Who has had their T stat or PCV valve replaced?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Also, at what mileage and at what cost if it was not covered by warranty. Here is my problem. I have 72k on my 2011 6MT. I have silver level extended warranty from Fidelity that will expire on 4/20/17. The car is consuming about 1 qt of oil /2000 miles and I suspect it is the result of the PCV valve. I also expect that if an oil consumption test were to be performed, my car would not use enough to meet the artificially set high limits that Audi uses to determine excessive oil consumption. I expect the t stat to fail at some time in the next year or 2 but probably after my warranty expires. My plan is to replace the PCV valve when the SC is off, if and when the t stat fails. My car does not fall under the TSB for PCV valve replacement. Trying to decide whether to just keep putting oil in it, proactively removing the SC and replacing the T stat and PCV valve, or extend my warranty for a longer term. OR trade my car in fro a newer certified S4. However, my specs for a repalcement car have not ben easy to find and I would much rather keep the car I have. Thanks in advance for your thoughts

Specs fora 2013 or newer Certified S4 under 40k miles would include:

Red color preferred including Brilliant , Misano and Volcano. Would consider Estoril and Sepang Blue. Black as a last resort but not Brilliant Black
Black or Magma interior. Prefer not to have Alum trim but that is not a deal breaker.
6MT, Sport dif, B&O Nav, 19 " wheels(I realize those can be changed if necessary). Don't want Black optics package and like Alu optics.

The dealership quoted me $1,400 to replace the PCV as it is an 8 hour job with the removal of the supercharger. If they do replace it, it would come with a 12 month/12,000 mile part warranty.

    Thanks,

I paid $1400 all in for my PCV replacement. Mine was done at an independent shop.
Just a quick question, but how does Audi measure oil consumption? Do they fill it up then have you come back in when the light goes off? If that is the case, you could, maybe, you know...draintheoilin500milesthentakeitbackintothed ealership. just sayin. because it is your PCV, audi has stupid high limits to oil consumption and you have paid for that warranty.

Doesn't, the audi extended warranty specifically exclude repairs " the correction of oil comsumption" I have platinum plan and there is an exclusion for repairs relating to oil consumption. I wonder if PVC valve replacement would be excluded. I would hope not, bad PVC valve cause oil comsumption, think they are concerned with bad rings , not PVC VALVE.

I was told that they weigh the oil. You then drive it for 625 miles. They drain the oil and weigh it again. Whole procedure cost about $ 400 which will be reimbursed nous the deductible IF . They find a problem . You can buy a lot of oil for $400. Doesn't seem reasonable to have it done

Just think how much oil you could buy for $400.
Especially if you buy on line and pour into the motor yourself.

Or maybe buy and install a catch can.

Do it on your own. Taking the blower off is easy.

Like I said in the other thread, I think it's just cheaper to add oil. I mean, unless you're going to replace it yourself. It's a little of a hassle to add oil, but I use the #2 computer and GasTracker to record how many miles it's been since I last topped off. So, I know basically down to the week when the light is going to come back on.

With 5K oil changes and having to add a quart in between changes, that's 20 quarts of oil per 100K miles (if my math serves me right). 20 quarts of Mobil 1 0W-40 is like $100. That's cheap. Most of us will get rid of our cars before that $100 is spent anyway.

Although the oil consumption bugs me, I am more concerned with the T stat failing. I can live with adding oil. That costs me $25 for 5 qts of Mobil 1 European formula @ Walmart. T sat will cost much more. I will only address the PCV valve if and when there is another reason to remove the SC. I also assume it will cost me more than $1400 to extend the warranty. But I will explore that option.

My local Indy Audi mechanic did the Labor for $200. The replacement ventilator cap and spring was less than $20 from ECS

Had my PCV valve replaced at around 40,000 miles for just under $1300. Running on original t stat with about 43,000 miles now. I'm sure it will fail tmrw due to this post.

For those of you who replaced the T-stat, how did you determine that it failed?

I'm stuck where my coolant temp is starting to rise and my fans run a lot higher (louder) as well. But, with the heat on, I can keep the temps down and drive with no issues. Maybe mine is stuck slightly closed/open?

That is exactly the symptoms that occur just prior to it failing. The T stat almost always fails closed. You can wait for it to fail, but it could leave you stranded on the side of the road.

Over heating while stopped, Fans over working themselves, stuck closed.
Heater just robs the coolants heat and slightly cools.

If the heat's on, the coolant never spikes at idle and a stop.

Replacing the T-Stat though and all other gaskets and O-Rings while I'm at it.

You never reach operating temperature = stuck open

However, this is more of an emissions issue. Your car will run fine, but you'll likely pollute more.

Changing both PCV and or t-stat can be done if you're mechanically inclined. I did the t-stat with my buddy in 3 hours. Total cost, including t-stat, coolant (make sure you drain it before you start), and the rubber-band-looking seals for the intake inlets was about $120.

That's super quick. Is the PCV something I have to order online or can I get it at my local auto store ?

ECS Tuning or dealer. You have a choice of either buying a new PCV valve or a small kit to refurbish it.

What Dr GP said is correct. Get the part number and price compare the dealer to an online retailer.

We followed a DIY that's here somewhere. I'm not saying it was easy, but you'll need 2 sets of hands for taking the supercharger off/on. Navigating around the hard plastic piping surrounding the t-stat was definitely the most difficult part of it, but loosening the clamps and the piping itself is the trick. We didn't remove the front bumper. Oh, and one more thing, you'll need some string attached to a wrench to torque the belt tension-er (hard to reach otherwise).

    Good luck!
