What is the deal with the new Hex-V2 Ross-Tech cable?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I see these new Hex-V2 cables popping up everywhere. I have a few questions about them...

They say they work on 2015 + cars... did something change and my old HEX-CAN will only work up to 2014 Audi/VWs?

I also notice that some of these new Hex-V2 are limited in number of VINs they will scan. My HEX-CAN has yet to reach any limit of VINs

    Please advise.

Yeah, i emailed them to complain about the vin limit and got a sales pitch. Cost went up. We just get to deal with it.

To be fair, their prices haven't really gone up in 10 years...

The new cable is required for the newest generation of vehicles (B9, new Q7, etc.). If you don't plan on getting one of those for quite a while the older HEX-CAN cable will be just fine for you if you can find a used one.

They told me that the old ones will still be usable for at least a year more.

Nothing is going to change if you have the old cable. They will release a "legacy" version of the software to work with the older cables. Essentially it will just be the current version that will no longer be updated. Anything you can do now with your cable/software you will still be able to do.

The newer software will be tailored to the new cable and newer control modules it is designed for.

so I'm basically limited to scanning only 3 cars with this cable correct? Or is there specific functions that are vin limited. I've got 4 Audis so this doesn't work for me.

Linked above... $169 to upgrade a new cable to unlimited VINs. If you don't plan on buying one of the newest generation cars, stick to the older cable.

Did you read my links? You can get a 3 or 10 vin cable and you can upgrade either one to unlimited vin for 169 more.

the way I'm reading it is if I have a 3 vin its 169 to go to 10 vin after the fact and with 10 vin its 169 to go unlimited.

yes what I'm wondering is if the vin limits are even for a simple scan of a module or auto scan or what, in all the reading I've done there is nothing that outright says one vin counts as soon as its plugged into the OBD port. The way the cdn dollar has been I held off buying a hex can and regret not doing so a while ago. When I saw they were $199 initially I was excited until I started reading about VIN limits.

You're right about the upgrade costs, I think the vin is stored in the cable itself so a simple scan would count as 1 of your 3 or 10. The reason they made the new cable is because there was no more room left in the cable to store or add the new cars to it. I sent them an email about the pricing structure and they told me that 90% of the old unlimited vin cables purchased never went over 3 vins.

was reading the FAQs just now, nothing on the new cable yet but for hex net it says any car without vin info won't count, so hopefully that translates over since I have 2 B5s, brother and brother inlaw both have B5s that I'm stuck dealing with.

I forgot I wa in this section, so i'm unsure of those cars as I have a newer one and my questions relate to my circumstances. Heres my email response from RT below

The V2 is based on the HEX-NET design. At the heart of both is the same 32 bit microcontroller.
Both the V2 and HEX-NET provide a substantial increase in speed on CAN based cars. On K Line cars, the speed is still limited by the control module and there is not much difference in performance.

The HEX+CAN unit you have is limited now in that it cannot communicate with all modules in 2016 cars and even fewer in 2017 cars. We had to respond to that need. If you do not at present have a 2016 or 2017, then there is no pressing to upgrade at this time.

The HEX+CAN and all previous generation products will at some point in the future not receive further support. That is, we likely will leave a legacy version of VCDS on our web site and those that choose to keep the older designs will be able to continue using them with the legacy software. To enjoy new things, users will have to upgrade. Time line on this is not set and has been stated to be at least 1 year away and likely longer.

The difference between the V2 and the HEX-NET is the WiFI and local onboard storage. The HEX-NET also includes VCDS-Mobile allowing the user to do diagnostics on any device that has WiFi and a web browser. This would include smart phones, Apple products, Android devices and so on.

Failing them having a way to know....I call bullshit.

How many cars have you (anyone) scanned with their old HEX-CAN?? I myself am EASY over 20.

I've scanned 20+ as well, but used to advertise scans or mods/tweaks for a 12-pk of Mountain Dew. Most of my friends moved on to other cars and I haven't been involved in local groups recently. The last few years I've only used it on my own cars (3). I'd imagine many bought the cable for their own personal use. Factoring in some of the older cars not storing a VIN in the cable, 90% probably isn't too far off.

For personal use, I think 5 would have been a good limit. It would cover my current cars and anything I choose to buy/trade over the next 5 years or a family member if needed.
