    VW 2.5L 5 Cylinder Swap into B6 A4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys...im thinking of doing a build whereby I would rip the 1.8 out of my B6 A4 and drop a lower mileage 2.5L 5 Cylinder motor from a Rabbit or Jetta...and eventually turbo it. Im in love with the sound so that's my motor of choice, knowing that the glorious 2.2L Audi/Porsche motors would be hard to find with lower mileage or in need of a lot of work to get up and running/be reliable.

Wondering if anyone has done that swap successfully. If so, does it easily slide in and use existing motor mounts, or are we talking major modifications just to make it fit? If it does fit, I might be running an automatic (non CVT) transmission and Quattro, so any insight into mating those together or which significant mods would be helpful as well.

Im looking for this to eventually be a low boost set up, no dyno queen or anything, just an understated but somewhat surprising sleeper of a daily. Let me know what you think.

    Thanks
    Patrick

You'll need custom oil pan, engine mount brackets, modify the bellhousing, custom harness, custom intake & exhaust manifold etc

Thanks rguil. I already have a B5 S4 which will be keeping its 2.7T. 5 Cylinder noise is what I need/want.

Got it Jay, thanks. I have a shop that could probably take care of these not so insignificant mods. They are a Haltech dealer and hoping we might find a plug and play ECU solution to handle the changes. Not even sure if that's possible, but we'll see. Intake and exhaust could be taken care of with a kit I found for that motor, but custom would be ideal. The bellhousing is a whole other issue Ill have to investigate as well.

    Thanks for the insight.

keep in mind that Europe also got the option of 2L N/A.
so even if you're not going turbo, you've still got more displacement. And I've felt that engine in a manual rabbit, seemed fine. But that car is lighter and FWD.

There is also the option of looking for the actual car that 2.2L engine came in.
Manual URS6 avant. Which can cost similar to a B6 if not more, but harder to find.
However, 2.5L VW engines are more common.

Mec in the B7 section attempted this. He got pretty far into it then decided to pull the plug and move on. I think he was having issues finding someone to make the engine mounts, then life got too hectic and he just gave up basically. The b6 and b7 chassis are pretty much identical so most of what he did should carry over. I'm not sure if he made a build thread of not, but search his username and 07k and you'll probably find plenty.

There's nothing quite like 5cyl sound, that's for sure. I think 07k is probably more pain than it is worth, though.

maybe if it was already turbo.

x2. From what I gather the motor was fairly inexpensive.

Yea it was like $500 or something. I think that was why he went with 07k over VR6, the price. Well that and it was a little different.

Unless you plan of fabrcating alot of stuff yourself I would go with a 2.7 swap.Yes the 07k engines are cheap. However If you plan on purchasing the mounts, brackets, oil pan and so on.You looking at around 4 grand just in parts. To make it sit in the car without any upgrades. If your spending that kind of money might as well sway in a 2.7 and be done with it.

I say go for it, knowing that it will be the first of its kind, and very custom. You will encounter points where you want to quit, but that's how any popular swap starts for many. I mean, the 2.7 swap was in the same stage at some point, as well. Now there are so many options for getting that particular swap done, a lot of vendors getting in on the buzz and making it even easier to complete. This could be another popular swap for us, and others, if you are the one to finish and iron out all the kinks.

ZipMeUpJ nailed it dead. Nothing good comes easy, it takes one determined, and focused person to take up the challenge, and get the job done.

What is your budget? You had me going until you said "auto", "quattro", and "low boost setup"...
    After all that custom work?
What kind of boost are your plans leading you to?

If you were to ask my advice I would say go big or go home. You are talking at least $10-15k. Prices and money add up quick. I enjoy that 2.5l 5 cyl noise in my V70R when ever I want. It has a 3.5inch down pipe... but I digress. Maybe cost-wise for that engine note you are better off swapping the 2.5l into a TT or other Haldex Audi quattro vehicle. Do you want a cheap daily driver? The thing is after making all those custom modifications and the time and effort you will be in a different state of mind then. Just a few random thoughts of mine. Maybe I'm way off base? It would be nice to hear and see you have it running but are you prepared to take this on?

Thanks guys. We've got a good discussion going here. This whole thing was just about making something unique and different. It does sound like it's more trouble than it's worth in the end. My budget is definitely not huge and it was just a way to spice up the B6 that I'm after. Most of my option have been Quattro autos so I wanted to cover those bases in case I had to leave it that way.

I agree it would be a super unique build if I could get it done. But you're right, customization and time really can add up quick and I don't know if I have the patience or the wallet to support all that at this point.

I'm glad I could come and put the feelers out about the idea and not be told I'm crazy...though the first person didn't heed my 5 cylinder needs and just told me to go 2.7 or vr6 without listening.

I do love the 2.7 in my B5 S4. A friend and I track that one and it's a lot of fun. I wouldn't be opposed to finding one of those if I can get one with low mileage.

My low boost comment was just a comment that the turbo would be merely adding some fund to the auditory experience as well as some power but I'm really never going to drag or track this thing so it's not necessary for me to be chucking 30psi in it just for the heck of it. Wanted an OEM plus type of feel and wake up the 2.5 a tad just for smiles and giggles, not tire munching, uncontrollable boost that is a pain to drive on the street, but something that could still impress every once in a while.

Anyway, thanks again. I'll keep you guys up to date if I decide to go through it. I hate to say I'm not the one to be the pioneer because I'd really like to be, just don't think the bank would be very happy with me, nor do I have the real time to dedicate to documenting all this for you guys, which would really be part of the reason I'm doing it in the first place.

I'll keep a 5 cylinder soundtrack in my head for inspiration...otherwise Biturbo it is.

Check out those Volvo 5 cylinder turbo motors. The cold start sound with a stock exhaust is beautiful. Exhaust + chip (more boost) = heaven?

Here (clicky) is a TT gen 1 1.8T to 2.5 shop swap that was still not done after close to half a decade and was up for sale 3 years ago. If they couldn't do it under budget and in a timely manner... woe will befall the individual at almost every step attempting to climb this mountain.

^^^ If I was interested in swapping a 2.5 I5 from a VW into a B6 A4, I would simply go ahead, AND make it work! The shop that failed to get that TT swap after 3 years, is run by humans too, NOT robots. Just because they're a shop, doesn't make them superior to individuals. Yes, they have the budget, but without knowledge, nothing will be achieved.

My point is, I would never use a shop as a benchmark, to successfully completing an engine swap. This shop failed, due to a lack of knowledge. I on the other hand, always succeed at whatever project I put my hands to. Wiring requires a logical approach, and I'm logical, if nothing else.

If Bische can make a b6 ECU successfully control a vr6 with full OEM functionality and seamless integration I see no reason why a 2.5 couldn't work. As Nollywood said, it's simply a matter of Will and Knowledge. And possibly money.

I believe those motors actually still use ME.7x also, so even easier.

This is an amazing concept. Didn't even think to put it in a TT. Probably not that hard, they just added an absurd amount of fab work that's why it died.

It seems that if they got all the parts from the New Beetle with the 07k it would have been easier to complete.

Sorry for the bump, but I continuously come back to this idea. I love the MK1 TT. It's design never gets old to me. NLS has done at least one successful 07k swap.
