    Hiding EZPass transponder ideas?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Trying to see if anybody came up with a good location to hide the EZpass transponder?
I have it currently mounted so that I don't see it when driving (rear view mirror) is blocking. But I woudl like to hide it entirely.
Front license plate is not an option. Also, I am looking for a permanent installation.

I found a post from someone putting into center speaker area. Does it fit somewhere else?

I can't guarantee it will work. I have played around with hiding them on other vehicles and it can weaken the signal and the toll plaza may not pick it up. I woulds say to try picking up one of the license plate transponders and mounting it behind the grille. You might be able to do it from the top if you remove the cover or just pull off the entire bumper cover. It's pretty easy. Just follow instructions around for installing a RS5 grille

I considered mounting the license plate style one on the crash bar just behind the grill. Also, I saw a post where someone took the pass and painted it black and mounted on the backside of the rearview mirror. It fit perfectly and you couldn't see it from inside the car. It was this style pass:

I have this style EZpass and have it mounted right behind the mirror--exactly the same as in the pic above. I masked off the label and spray painted the unit flat black. Nearly invisible from the outside.

So, the transponder attached to the back of the mirror? That might be a solution, especially, if painted black...
I wonder how well the Velcro sticks to the mirror. Might need some glue?

Maybe, but they aren't very heavy you should be fine.

As referenced above... Not sure that's the route I'd go, but it does seem to hide it well.

I assure you, there is a Pennsylvania EZ-Pass in full view in this photograph:

Can you see it? Let me help you out. First of all, you probably have one of these:

WRONG. You want one of these instead:

I tried requesting one of the smaller ones directly from the PA Turnpike commission, but they just sent me another giant one. I specifically go to Shoprite or one of the other authorized retailers and ask them if they have any of the smaller EZ-Passes. They never have any idea what I'm talking about, but they always find them and give me one.

Next, you want to grab a rattle can of matte black paint and do three coats. Make it look like this:

You're almost done. Take those two velco adhesive strips they give you and mount them to the passenger side of your rear-view mirror. Then stick the EZ-Pass on top of it, like this:

    Do you see it now?

It works 100% of the time, and you cannot see it from inside or outside the car unless someone specifically points it out to you.

Weird...I was just looking into this. Here in NJ we unfortunately need front plates...And i'm considering doing the tow hook plate holder. I currently have the license plate ez pass because in my opinion it looks sleeker than the white interior ones. My concerns: 1) Anyone with a screwdriver can steal my tag and 2) It won't look as good on the plate mounted to the tow hook holder

I'd like to somehow tuck the ez pass into the grille somewhere...havent found a good solution yet

I had an issue with the windshield in allroad blocking GPS and EZ-Pass signals. So I mounted the EZ-Pass to the sunroof. easy and mostly hidden.

Another option: in Florida the SunPass comes with optional suction cups so you can mount it or remove it at will. They advertise it as a portable transponder. It's great for rental cars - I'm not a FL resident but travel there and rent a car often enough that I set up a SunPass account and bring the suction cup unit with me. So with a little ingenuity I would think it's not too difficult to put a suction cup on the E-Z Pass transponder. That way you wouldn't need those ugly plastic strips on the windshield, and if you don't go through tolls every day you can leave the transponder in the door storage pocket or glove compartment until needed.

What state is this for? We have I-Pass in Illinois and it doesn't even need to be visible for the stations to read it. I have mine in my glove box and it works perfectly. Have you tested this in your states?

Just be sure to check your account on line to verify that the tolls were received - you have seven days to make good if the toll doesn't properly register. Some people report that they can do this reliably in Illinois, but have problems on the Indiana Tollway. I think their success is probably because in Illinois as long as your license plate is properly registered against your toll transponder with the IL Tollway Authority, tolls will be collected even if the transponder doesn't properly respond. But if you venture out of state, you better have the transponder out and readable by the equipment.

Good tip ChipB! I never considered mentioning that or considered that myself for road trips. However I will say I don't think it's the plate registration in IL that does it, I've though the same in the past but I have never had a front plate and despite this when I pull up to the sensor the light turns to green and it has no plate to reference. My guess is that it's just some great technology that Illinois has! Either way thanks for mentioning that because I guess it does only apply for us here in IL as a failproof solution.

Ive got an A7 and I always put mine up in the flip-down sunglass holder on the headliner just behind rearview.... You guys have that in the A5? I've never had a problem with it.

In some states they will charge you if you paint it when you turn it back in (you will have to turn it back in when the battery dies). Another solution is to request the external version and hide it in the grill. There are other posts on that someplace here in Audizine. Here's an example of the need for external transponder from Maine: https://ezpassmaineturnpike.com/EZPa....do?id=extTags

Don't mount the regular transponder externally as it won't survive the elements.

    I like durfA4's solution--mount to the sunroof--great idea.

I definitely like that one, and will try it on my S5.

I mounted it on the sunroof. Needs to be mounted toward the back to allow enough room to not block the sliding sun shade (the space between the shade and the sun roof increases as you go back). The only potential downside is if you leave the car with the sunroof tilted, someone might be able to reach in and steal it. In any case, it is off the windshield and not visible--that was my goal.

I black plasti-dipped mine so I can peel it back off when it has to go back.

In california, you don't even need to have the transponder in the car. If you're signed up, and they have your license plate on file, the cameras just take down your plate number and bill your account when you go through.

Mine is mounted on the back side of my crash bar, but behind an RS style grille, so its basically visible if you really look for it. A buddy of mine mounted his on the front splash shield, just behind the vertical slats in the lowest center portion of his bumper. No problems for either of us. We both have license plate versions too.
