All transmissions use either a clutch or torque converter, including CVT transmissions. If they didn't, the engine would stall when the car came to a stop. Either a centrifugal clutch, an electronic clutch, or a torque converter. The torque converter option can be the superior choice in a CVT if done properly, such as in the new Koenigsegg.
I believe the Audi CVT uses a centrifugal clutch but I'm not certain.
