Question Crankshaft Position Sensor going out?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Im having intermittent hard starting issues. Car sometimes stumbles to life after a longer than usual time cranking when started warm, but not fully hot or cold. Car otherwise runs great.

Ive scanned the car with Torque Pro and Android phone. No codes.

The symptoms im having sound very similar to what others have reported with a failing crankshaft position sensor (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-bosch-pa...6a906433c~bos/).

If this part was failing would I be able to see codes on my basic OBD reader?

I can get the part locally for ~50CAD and will swap it out next oil change. I dont want to throw parts at a problem but if its a reasonable probability I will do this.

I just had this problem on my 3.0. It did set codes, and i had a EPC light on the dash. Rockauto had the oem bosch sensor for $37. Symptom was a slightly extended cold start, a VERY extended warm start or no start, with occasional stumbles while driving. Progressively getting worse on misfire until nearly undrivable.

Scan it with VAGCOM before bbuying parts blindly, trust me. Regular OBD's can't see or report what the correct software can.

My experience with this failure is that a code gets set at the first sign of trouble, correctly pointing you to the CPS.

But it's probably not a terrible idea to replace the sensor with an oil change on a 120K+ mile car. It's certainly much more easily done with the oil filter out of the way.

It looks like I will hold off on the part for now.

The car has never failed to start. Just dumb looking when you're in the parking lots cranking away. Maybe a code will pop up and I can make a informed decision.

I dont have access to VAGCOM and while it would be nice I cant see myself spending the money on it right now. Maybe I should have when I got the car 6 years ago but ive been doing fine so far.

Thank you and any additional input is appreciated.

Try your local forum on here and see if any of the guys can offer to scan it for free. My local independent shop offers VAGCOM scans for free as well, maybe try looking around.

I totally understand your reasoning. I don't have VAGCOM either, but without it you wont know what the issue is for sure.

There are many factors that could contribute to failing to start. When I had mine, the first thing i tired was the CPS with no luck. Try and keep a log of everything you notice that is different (louder blower motor, fuel pump issues, dash lights especially the engine management indicator when cranking). Check your battery voltage before starting, during cranking and after start.

Possibly the coolant sensor at the back of the head giving a false reading to the ECU.

I have been monitoring closely the problem and it seems to only occur when starting with the temp needle around the 1st tick (70c). Starting again immediately after a hard start the car fires right up no problems. Ive tried to turn the car, let fuel pump prime then start. Same problem.

Next thing i can think of will be to get the battery load tested at Canadian Tire or somewhere.

I am in this situation, been messaging EuroxS4 about this.

Basically took my car to a shop to do tranny re/re and upon putting everything back together they couldn't start my car.

At this point we are going to look at all the relays under the ECU.

Do you have any heat damage around the positive battery terminal? If it is temp related, that could be a clue to a temp sensor.
