What engines can fit in a b6 S4 avant

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I had my engine pulled out of my S4 to do the timing chains. After seriously considering the expense of just the parts alone, and the fact that this engine consumes a good deal of oil and has 115,xxx miles on it

Perhaps it's time to just consider dropping something else in it instead. The car is gorgeous, I love it, and the rest of it is in pretty damn good shape

If you were my position what would you drop in it/do? Do any of the newer RS4 engines fit? Like if I miraculously find one that's been in a wreck? I've always wanted an RS4 avant, but importing one seems close to impossible. Perhaps cobbling one together from parts is the answer.

I don't think the old 4.2's fit. isn't that why Audi designed the BHF since it smaller and actually "fits" in our bays?

that is correct , the chain system made it shorter to fit in the 8E chassis.

For me it would depend on how much time I had to sink into the project.

If time was a concern I'd probably find another used BHF in great shape and use that.

If time was not an issue I would throw an LS in there (Like Vinny said)

An LS Avant would be incredible.

the only things that would truly fit wouldn't be as good as the BHF. (LS blocks do not appear to fit without extending the radiator.)

i would either resurface the bores and re-ring the pistons, find another BHF, or find another car.

Even the B7 RS4 motor is a massive pain the balls to swap in. Anything newer would be worse do to further modifications needed to mount the motor, fit it to your trans, and wire and fuel it properly.

Just find a used engine with like 50k miles. Or you could 2.7tt swap it if you have the time and money.

Easiest option is is new valve guides and seals, new piston rings, and timing chain guides. You won't have to monkey with any fitment. I just did those on mine, I'm at 2000mi on the first oil change and it's halfway down the stick. It was refurbished at 160k. I'm expecting to go the whole 5000mi oil change duration without having to top up. This engine used to use almost a quart per tank of gas previously...

Chevy corvette engine. It is the basic platform in a lot of cars like the camaro, Cadillac ctsv, vette, Chevy trucks etc.... arguably one of the best v8 platform to start on..... And and it been done before:

That car looks like poo IMO. There is no point in stuffing in an LS if the car has to get hacked up, nothing really impressive about it. There is an RS that someone stuffed a LS in by cutting the firwall and making it RWD I believe and actually looked normal from the outside.

My .02 cents having done a 2.7 swap on my old avant is don't. Just fixing the car with an OEM motor and continue to drive and enjoy it. If you have tons of time and want to swap something unique or lots of money to pay someone to do it, go for it but a good majority of the swaps done are done on the cheap and not to the full extent they should be done. Just my opinion, 2.7 swaps are a dime a dozen these days too, you'd probably be happier picking up one that is running and sell yours.

Not really. One guy did it in a B6 but never finished. I think in a B7 it should be fairly plug n' play. They both use Siemens ECU systems. If I had enough time and a garage this would be my next swap.

Some B7's run Siemens. It depends on what engine the car left the factory with.

Personally, if a car needs to be chopped up to get an engine to fit, it shouldn't be there.

also from what I've gather the older belt 4.2 fits if you remove the fans and get a pusher style fan instead, correct me if I'm wrong nollywood. A 4.2 turbo has been a bit of a dream for me in the b6. Also the 2.7 swap is dead simple if you know what you are doing, pretty much everything has been covered now.
Never argue with an idiot, they'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

A 4.2 V8 fits in the back of the Avant also.......you know, in case anybody was wondering. I actually found it fits a motor and cherry picker both quite nicely

Found a brand new BHF for just under 6k, and a used one with 50k mikes for 4.3k

My engine is in the other post with the F'd up bolt that's hardened itself into the block (see picture below).

Apparently there's only one BNS engine for sale out there at the moment.

How bad would it be to put one in. Can I use the mt6 drive train that's in the car, or do I have to switch that out too?

Here my engine from another post - the chain guide broke and was rubbing on the bolt that held it in. It has hardened and my mechanic is still trying to drill it out

m42 carbide bits are need. Crazy tho. Those bolts ARE NOT high torque AT ALL. Like 10Nm...
