P0303 fault code. Engine light flashing car shaking at > 60mph

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So this morning when I got on the highway, car suddenly started vibrating and seemed like transmission is slipping and not able to engage on a higher gear as I was stepping on the gas and car won't go any faster. immediately engine light came on and was flashing. I let go and was trying to step on it again and same symptom. I pulled over, stopped the engine. a minute later started and drove on manual and wasn't going over 50 and slowly made it to AutoZone to do a check. Their device says Cylinder 3 misfire with code P0303.

I also called the dealer on my way and they said not to drive if the light was flashing ( light wasn't flashing when I was under 50 and no vibration was there but when the car was shifting, I felt this kick each time). Dealer recently(less than a month) changed pistons and rings as part of stage 2 oil consumption. Also replaced the turbo. The car has 78K miles, it's a 2.0 Turbo FWD with CVT transmission.

Dealership wanted me to bring it in but if this issue isn't related to the work they've performed, are they going to charge me for the diagnosis? Is this something I can repair myself?

Thanks and much appreciate any help.

No need to take it to the dealer?

Any recommendation on what ignition coil and spark plug to buy? I read there were issues with the original and there's a revision?

    I'm looking at these two
    http://www.rmeuropean.com/Products/0...4-fe653dabf756

    http://www.rmeuropean.com/Products/0...7-d003933221a6
(their site says this one will not fit my vehicle but according to ECS tuning, it will!)

    recommendation?

Not at this time; a simple ignition coil and spark plug replacement is the first thing to do.
If that does not remedy the situation, then bring it to the dealer [which dealer?] that completed the previous work.

If not, you'll work the OEM equilient spark plug: NGK PFR7S8EG [#1675].

Regarding the ignition coil, the correct OEM part number is 07K-905-715 G.

No mods to the car. That's the plug (PFR7S8EG) I added to my cart.
The dealer gave me 07K-905-715 F and not a G. The link you gave me, their website says it doesn't fit my 2011 A4! Neither did this: http://www.rmeuropean.com/Products/0...7-d003933221a6

Is it safe to buy the link gave me and is it ok to change a single coil and spark plug?

Thanks a lot for your help.

The "F" is merely the revision. "G" is the most current - ECS Tuning has them on file:

    Note the previous revisions: 07K905715D, 07K905715F, 06F905115F, 07K905715E, 06F905115E, 06H905115B

The link I provided from RMeuropean is accurate - those coils [07K905715G] will fit; I don't trust RMeuropean's fitment guide - it's poor and improperly configured.
Have a look at the OEM Audi catalog from your 2011 and see what's been discontinued:

I would say yes - there's compelling evidence compared to the OEM Audi catalog, those hyperlinked parts will work - just pick you brand.

You might want to discuss this with the dealer if stage 2 was recently done. Would suck to discover a more serious issue later on.

What confuses me is, when I was driving it yesterday, the engine would shake like crazy on D but if I switch to Manual and slowly shift it, the hesitation and vibration drops to 20%. I've never experienced a ignition coil failure so I'm not sure if this is how it feels!

Head north to Broomfield and lets do a VAG-COM scan and some quick testing.

You definitely had some MAJOR work done to your car. The fact that within weeks of a major overhaul and complete tear down of your engine, I'd be back at the dealer of such major issues and have them back up their work. If the cigarette lighter didn't work or your radio stations were erased try a DIY. I'm all for DIY'ing but for such transmission, misfiring, shaking issues, I'd have them back their work up and take them for a test ride. Dealership technicians aren't machines and can make mistakes. From the questions you're asking if you or the dealer should change a coil and plug, I'd rely on the dealer to take a look. Like all the suggestions from our group, try the path of least $$$ and keep your fingers crossed. The longer you wait to bring it back if the DIY doesn't pan out, the easier it will be for the dealer to say, "It Ain't Us" after a month of no problems.

A little update. This last weekend, I swapped the coil packs and even the spark plugs and code came up on the same bank. Ordered some NGK plugs and a single coil last week that arrived yesterday. After replacing all spark plugs and coil#3, went for a test drive lat night. The car is running like before! No more shuddering!

Maybe it was spark plug? I still plan to take it to the dealer and have them look at it to see if there's more, but at this point, I'm happy that the car is running and the issue went away. I plan to replace the rest of the coil packs(soon) as well.

Thanks to everybody who helped out. Much appreciated.

Another update and not a very good one.
So the car started doing the same thing this morning as I was trying to pass another car and stepped on the gas (same as last time). Started jerking and not able to pickup speed.

Stopped at auto shop immedaitely to get it scanned and it came up as P0303 and P0304 and multi misfire. Just a side note, I still had the check engine light as I never cleared from the last issue. so when it shows P0303, it's probably from the last time? and the new misfire is in cylinder 4?

My last fix was to change all 4 spark plugs and replaced just 1 single coil pack (cyilnder 3).
Should I go ahead order 3 more coil packs and get the others(1,2,4) replaced?

    Please advise.
    Thanks.

Just an FYI I had the same issue and ONLY repalced the coilpacks the 4 and it fixed my problem but as other members have suggested if you've had stage 2 done bring it back to the dealer. If they say they are just going to replace the coilpacks I would do it myself they will charge you quite a bit for them.

I would recommend replacing, assuming you've check your misfire counts with a VAG-COM.
Don't want you to waste your funds on parts that already out good.
