NOOB to wheel set up what is offset

I have a 2010 audi a4... On sport suspension but I just ordered h&r coilovers ok... So I'm talking to 2 different venders for rims right now...I'm interested in a 19x9.5 from niche Verona... I'm talking to him he told me 19x9.5 all around with an offset of 50... And I'm also interested in the same style by rohana rc7 rims... 19x9.5 all around with an offset of 40... So only difference is ET40 and ET50..

MY QUESTION IS... I'm looking to buy rims and Lower the vehicle over them either way so which rims would give me that really flush look ORRR I kind of like that look when the tires are almost sticking out past the rear fender. If you don't understand what I mean I can link a photo. But someone please explain not what*** offset is exactly but what the difference in offset is like would ET50 stick out further than et40? Or I'll link a photo of the rims I want plus I'll link a photo of how I want the look from the ass end I'm going for a compleltly flush look or rear rims kind of sticking out past the fender I know tires play a roll in this so this is strictly what offset is and what it will do from Say hubcentrick to offset of 20 to offset of 50 what is the appearance difference and is there any downfall in this AND if I have an offset of 50 can I lower that? Or if I buy a Rim with an offset of 40 if I chose can I raise that? Thank you

These are the rims I'm interested In. I want this look... But their available with an offset of 40 or 50 which one will make them stick out away from the car more? I know I can Always wheel spacer them but I would rather just buy a rim that gives me the look I'm interested in. And then go with a fat tire or stretch a tire I have to do more re search thanks in advance for anyone's help.

First, lets discuss the definition of WHEEL OFFSET:
"The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel."

Zero offset (et0): would mean the hub mounting surface is on centerline of the wheel.

Positive offset: The hub mounting surface is located in the front half of the wheel closer to the wheel face.
This tucks the entire wheel in toward the brakes and vehicle suspension.

Negative offset: The hub mounting surface is located in the back half of the wheel closer to the back lip flange.
This moves the wheel out away from the vehicle brakes and suspension. "Deep dish" wheels and wheels for lifted trucks are typically a negative offset.

Next discussion topic: what's the current wheel you A4 has?
This is important because it'll be used a reference to compare the new wheels you're looking at in terms of fitment.
So what WIDTH and OFFSET are you current wheels?

In regards to your 40mm versus 50mm offset question... short answer: the 40mm offset wheels of the same wheel width will stick out 10mm farther than the 50mm offset wheels.

You can also use this link. If you put in initial specs of wheels and then the new specs it will draw a little image to show if it is sticking out more or less.
