Best summer tires for our car?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Put the summer setup on this weekend and its not looking so hot. Looking to buy a whole new setup.

What are you guys running and what do you like most? Im looking for a tire that wont kill the bank, good in rain, doesnt allow me to feel every imperfection in the road, and is more performance based.

Many people like the Micheline Pilot Super Sports. They're pretty popular. Some also like the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo2's. I run Nitto's and love them.

You can check out the wheel fitment thread and might get some info there.

I think we'd first need to define that "kill the bank" threshold.

A dollar value has not been established but not looking for the most expensive nor the cheapest tire.

I forgot to mention i am looking for a tire that has a longer tread life than others

Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position, excellent tread life for a high performance summer tire. I also think there might be a rebate going on right now.

I run pilot super sports. No issues with them. The new pilot sport 4 might be what your looking for but they are on the higher price range similar to the pss

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S. Honorable mention goes to the old Super Sport, but the 4S have better tread life (which offsets any price difference by itself) and everything about the new tire is better.

BTW, PSS tread life was already fantastic for a tire of it's stature. On my M3 I got 23k out of the rears and am over 32k on the fronts.

Seconding the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S. The Pilot Super Sports were fantastic and the 4 S are even better.

Another vote for S04 Stones. Ran through multiple sets of PSS's and never got more than 20k out of them. My rigorous testing determined that the S04s have 95% of ultimate grip/feel and 150% of wear of the PSS for 60% of da $.

I previously used nitto motivo all season tires. They have a 60k treadware warranty. Still looked new after 25k miles. Low cost long lasting a good performance. Plenty of grip for fun on public roads. PSS are great but not for everyone at the cost and certainly not needed if you are just daily driving with some spirited here and there. I switched to PSS after having puncture that couldn't be repaired otherwise would still use the motivo's

As others have said, my list would start with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and PSS. The Bridgestone S-04 is less expensive and heavier, but also cheaper and a pretty good alternative (Stiffer sidewall too). For an every day tire, my personal list would end here.

People seem to like the Conti DW quite a bit, and the Hankook Ventus Evo is known to run pretty narrow and stretchy if aggressive wheels are your thing (S1 being more stretchy than the S2). Both are pretty well priced options.

If all out performance is your priority, the Bridgestone RE71 is great, just don't expect a long life out of them.

My impression of the V12 Evo versus the S04 is that the Kooks are a small step down on grip and a bigger step down on sidewall stiffness/feel. Assuming similar $ I would go S04.

Tire Rack comparison tests rank the S-04 just a tick behind the PSS. As someone mentioned, they are a couple of pounds heavier, but without ever having tried the PSS, I can't tell how it affects performance. I just know it has been a solid all-around tire for me and was under $ 200 a tire.

I literally couldn't really hear the road at all with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4s on an S5 with 255/35/19 and the radio on like 4. The interior of the car was bone quiet compared to the Conti's that were on it. best tire on the market in my opinion. For a daily driver, performance tire that checks every box (except for snow and cold weather obviously.

    Thanks,

    Greg

Yup. FWIW, I did not notice the weight difference moving from the PSS to the S04. I don't think you would feel it in daily driving, but maybe you would see it (and the added grip) show up in slightly better 60' numbers on your "time slips", if you're into that kind of thing. Maybe.

Let's be honest. We are talking about a 2-ton sedan here...

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd notice it but to some, 5 lbs per corner may be significant. The only real con. The S04s are third on my list behind the Michelins, but the only thing is they are basically the same price as PSS right now...

I had a great experience with the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2. Better treadlife than the Pirellis that came with the car. Much better traction through corners and a lot better roadfeel than my current all-weather Continental Extremecontact DWS 06.

FWIW, I have a friend with the Pilot Sport on his S5 and he loves them.

Yeah, figured what I don't know, won't hurt me, lol!

I wish I needed tires right now, because the rebate on the Michelin PSS brings them down to a tremendous value.

Just based on long thread life.. consider to take PSS off the list. But it is an excellent performance for. But it's more on the softer side and wear out relatively faster than other tires

PSS and PS4S have treadlife warranty's so why would it matter if they wear out prior to then? You would just get a pro rated refund that you could use on your next set. Unless its different in the U.S.

Nope.. Haven't. I personally don't see the reason for having such expensive tires residually if you aren't going to track your car where these tires will truly don't. I tried them once.. They were great and now time to move onto something more cost effective like hankooks, Goodyear's, nitto, etc

I just picked up a set of Ohtsu FP8000. From what I read they are the non-name brand of the Falken 452. Same exact tire just cheaper. They cost me $100 a tire. People seem to like the Falken 452. So far I have no complaints about mine.

I've had lots of different tires on my A4s since I drive about 40,000 kms/yr. Michelins of any variant are my go-to.....mainly due to treadlife. I had a set of Michelin MxM4s on my previous A4 (yes, they are a different class of tire -touring) and they gave me 94,000 kms until they had to be replaced. I have Super Sports currently for my summer set-up, so we'll see how they last. Continentals were always noisy and didn't last long.

I just put the Michelin PS4S on and they are amazing. Super quiet. I had the PSS prior and I really liked them but the P4S is a step up for sure.

Ohtsu is Falken's parent company. The current Ohtsu line tires are superb, especially for the price. just put some 17 inch all season FP7000's on my wifes older TT, and 15's on my old 4000 Quattro. 235 WR 45 17's were $62 a piece! Very quiet and smooth riding, very responsive, great wet & dry traction. My wife even noticed her car drove better. hidden gems- I doubt the low prices will hold. They didn't have the FP 8000's in the sizes i needed, or I would have gotten them. reviews for those tires online are universally liked at the forums. one rare case were low price doesn't equal low quality.

IM(humble and highly subjective)O, based on current and past experience (old B8 S4 with PSS and with S-O4s, current B8 S4 with Hankook Ventus V12 Evos2s, current B8.5 S4 with PSS, and current RS4 with S-O4s), PSS all the way. They just feel stickier and lighter and seem quieter than the other tires, and I've had no concerns about treadwear. I imagine the Pilot Sport 4s will be even better.

Surprised to hear that about treadwear of the PSS versus the S04. I burned through multiple sets of PSSs on an RS4 but the S04s wore much longer. YMMV I guess...

FWIW, PSS has treadwear rating of 300, and S-04 has 280.

tread rating isn't standardized across different manufactures, so it's difficult to compare one from Michelin over one from Bridgestone. I have had Turanza's EL42's and RE50A's on my last car that are rated at 140-180, but have lasted considerably longer than my PSS's

anyone use the firestone firehawk indy 500? They got nothing but good reviews on tirerack and are rated super high in all categories. Not looking to spend a mint on tires but want something that will perform well and work good for daily driving (wet traction is also important to me since i travel the highway alot in the rain)

I see a couple mentions of Hankook v12... not sure about those, but i am running the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo2.

they have excellent wet traction, and seem to be an excellent all around performance tire.

I have PSS on my LW track wheels, love them. I have Conti DW on my street wheels, love those too. To be honest, the DWs perform every bit as well, but maybe don't last as long. Then again, I hear rumor that Conti is no longer making the DW, so you might be able to find some on the cheap.
