    Sports Exhaust vs Standard Exhaust

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I see a lot of great information on center muffler deletes on the Forum however I have not seen much on the difference between the Factory Sports and non-Sports exhaust.

    Can someone explain the difference?

    Thanks.

The Sport Exhaust that came with my RS7 looks like (I'm pretty sure it is) a re-badged Akrapovic. As far as I know, Audi are making no HP-/torque-gain claims as a result of its presence. However, having heard the non-sport and sport exhaust side-by-side, here's my best assessment: they sound different ... I know, I'm a genius. All Akrapovic exhausts have the same positive effect to my ear, they make the overall sound a fuller thrum across the rev-range--less mechanical interference... that's the best I can do to describe it.

FWIW: if I were given the choice of having almost $10,000 back in my pocket or keeping the exhaust... Hawaii here I come--the stock Audi exhaust isn't as good but it's more than good enough (the same can't be said for BMW M-cars that benefit hugely from the Akrapovic BMW-branded performance exhaust).

    Thanks Limypride. Good info.

Does the OEM Non-Sports exhaust and Sports exhaust have the same configuration- meaning front resonators, mid suitcase, rear mufflers and valves.?

I highly doubt the sport exhaust is a re-badged Akrapovic unless it's a much much lower grade than what they sell direct for $8kish. Especially since the 2016 RS7 "Sport exhaust with black finishers" option 0P6 is only $1,000 and the S7 Sport package option code PSS which adds "Audi dynamic steering, quattro sport rear differential, Sport exhaust w/ black finishers" is only $3,500.

But I have heard that the Akrapovic exhaust IS available as an option for about $9k

It is and it adds quite a bit of HP and Torque... def more than what the Akropovic website states...

Nice! Did you pay $1k or $9k for it? Just wondering if there are actually 2 sport exhausts.

For me, it came as part of the Titanium package which is where the other interior/exterior upgrades on my car come from. Oddly, that package (including the exhaust) is less than the exhaust itself a-la-carte... go figure.

    This thread was sidetracked.

I am bringing it back again to see if others will chime in.

What is the engineering difference between a sports exhaust and the standard exhaust- as there is a significant sound difference between the two.

    Thanks.

Interesting... I have a sport exhaust from a 16 s6 on my 13, all resintors in place and stock downpipes right now, and I would say it's maybe 2x louder, which is not much since the OE pre-face lift is basically dead silent.

I have no "pops and bangs" and a pre facelift should not really have with a 16+ sport exhaust as I am pretty sure those are created within the tune by manipulating the fueling, not created by the exhaust itself.

Do you have downpipes or any other exhaust changes?

Hmmm. I don't think I know enough about the difference between the various exhaust options to draft a useful comparison. That said, I can say that my exhaust doesn't have enough levels in between quiet and obnoxious; it's either meh... or ROOOOOArrrr'F'u#c#kuuuuu! Personally, I drive most of the time in the latter but I'd genuinely bias a middle-ground were it available...

You have an Akrapovic so not the same as regular sport exhaust under discussion here. I had test pipes on my Akrapovic so you haven't even heard how loud that system can be.

With the facelift cars in the mix there's 3 systems in the wild as far as what comes stock.

Non-sport was the only option from first years to 2015 (US), unsure on the RS7 when they got the first sport exhaust option but the RS cars have always been the louder cars with pops and bangs.
Sport with black tips from 2016 (US) and up as part of the sport package. Louder than non-sport and some burbling, more pronounced when adding downpipes and or tune.
Audi Sport (Akrapovic) I assume this is from 2016 (up) and up.

Akrapvoic has sound clips of the differences. For most owners we listen from a decently insulated cabin vs. outside.

I have made some interesting observations regarding RS-6-7 and S7 sport exhaust compared to S6. I purchased a 2017 RS7 sport exhaust from a member to install on my 13 S6 which came with a standard non sport exhaust. Differences between the Sport RS version is that it weighs less and the tail pipe are shorter and tapered to fit the RS diffuser which has 2 big oval exhaust built into it compared to the S6 separated and extended exhaust tips. I had it installed with out the tips to later return and have tips adapted to it since I wasnt going to get a RS rear diffuser adapted to my bumper. The sound was 3x louder and I heard the pops and bangs. I had the exhaust tips installed yesterday now pops and bangs are gone and only 2x louder with a nice tone.

    Thanks widebodyfx.
Good summary of the 3 primary exhaust options.

When you consider your 3 exhaust options above then factor in...... a tune, downpipes, front resonator removal, suitcase (mid muffler) removal and rear muffler removal, the combinations are endless.

In addition recorded sound bites are only so good- you really need to be "in person" to get the full effect.

Although I have still not heard anyone explain the engineering differences between regular and sports exhaust, I found the right combination for me.

I discovered the Individual Mode in MMI- so I can keep the rear muffler valves open all the time, in Dynamic Mode while all other options in MMI are in "Comfort Mode." It's the best of both worlds- cruising comfortably with a bit more exhaust note.

I have the sports exhaust on my 16 RS7 on the window sticker it says “sports exhaust with black finishers” the tips of the exhaust can be seen inside the oval back. I kind of want to get that meshed to connect to the oval. Definitely not the akra. I believe it has resonators, mid muff, and rear muffs. Definitely get pops and bangs and it has a pretty good tonal range. In the future I may be doing downpipes but as for right now she’s pretty solid.

Sports exhaust has more pops and crackles - amplifies when you do a muffler delete at least on my C7.5 S6.

Is the C7.5 Sports exhaust standard or optional? I've been trying to source one from CPO for a while and most dealers seem to be completely clueless, claiming there isn't even a PSS Sports Package option code available on the 2017/18 build sheets. That sounds to me like salesmonkey bullshit.

It comes with the S sports package. This is my 2018 S6 window sticker. When looking at a CPO just ask them to send you the window sticker so you can confirm what is on the car. Plenty of clueless salesmen out there.

I'm curious about this with regard to the sports-exhaust. (Since I do not have it.) If you have VCDS can you try testing by setting your soundaktor to 0% volume and seeing if changing "engine sound" in your Individual mode actually makes any difference at all. I know on the non-sport exhaust the valves are only open in 8-cylinder mode and closed in 4-cylinder mode...that's it...any "extra" sound is provided solely by the soundaktor.
