So my Audi has just under 150k miles on it and ive been thinking of getting a built motor dropped in. Does anyone know a good place to start looking for crate motors?

not really, if you don't want to build it yourself look around your area for engine builders that have experience with audi engines, in your area your likely to find quite a few, i think some vendors/builders on this forums would not be to far off from you.
Never argue with an idiot, they'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

JHM and 034 are "close-by" so they might have some of that info for you.

How "built" do you want it? IE sells "crate" motors albeit at a big upfront cost - compared to buying the parts over time and working on it yourself or a local builder.

Was just gonna say that IE is the only ones I've seen with long and short block builds you can buy

    Integrated Engineering = IE?

If i wanted to go this route, i would get a parts car and rebuild that one to drop in and part the rest out... but my apartment complex would complain.

always , I'd never build a 1.8t, wast of money in my opinion, not to knock other builds as they are well done but usable power is a big thing for me. for that price I could have built a 2.7t with fully built 2.8 heads and an efr turbo and probably have some change.

I would agree, each application has it's pros and cons., and to each person those pros and cons ebb and flow for various reasons.

2.7 is fantastic motor, but I think you have to have a penchant for pulling engines if you want to build a fast one and maintain it. As with any build, it always ends up costing more (either time or money) than you anticipate.
That said, if I were going bigger displacement I'd go the R32 engine route.

oh no doubt, if I could spend the money again it would be a vr swap, but I can pull the 2.7 in a few hours now, helps to have a lift. But in the next year I'm hoping the single turbo will make that a thing of the past.

Top mounted STK on a 2.7 I imagine would remove a lot of the trouble that goes with problematic turbos that are so far down in the stock location.

So what I'm getting from everyone is that I shouldn't waste the money on a 1.8t and I should swap to a 2.7? What would a swap entail? Would it need fab work to make it fit?

So I did some research. I'm just going to add the upgrades on what I have. Everything I've read is saying that it's extremely expensive to swap motors. I'd rather work with what I've got until she blows up on me then worry about a rebuild.

According to who? I just picked up the last 2.7 for $300 with $500 being the average, for around $1000 you can have pick up the engine with timing belt kit and headgasket kit. Make sure it comes with the harness. about another $500 and you can get most of the small parts. Whats your budget, a stage 3 2.7t with k04's is less expensive than a built 1.8 and makes the same to more power with a much better torque curve. But it depends on your budget, just a heads up nothing done with quality parts on an audi will be cheap.

if your willing to do the swap that would get you close to a full stage 3 setup with tune and intercoolers. or will easily get you a nice setup on the 1.8, such as an eliminator kit but not a built motor and bt. of those options the 2.7 is going to make much more power but keep in mind the swap takes time and needs wiring done (either a converted harness, or jumper harness) and a modified exhaust.

At our California cost of living that will not get you far... Are you doing your own wrenching? If not and in even if you are doing your own wrenching - your instincts to stick with elim upgrades are good. Limit yourself to the 300 hp range and your engine with some input and knowledgeable care from you will last a long time. Maintenance and nickel & dime issues will eat all your savings up quickly enough as it is. A build will easily double your anticipated costs especially if you are paying for labor.

You will need a lot of ancillary supporting parts. What do you have now?

In addition to turbo of sorts _ _ _ _
    Tune
    Exhaust
    Intercooler
    BBK
    Clutch
Suspension (sways optional but have a significant effect).

If you are a go-getter you will be at the end of your money quickly.
If you can hover over the classifieds like a vulture then you can stretch your dollar further.

Or you can have some combination of the 2 above options. Example I got a new oil pan from the classifieds, my Ferrea valves from ebay, Stasis BBK, Stasis center diff, and Stasis suspension on Christmas sale and so on. I exceeded my estimates easily.

Good luck with whatever path you choose.

The list gets big quick depending on what your goals are.IE prices are steep as shit. You can build your own do pickup a motor here:

    http://www.eurospecsport.com/products/engines/4c-5v.htm

Short block might be the way to go.Drop in a AEB head and be done with it.Then again this is only for the internals of the engine and man power to build these.

A place between here and there

Pick up a junk yard motor, tear it apart, pick up parts, drop off parts at machine shop, have machine shop put block together, pick up assembled block, place block back in motor. If not doing the work yourself, this is another cost efficient route if not taking Clint's advice.
