermittenly yes. So id start with that then check if youre getting fuel and go from there.

Or problem is with the ecu itself. Why would they open it if it was flashed? Seems odd. If it was chipped before and then flashed i wouldnt want to have that ecu in my car.

    Update...

Been driving the car without issue for a few weeks now. Haven't changed anything. I need to take the ECU again at some point and redo the seal between the two halves, but other than that don't plan on changing anything.

JHM responded about the ECU chip vs flash, so that seems to be clarified:
"That ECU has been opened in the past and the chip removed and the ECU converted to flash technology. That being said, the only way the ECU would be an issue at this point is if the ECU itself was failing. This is possible but unlikely. I'm not sure where to go on this from here to help you without the car being here."

My 100% spitballing/conjecture theory at this point is that there is a flaky relay that has low tolerance for voltage differences, coupled with the cold weather and few consecutive quick starts that morning which killed battery voltage enough to piss off the relay. But I don't know haha

Going to drive it to/from work and around town a few more months and see if anything happens. Not sure what to chase at this point. Ż\_(ツ)_/Ż

    that makes sense...

My battery was on its way out at that time too, so my issue was likely a combination between the weaker battery and degraded relay.

    thanks for the update

    JUST KIDDING

Wife went to start the car this afternoon, same problem.

Get home, hooked up VCDS. Lots of short to ground/intermittent crap, lots for door locks, automatic seat stuff.. some stuff for no or intermittent communication with engine.. (I'll post up the log once I pull it off my laptop). Battery down to ~8v and 10% (only tried cranking it 5-6 different times, 3-5 seconds ea). Can a short somewhere KILL the battery that fast without fireworks?? Currently have the charger on..

    Where/what the hell is "Supply Voltage Terminal 30 35-00 - " ?

Anyway, in terms of current situation. Basically JHM made a mistake the first few times when they told me the ECU board did not have the encryption chip. After some help from others not on this forum, JHM finally got on the same page and confirmed it was indeed chipped. They have agreed to remove the chip and convert the ECU back to flash technology (for a fee, of course ). I boxed up and sent out my ECU yesterday, so hopefully I should have it back sometime next week and (fingers crossed) have a reliable avant again.

I won't be convinced this will be the fix until it's back and running for a few months, but it seems like it should do the trick. I'll try to update here once the ECU is reinstalled.

ECU was returned. Fired up the first try, then now it won't start again.

PRNDS and EPC are lit up now. Clearing a P1866 (auto trans code) lets the PRNDS highlighting disappear, until I try starting again then it returns.

So apparently the ECU fix didn't actually do anything. Unless it is good and something got out of whack with the immobilizer (but no codes in immo address, and car won't start - i though immo would let it start at least 2-3 seconds?)

So frustrated Car still stuck in driveway

You might be confused a bit with terminology and thus making it tougher to communicate with JHM. Back in the day, like 20ish years ago, they would physically need to open the ECM, replace the ROM or EPROM with a performance "chip" Now, unless anyone knows otherwise, it's all done by flashing. New software is uploaded to the ECM and it's done. There's no need to change a chip as the new ECM's have re-writable components. Some people still use the term "chip" even though that's not physically done anymore. I have seen some ECU's that can be flashed via the OBD port in the car, but there are also ECM's that need to be physically opened to be flashed. The pictures of your ECM seem to appear that yours was flashed at some point by JHM.

Doesn't help with your starting issue though

Which relay specifically is this? I've checked a bunch, I may have checked this one.

    Anyway,
The PRNDS being all illuminated seems to have gone away. I let it sit a few hours with the battery completely disconnected from the car and a charger on it (was down just under 12v from all the attempts//fans this morning). I tried cranking 5 or 6 more times this evening, key on & key off in between. Still no start, but the PRNDS issue seems resolved..

Battery light still on when key is on and cranking though, even though it seems nearly fully charged (15+ V). I'm beginning to lean towards a flaky alternator maybe? Sending bad voltage or spikes through the system? I dunno.

Now its just Check Engine, Battery, and EPC lights on the dash.
See video of start attempts (its hard to hear over that infernal door dinging, but cranking starts at 0:26 and 0:39). Battery charger was showing 15.7V and 95% prior to attempts.
