    What oil for b8 s4?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2012 Audi S4, haven't owned it for a while, and my first oil change is coming up. I was wondering what spec I should be looking for VW 502 00, or 505 00 or am I off? Also I was going to go with Liqui Molly, has anyone been using this in their S4?
    Thanks in Advance!

    5w-40

I like LiquiMoly, thats the one I use. Specifically, "Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40." It's good stuff.

    Mobil 1 0w-40 is also a popular choice, and is VW 502 / 505

Liquid moly top tech is good, Motul XCess is good, and Motul Specific is good. Go for 5w-40. Welcome to the family!

Shell Rotella T6 is one of the best performing 5w-40 oils out there and it's also one of the cheapest.

I have always went with Mobil 1 euro formula 0w-40 in all my Audis. Ran it in my B5 S4 that was stage 2 and when i sold it it had 205k with the STOCK K03 turbos & still pulled like hell. In my 2010 S5 with the 4.2 i run it and it doesn't burn ANY oil in between 5k oil changes which is absolutely amazing. I may have to add a few ounces getting close to 5k, only because of my OCD'ness and having the oil perfect on the dipstick and the mmi. the 0w helps a little with the really cold start mornings in PA.

All and all all the oils mentioned above will work just find if you change every 5k. I just stick with the Mobil 1 because its always on sale at walmart in the 5 gallon jugs for like $24 each. I have always been curious to try something different, was going to try the Rotella T6 the one time but never did.

For some unexplained reason, these cars seem consume less oil with Mobil 1. I usually use either Valvoline full synthetic or Mobil 1 European formula. There are a wide range of products out there that meet Audi's specifications

Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w-40 here. Engine sounds happier with it compared to the M1 0w-40 I was running in it.

Here's a 5 liter jug of it on Amazon: http://a.co/7gZRvds

    Frequency of oil changes.

I bought my car at about 12,000 miles and had it serviced (Audi Care). It now has 22,000 and is due soon for service again. I just bought the dipstick and WOW I was amazed how dirty the oil was. Black, really black.
Looks like the Audi recommended 10,000 miles is not going to cut it. Guess I will have to take it to an oil place in between or change it my self ( I don't have a pump and getting to the drain plug is not easy).

What are other people doing? And frequency ?

    I do mine every 5k.

I have audi care as well so Audi and I alternate doing them.

FWIW, I am able to do my oil changes with the car still on the ground pretty easily.

If you buy some ramps or a jack it will make it even easier.

All you have to do is remove the belly pan to get to the drain plug. Takes all of 10 minutes.

I use a oil extractor, takes about 15 mins total, really easy and clean. I was able to get out 7.2 qts and I put back 7.2 qts.

Thanks all. I will have to look into this.

Is the oil clear at 5000 miles ? On all my previous cars I had the oil changed every 3000 or 4000 miles (non-synthetic) and it is always very clear, or at least similar to when it comes out of the can.

I wouldn't exactly say it's "clear", but it's definitely not as dark as 10k-mile oil.

IMO, most new motor oils become substantially darker even after just a few days or miles (whether the oil change was done through tradition oil pan drain or top extraction).

Then again, perhaps it's perspective? Terms like "darker" and "clearer" are subjective to a certain extent :)

I'm using the same oil extractor. I've never looked at a 10K oil. But after 5000 miles the oil is very dark and smelly...

Same here but really you can't tell anything from the color of oil nowadays. Unless of course you see silver then you might have an issue.

This is me also. I used it in my Stage 3 B5 S4 then in my B7 S4 and now in my B8.5 S4. I am a live and die by Mobil One. I have always used 0w-40 euro formula and never had any issues. I did every 4K in my B5 and then with the increased capacity with the B7 and B8.5 I change every 5-7K but not over 7K. I just check the quality starting at 5K and change accordingly. Unless your tracking the car I don't see the need for all the pricey oil's. Unless there is hard tangible data proving otherwise I am a Mobil One guy

Blackstone oil analysis done By RedRocket and others have shown that synthetic oils were still protecting at 7500 miles. So at 5k you are throwing away perfectly good oil. 7500 mile oil changes would seem to be reasonable. 10k might actually still be just fine. But I would tend to do it @7.5k unless you have had to add a few qts to top off from oil consumption. The new oil added would extend the oil change interval.

This has been posted and discussed. Based on actual analysis, the main takeaway was that changing your oil before 10K miles (if using a quality synthetic) is not needed and those that do it before that are only doing it for peace of mind.

Mobil 1 is cheaper and more easily available. It is very likely you will burn some oil using it.

LiquiMoly is the german equivalent of Mobil 1. More expensive, a bit harder to find but you do not burn oil.

I've used both and for some reason my engine drinks the LiquiMoly where as with the Mobile 1, I barely have to add any oil between changes. I won't speculate on which is "better" but, I will be sticking with Mobile 1 for the next several oil changes simply because I stocked up on oil during a sale.

Interesting, You are the only person I've heard of.

I've only tested LiquiMoly in my car and it does not burn any. Just have heard a lot of people burn with Mobil 1

Others in the forum have had the same problem with LM. Don't know that it burned but, it went somewhere and wasn't a drain plug leak. Learned that lesson early on and went with the oil extractor...

What brand oil does the Audi dealer put in? Is there one that they all use or does it vary ?

They put in genuine Audi oil, its made of tears from BMW owners.
2010 S4, DSG, too many random parts. 2004 Mazda RX-8, was highly modified then went back to stock.

Pretty sure it's Castrol Edge 5w-40. I know it probably means nothing, but the oil cap on my 2016 recommends Castrol oil. The Castrol stuff is not a bad oil per say, but it's additive package is not great either. My brief experience with Mobile 1 being that it's so cheap was that I used it as a factory fill flush. Ran it for about 2,500 miles for another flush to get all the bad stuff out. My last oil analysis already showed numbers lower than the universal averages, but as expected, the Mobil 0w-40 sheared down some.

Look at your oil filler cap. Mine has the Castrol emblem embossed on it

This is true for me. The dealer did my first change at 5K for the free one and I changed it at 10K with mobil 1. Then then I left the dealer do the 15K and they put Castrol in it again. But as far as "factory oil" I wouldn't read to much into that. The only reason that its factory because the oil because the oil company probably either made the best deal with the car manufacturer or provided them compensation for them to recommend their oil.

Any oil that has the std required by our cars or better is just as good as castrol. I wouldn't live and die by Castrol or any oil that is stamped or sticked on any oil cap unless it was a specific type of oil. Like if you look at GM's most say Dexos on them. I would live and die by that since thats a specific additive in the oil.

And when I used mobil 1 for 5K i didn't burn anything. But then again I haven't burnt any oil with my car and it has 15K on it. But i do burn coolant that they can't find.
