Took my car in for service and the dealer said my rear struts are leaking and would cost $5000 to replace. Thats crazy talk. What are some alternatives for a daily driver?

$5,000?????? You sure they didn't mean $500? Maybe they hit another "0" by accident? 5k makes NO sense.

Your car ads? Even at that it's no where close to that.

ECS sells the shocks for $563.90 each.
So the dealer wants to charge you more than $3850 in labor? That doesn't make sense. Either they screwed up on the quote or you need to go elsewhere.

Yeah....5k is SO out of line here. Hell.....you could upgrade your entire suspension for less than 5k. Even with ADS.

Can you please ask them for a breakdown of that price quote (parts + labor)? Just for our sake so we can laugh at how ridiculous they are.

I just had this done at my local shop. $1,400 for the two rear shocks, and another $1,500 for install. Luckily all under third party warranty.

In my opinion its a dealer sales tactic.

They quote you a really high amount for part replacement and hope you decide its not worth it and just trade your car in and buy a new one. Or you bite and throw them $5k to fix it and they make a nice profit. Either way they're trolling you.

could be the case, and that is a very crappy way to treat your clients if it is true.

I think it's a common dealer tactic to throw out a high number to see if you're an idiot or not. We just traded my wife's car, and their initial trade offer was horrible. I didn't call them back. The next day, they called me and her car was magically worth $2,500 more, which was reasonable, and we did the deal. When we were in the finance office, the finance guy slipped and told us that they took an A6 in on trade for pennies on the dollar, and that he couldn't believe the guy took that little for the car. So yes, they will see if you're an idiot first. That was at a used lot of a Toyota dealer (was trading a Mercedes for another Mercedes).

Same thing happened with my clutch. Had a sticky clutch pedal and told the Audi dealer I thought it was a hydraulic issue. They said you need a new clutch for $3,500. I fixed it myself with a USP clutch line, new slave cylinder, and new fluid for about $225..................................

    ^^Yep

Car dealers will always try the "more money that brains" logic with customers

Even my sister in law who has a horrible V6 Charger, the Dodge dealer pulled you need a new air bag and wiring to solve the issue (air bag light was on). Cost over $1000 on a 3 year old car! couldn't believe they fell for it. Even when it was in for a TSB, magically there was another issue on the drive home. Had to tow it back, and still charged them over $300 to fix an issue that i know they caused.

$2499 quote for front and rear pads on our Q7. Cost me $500 and 3 hours of my own time for new pads AND rotors installed in the driveway.

I ask them for the quote in writing and post it so we can publicly shame them.

Sure it wasn't the rear axles? Even that seems way too high, but at least that's something that seems to leak on the rear....

It's through Fidelity. The shocks were leaking, which constitutes a failure of the part.

About 15 years ago the audi dealer quoted my mom $175 to replace a fog light bulb on her A6. They claimed they needed to remove the front bumper. There's a reason they're called stealerships.

Rears are shocks. Odd they would make a distinction anyways. Both can wear and/or both can have failures. Like a tire can have sidewall blowout/tread separation and be warrantied if newer or under failure warranty and its not from wear
