Exclamation '07 2.0... starts... dies... sits... PUMP AND ECU relays didn't solve it (HELP)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Looking for some suggestions here on what to prioritize...

Previously started my car... started to drive... got about 10 feet and then it cut off and died. Each time it started right back up and ran perfectly. Third time came today in the midst of torrential rain and it would NOT start back up. It sort of wanted to, but either wouldn't really fire, or fired and choked right out. It eventually did start after sitting about 10 minutes and ran fine there after. Not sure if it is relevant but each of these times I had already been driving the car and then stopped to run a quick errand and this happened on restart.

I ran VCDS for faults and had nothing. I listened for vacuum leaks and couldn't hear anything and didn't see anything (although we all know they can be hard to spot or hear).

The PVC valve had been replaced about two years ago under a recall... is there a way to tests that as a culprit? And what about crank sensors, etc.? Not sure on the age of the fuel filter, but it's probably been a while.

Thoughts on what to look for?!?

    TIA

I had a fuel pump relay issue that sounds similar to what is going on with your car. It's an easyish fix and cheap to put a new relay in so I'd start there. Relays are located under the ecu which is under the plastic cover between the firewall and engine bay.

I take it there's no way to test the relay short of getting to the relay, huh?

I'd hate to rip out the ecu and deal with those brackets etc if I don't have to.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago and could not find a clear cause. No codes. I replaced the two 614 relays under the ecu and it has been fine since. Replacement was not too bad. JHM has a video about removing the b7s4 ecu that shows the process. The ecu is just lifted up to access the relays. I removed the wiper arm with a carpenters claw, rubber mallet, and piece of wood. I removed the back ecu cover bolt with a flex drill adapter.

Thanks Kevin. Is that one of the same relays RickB_7 was referencing? You also stating you were having no codes showing is slightly reassuring. Do you recall the cost, or have a parts source?

Yes, one of the 614s is the fuel pump relay. I am not sure which one of the two. I bought two from jhm for $15 each. I have read you can also get a compatible relay from local auto parts stores. I can't say for sure this fixed the problem as the two relays I removed looked fine and the ecu box was dry and clean. Time will tell.

So, one of the 614s is Grey... the other black... is there a difference?

I can find a black 614, but the guy at Napa is telling me the circuits are different on the grey one. Frankly, this sort of thing is over my head... But it looks the same to me.

BTDT. My B7 S4 did the same thing. It's that ECU sensor under inside the ECU box. No start, rain... it seems the B7 ECU box doesn't drain very well and it gets to those sensors. Some boxes have been known to have a pool of water sitting in them.

Mine didn't trigger the CEL, but there was a code. Dumb...why it the world did Audi design a light to not come on to check the engine that doesn't start?

I had no luck finding one locally and bought online...for $15 shipped.

Is the grey one on the left the 614 relay you pulled from under the ecu? If I remember correctly the one I bought didn't look the same as the 614 I pulled but works just fine.

Yes, that was the one. It appears the center most relay is the fuel pump because it wouldn't start with that one removed, but would with the right one out. I got a cheapo Chinese one locally but may order two from europa to be safe. I feel better work oem.

Yeah not sure how much it has to do with it, but it looks fried (heat marks on metal pins) same as mine did when I pulled it. Throw the new one and see if that fixes the problem!

The two I removed from my 2008 avant were made in Italy by Omron in 2007. I probably downgraded. OP, hope the new relay solves your problem.

You just need a relay with the right package, voltage and amperage. I got two for 10 bucks at a local electronics store. Way way cheaper than VW.

Actually, it appears Audi has superseded this part with 4H0951253A (no longer "614" - now "643"). Not sure what the advantages (or disadvantages) are with the new part.

Its just updated. Although a relay is a relay, i decided to just go with Audi parts. The difference is that it was upgraded/updated. I didnt find it to be all that expensive for the relay. I didnt want to buy a non-audi part since i dont want it breaking down on me faster. if the old one lasted from 07 to 2016. the new one should last just the same. I didnt want to cheap out on it but thats just me. I have the 643. Replaced in july, no issues from that as of yet.

Thanks for the report on yours! That's basically the same position I was going to take. I know the other ones are cheaper and will probably last just as long, but when it comes to not being stranded I'm gonna pay a little extra for hopefully a little tighter QC at the mfg. plant!

Thats how i think about it. Also if Audi engineers/whoever decided to revise it, theres a reason behind it. Not sure how the circuit looks like but im sure they changed something. So i hope that also equals reliability.

So, the newest revision is marked 644, mint green, and made in Portugal.

Everything is running and I smell no smoke so for eight now it's a win. Of course, the last ones worked great right up until they didn't.

Thanks to all that participated and assisted.

So maybe some useful information. Thinking it's either the LPFP, or the controller. Went into VCDS and went into the engine basic settings and got some fuel pressure info, etc... not sure on the numbers, BUT I did get multiple communication errors while attempting to read it.

Issue with identical symptoms was talked about in thread started Nov. 28/16 - named "Fuel pump issues", started by Cobra351. My B7 is having the same issue, and my primary suspect is LP Fuel pump contoller. My VCDS measurements have been described in mentioned thread. Colder weather in my case appeared to make the car start fine every time, now with couple of weeks of relatively mild weather, hot start with immediate stall is back. LPF Pump controller is on order, plan to replace next weekend.

Thank you... I'll check that out! I've ordered a LPFP, control module, and a crank sensor from FCP EURO. I'm trying to cover all bases to have parts on hand since they have such a great return policy. I'm waiting on some expert advice before turning a wrench and will notify you if I get something helpful!

So, this morning I installed a new FPCM and a new LPFP; last night a new fuel filter went in. After the fuel filter was added the pump cycles dropped from around 71% to around 62%, which from my understanding still isn't great. After the new pump, controller, and filter my cycles are at 51.4% so that's a massive improvement. Pressure readings all looked good and nothing burst into flames. Car stinks a little like gas, but all in all not a bad ise of 3.5 hours in total. The real trick will be in seeing whether this fixed the issue. Last resort is that I have a new crankcase sensor waiting to go in.

Confirmed solution: After replacing the LP Fuel pump controller AKA LP Fuel pump "modulator" the stalling issue as described is no more.
No more stalling, immediately after pulling out of the parking spot. Hope this helps other people, as this appears to affect our B7.
