    Headbolt Torque Spec?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
AllData is saying to use 3 stage tighten:

    1. 40nm
    2. Turn 90 degrees further with rigid wrench
    3. Turn an additional 90 degrees with rigid wrench.

Is there a final torque spec for the 2.0t head bolts?

tomc585 posted this not too long ago, last post. The PDF is huge, but I'm pretty sure it will be in there.

    Thanks!

That looks exactly like the AllData stuff. It's listing the exact same procedure for the head bolts as well...but still no final torque spec. :/

In some cases following a torque spec is not desirable. The goal is to stretch the bolt to apply proper clamping force. Torque numbers only relay the amount of twisting force you are applying. Lubricants, sealants tread condition can all change the value of a torqued fastner. A slightly damaged thread could cause a high torque load and the bolt not tighten to where it stretches. The meathod indcated in the manual applies a first torque as a starting point that should be tight enough to seat/preload the parts. The remaining tighting creates the even clamping pressure.
