    Replacing stock exhaust tips

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have heard a few folks replacing their exhaust tips but haven't seen how it could be done (especially since the stock ones are welded on and already so close together). Can someone please share a link or some information on changing out or stock tips to a larger in size without doing a muffler delete or changing the stock mufflers out.

    Thanks

I had a shop install an x pipe and fit the Diamond black APR tips. Wasn't difficult at all.

I have x pipe already done. Can you take pics of the welds under the car, pics from side and pics from the rear. Also what size APR tips did you put on?

And I'm not sure if the tips from APR come in different sizes.

Here's what has been done :
    - remove oem tips by cutting behind them
    - oem pipes are 2.25" dia. and are double wall (inside piping are 2" dia.)
    - weld a 2.5" pipes offset on the inside piping
    - insert AWE tips and install clamps

Yes, any 4" outlet with 2.5" inlet and less than 8" overall length tips will fit your B8.5 following my procedure.

Did they have to drop/lower the exhaust at all?

I've ordered the ECS tips as well, but planned to install them myself at home.

Did I read that correctly that the OEM tips must be cut off?

Is welding a 2.5" pipe onto the OEM really needed?

Trying to do as much as I can on my own and don't have a welder...

You would need to weld on different piping after the stock Muffler but I'm not sure why you would do it in 2.5". The ID on both 90mm and 102mm tips is 2.25ish" to math the 2.25ish" OD of the AWE exhausts.

Shouldn't need to weld on much piping, IIRC the distance from the outer stock tips is 7" from center of tip to the stock Muffler and 8" on the inner tip. I haven't done it yet but I was going to go with 2 and 3" respectively to give some amount of adjustment.

I am very interested in replacing the tips on my S5 now that the exhaust is all dialed in. What are your thoughts on these:

4.5" might be a tight fit (meaning they may touch each other on the inside)

Yeah, I may have to go with the 4 inch version? The inlet is 2.25, so that "should" be an easy task.

Mine took 30 minutes with the exhaust still on the car. With 3.5" tips from amazon the whole ordeal was less than $200 CAD with tips and labour. Fitment in the diffuser is perfect (b8).

So here is why you need to weld on "extensions". The shape of the exhaust pipe before the tip is oblong. I don't see how to do this without a shop or at least a welder, which I don't have. Also, Amazon has several styles and sizes from the vendor I selected. I thought I chose the 4 inch tips but was sent 4.5. I do have an aftermarket diffuser, but I believe that the 4's would fit better? Does 4 equate to 102mm that others are using?

mine have a lot more straight pipe then this, I could definitely have clamped on some tips. I decided to weld anyway though. So it looks like S5's don't have enough pipe available to clamp on tips.
    Yes, 4" is 102mm. (4x 25.4 = 101.6)

No issues here, Just round, 3.5" tips from Summit. I used clamps at first, then had a shop weld them. Fits cleaner and fills the hole better while still looking OEM.

just clamped all four. i kept the 200+ for weld.
welding is absolutely unnecessary if you have 2.25 in, 3.5 out tips.
i got creative with making the inlet snug and positioned properly.

Could any of you guys who have replaced your tips post a link to what tips you used? I hate the stock tips. I want something more aggressive like your tips JeriQo. This is what I have for piping under my tips currently: IMG_0548.JPGIMG_0546.JPG

Disagree. I have changed tips before on my S3. Went up an inch from the stock tips (it was only a twin exhaust on that model) and it changed. It was only slight but it changed.

That's why I'm asking as it may change it.....

Tips have no affect on the exhaust gas. They will not change the sound of the exhaust.

Incorrect. The same gas blown through a different diameter opening will sound different.

Yes let's. But just as an example, Trumpet players often use a bung to change the diameter of their instruments end. That changes the sound. If you roll a piece of paper and only widen one end when making a sound through it, the sound changes. Only slightly but it does change.

You are talking about something that uses a transition of the flow through the pipe when talking about instruments. This is not how the exhaust tips work. Take an even larger diameter pipe and place it over your tips now.. it will not change the sound as the exhaust has has already expanded to become ambient pressure.

Got the tips welded on, I also had the baby resonators cut off on the downpipes, it has a little bit of sound and no drone.

I cut the baby resonators to mimic integrated tuning down pipes without the high cost. Happy with the decision. I may add the magnaflow resonated xpipe in place of the center res at some point but haven’t decided yet.

The total cost was just over $200, got a good deal on the tig welds, tips, and pipe in place of the baby resonators!

Hey sorry to uplift such an old thread - I'm new here.

I want the akrapovic tips but their dimensions are either 54mm or 63mm in.
54 I guess is to small to fit over the stock piping when cutting away the oem tips and 63 it to big?

I found this adapter which slides over the 2.25" pipe and makes it 2.5" so the akrapovic tips will fit perfect.

    Hope this will work 😁

So I have exhaust tips ready to go. I reached out to a recommended shop and they told me it would take 3-5 hours of labor and they wanted the car for 2-3 days. That nuts, right? The tips I bought are 2.25 inlet, so they should not need any extra work weld on.
