    My big-ish turbo TTS

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'd like to share my big turbo TTS build with you.

I have a much lengethier build on a local forum (in my sig) but most of that is old news now. To give a bit of background, I opted for a GTX2867... Mistake. Should have gone bigger to begin with, but the choice was out of a bit of a personal competition with a friend who has a 6R with a 28 lol.

Anyways, I moved from 1600m ASL to 0m and didn't bother adjusting my boost controller. Can guess what happens next... Ring landing shat itself. This is what spurred on this whole engine build to begin with.

My next steps are to slap on a GTX3582r I have laying in a box, but don't have the time nor energy to tear this poor thing open for a while, so this is on the back burner.

Current spec of the car is a 2010 Audi TTS 2.0TFSI 6MT - I'm not going to go into the mod list, it's nothing special and all the usual big turbo shit: HPFP, WMI etc etc.

So I finally tackled the motor build this past weekend - managed to rebuild the motor in a day *pats myself on back* this would not have been at all possible without Aluthmans awesome 2.0T thread here. If you havent read it, do it!

Anyways, The car is up and running and strong like bull, I think the head porting really made a huge difference (Not pictured on this thread, but can see it on page 11 in my sig) to the spool characteristics, the thing feels to be way more lively and the very very quick to rev up. Obviously, it's got some shitty break-in oil in it at the moment so out of pure mechanical sympathy I'm taking it easy on the abuse for the next 2 tanks or so... Anyways, Some pics:

    Saturday morning started like this:

    Straight in with the hone:

    Damn that thing worked well:

Time to check some ring clearances:

Ring clearance comes in at 0.40mm or 0.0016" if you're one of those...This is right on the mark for my application as I plan to boost the piss outta this engine.

    Dang those things look good:

    1st one in...:

    Getting there:

    Setting timing by eye FTW:

Taking a break, after all that timing nonsense... It's good to have slaves:

Whoa, it was like 10:00PM now and she was finally all done. Stickers in the bonnet because #Kommon met n' "Kaa"

This darn lock nut would not fit into my aftermarket wheels nicely without scratching them. Niggly stuff like will keep me awake at night. #latheFTW

This is really the short and sweet of it. before first start up I unplugged the coil packs and cranked it over a few times to try and build up oil pressure. What a waste of time, when I eventually started her up tappets still clattered like crazy for the first 5 seconds and then quieted down to normal. Due to the head having to go off for porting etc, I had to reassemble on the bench (got a really cool time-lapse of this actually) with no timing tools. Just for the record, if you have eyes and common sense the timing is actually trivial to do, both on the cam chain and then on the belt later... However, a nice long brazing rod down plug hole #1 really makes for a good reality check as markings on the crank pulley can be super random / dirty/ hard to read.

I must say I'm really happy with everything so far, the motor seems to idle way smoother than ever and these pistons are super quiet. Most people with aftermarket forged pistons always moan about the slap, this then requires knock sensor calibration etc and I'm just glad I don't need to worry about that crap. This is why I would always opt for something with a coating around the skirt as it really does dampen things down. I might go as far to say these are quieter than OEM... But perhaps its just a bit of confirmation bias at play.

In terms of tuning, she's being run in at 1.5 bar on the old GTX2867r still... With a heavy dose of WMI being chugged down the throat just to keep things clean. I really don't want all that assembly lube on the valves to burn onto them and mess up the shine just yet. ;D

    Next on the cards:

    1. Paint rocker cover with wrinkle-finish paint.
    2. Polish the car, it looks shocking at the moment.
    3. Try enjoy car for a while...
    4. Try not modify it more.
    5. ...
    6. Build manifold
    7. Install the GTX3582r
    8. Break it all over again.
    9. Cry.
    10. Buy a BMW.
    11. Lol, not really.

Thanks man. E-Tuners from Greece does most of the tuning and if need be i'll do some myself. They've built a couple 700+HP 2.0TFSI's (Those bloody Greeks are mental ) so they should be able to get the 3582 spinnin' lol

    Small update:

    Nothing to report* ;D

In this case, no news is good news. She's running well - I'm only about 300km into my run-in... I know, it's taking long. A mix of living <2km from work and travelling a lot is to blame.

I've decided to take her on a nice long weekend away up the west coast so hopefully by next week I will have clocked 1000km.

I did however have an afternoon to myself recently, so I managed to snap up some pics...

Those of you who met my ex BMW would certainly remember the copper wheels... Still can't get over how good they looked, so I drew up a quick render... You know, just to see how they suit the TT.

The BMW, for those that never met her:

    Hmmm...

Yep, we get boned on all of the good options here.... Would love a TTS in a 6mt. I'll just have to get them S bumpers for my VR6!

A part of me likes the 6speed. But another part would kill for the Stronic option

What did you have to pull off on the bottom to get to the crank for connecting rod access?

Great build. How much power did you end up with? Any plans for suspension or brake upgrades?

Had to drop the sump and the oil pump/ balance shaft contraption thats mounted below the crank. Was WAY easier than removing the top end though lol.

Thanks man! No plans for brakes or suspension at this point. Running EBC rotors and EBC yellow pads at the moment, but dont see myself doing much more. Air is tempting though, i've seen some beautiful specimens on airride. To be honest, i havent dyno'd her since the build. I dont really expect much gains over the old setup as its running the same file and turbo, however i will say the cylinder head porting did seem to make a noticible difference to spool and low end response. I would estimate her to make roughtly 310wkw and 520oddNM based purely on butt figures and guaged against some other cars ive driven/ lined up against.

Next mods on the list are:

    1. TTRS Grille
    2. 2014 TT Mesh fog grilles
    3. TTRS wing
    4. Another new clutch...
    5. Gearbox rebuild... Either the SMF/ my dodgy driving has caused the box to feel quite horrible lately... Did an oil change and made very little difference, so out with the gearbox will probably next up. Stay tuned for that.
