    ECM cloning / swapping

I have an APR flashed ECM on my 05 A4. I bought a spare used ECM from another vehicle, same part number. What is the easiest way to clone the Immobilizer and the rest of the coding from the modules, etc. onto the new ECM to make it work on the car? Planning on running another tune on the new/used ECM when I upgrade turbos. TIA.

Is it possible to read the immo information from the APR tuned ECM using this? https://www.goapr.com/support/immobilizer.html Then copying on the new/used stock ECM? As opposed to stock to tuned ans the procedure suggests?

should be able to do it if you have a cable with a serial connection. From what I know the utility is no longer supported by apr.But this could be done. However most likey ecu will need to be removed from vehicle to read the immo chip 95040.

You can read the EEPROM via OBD however you need to put it into bootmode to if want to write to it (disabling IMMO).

If you want to adapt the other ECU to your car you will need the SKC of the replacement ECU as well as the original ECU. Once you have both SKCs, using VCDS you will log into the replacement ECU with it's original SKC and then change it to your original ECUs SKC (assuming of course your original ECUs SKC and your cluster already match). If you have a VCDS vable you can use VAG K+CAN Commander to extract the SKC from both ECUs...do a search for user imnuts...he has a write up explaining how to pull the SKC.

I have a connection at the dealer to make the new/used ECM work, but I believe this will make the existing APR ECM incompatible unless the process is completed again if the ECM was to be installed again.

If you change the SKC of the replacement ECU to match your present APR ECU (same skc as your gauge cluster) then both ecus can be swapped at any time.

Thanks for clearing this up a bit! I worked at a VW dealer for 12 years and the techs couldn't even answer most of the questions about this. I know they had to log into GEKO and get a code to program into new ECM's to work. We didn't have any cases of multiple ECM's being programmed to the same vehicle. Thanks for all your help.

When I access the cluster, this comes up as default. That's not the skc is it?

Pardon my interruption due to confusion....

What exactly does "Adapting" the ECU to your car by matching SKCs do?

I was under the impression that changing the ECU to "immo off" would negate the requirement to have matching SKC's

    I do not believe so...

Below info from user "cschuster", all credit to him.

this line below will help you...

3: Read decrypted .bin. At the bottom it will display a 4 digit number (ex. 1111). Put a 0 in front of it, and this is your SKC (ex. 01111). This number will be adapted to the new cluster so it matches the ECU. Write it down. You are now done with the original cluster.

I made a some notes on the procedure...

Here is my "cheat sheet" I made for myself, including all my dumb questions I asked...just in case someone has the same questions.

    1. Retrieve a SKC from cluster.

    - Open Vag EEPROM Programmer. For future steps, always use the RB4 dropdown list instead of the buttons. I don't know if they change depending on what mode the cluster is in.
    - Read encrypted cluster .bin file. Save file for backup. Label all .bins so you know what they are.
***If you somehow manage to brick the original cluster, put it in mode 6 (adapted) and write the backup encrypted file to it. It should go back to functioning normally. If it does not write the first time, try a few more times. Start over again.***
    - Put in mode 4 (virgin/new).
    - Read decrypted .bin. At the bottom it will display a 4 digit number (ex. 1111). Put a 0 in front of it, and this is your SKC (ex. 01111). This number will be adapted to the new cluster so it matches the ECU. Write it down. You are now done with the original cluster.
If keeping this cluster in car, put back in mode 6 (adapted)

(confirmed works. Will throw a bunch of communication codes, use Vag Com to clear them.)

    2. Set cluster to “new mode”

This is done via the RB4 drop down menu in Vag EEPROM 1.19

    3. Save a decrypted .bin file for backup purposes.

This is done via the RB4 drop down menu in Vag EEPROM 1.19

    4. Use decrypted .bin file to recover a “bricked” cluster.

    1. Open .bin file. Write EEprom (Encrypted). Hopefully this clears the error and you can continue.
    2. Set Newmode. In this mode, you can read SKC if you Read EEprom (Decrypted).
    3. Convert current mileage into kilometers. Enter in lower right box.
    4. Set Kilometer.
    5. Set Back to Adapted Again.
    6. Go through VCDS to adapt. SKC for new cluster is 0XXXX.

    5. Adapt cluster to car (ROSS TECH / VAG COM NEEDED FOR THIS TASK)

In VCDS, go into engine and write down IMMO ID. Go into instruments and do the same thing. Numbers will match. Ross tech explains this well.

    Original Cluster
1: Open Vag EEPROM Programmer. For future steps, always use the RB4 dropdown list (tabs at top) instead of the buttons. I don't know if they change depending on what mode the cluster is in.

1: Read encrypted cluster .bin file. Save file for backup. Label all .bins so you know what they are.

***If you somehow manage to brick the original cluster, put it in mode 6 (adapted) and write the backup encrypted file to it. It should go back to functioning normally. If it does not write the first time, try a few more times. Start over again.***

QUESTION – when you read then save the encrypted .bin file, is it still encrypted and able to be written directly to a “bricked cluster?

ANSWER (from Audizine user CHCHUSTER) Yes. When in mode 6 (adapted) you can only read and write encrypted files. When in mode 4 (virgin/new), you can only read and write decrypted files.

    2: Put in mode 4 (virgin/new).

3: Read decrypted .bin. At the bottom it will display a 4 digit number (ex. 1111). Put a 0 in front of it, and this is your SKC (ex. 01111). This number will be adapted to the new cluster so it matches the ECU. Write it down. You are now done with the original cluster.

QUESTION – when cluster is put in Mode 4 (virgin) the .bin file automatically becomes decrypted?

ANSWER (from Audizine user CHCHUSTER) Yes. I'm no software engineer, but selecting mode 4 must decrypt the eeprom so it can be modified.

    New Cluster
    1: Disconnect battery, install.
2: Read encrypted .bin. Save as backup.
    3: Put in mode 4 (virgin/new).
4: Read decrypted .bin. Write down SKC, using same method as above. For this example, we will use 02222.
5: Convert current mileage to km, enter it into the box in the lower right. Using the RB4 drop down menu, click Set Kilometers. Mileage is now set. If you are using km, obviously no conversion is needed.
6: Put back into mode 6. (Note: I first tried using virgin mode to adapt, but wasn't clear on the rest of the process and messed up. You can adapt using VCDS if you have both SKC's anyways)
7: Exit Vag EEPROM Programmer. Open VCDS. Ross Tech has an instruction and video on how to do this as well. This is just summarized from them.

8: Login to instruments using new cluster SKC (02222). Cluster is not adapted yet and still uses its own SKC.

9: Go to adapt. Read channel 50. Value should be 32000. In the test box, enter original SKC (01111). Click test, then save. Close controller, remove key from ignition for 1 min.

10: Turn key back on. Check IMMO ID of cluster and ECU. Both should match now. You will also see the new cluster's VIN to the right of the IMMO ID. If not, figure out where you went wrong.
***If you mess up bad enough to brick the cluster, simply put it back in mode 6 and write your new cluster encrypted backup .bin to it. Start over at step 1.***

11: Login to instruments using original SKC (01111). This will work now because the new cluster's SKC has been changed to the original SKC.

12: Follow Ross Tech's instructions to reprogram keys (see below). Check instrument soft coding to make sure it is correct for your car.

    13. Start car. My traction control and seatbelt lights were on, but turned off after a min. You may also have to enter the radio code to get it out of safe mode. Boom, enjoy!

    Immobilizer III Key Matching (Cluster)
This procedure details how to match new keys to VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda vehicles with with Immobilizer III, where the immobilizer control module is integrated in the instrument cluster. See the seperate instructions for models where the immobilizer control module is integrated in a separate immo box or where the immobilizer control module is integrated in kessy (Keyless Entry and Start SYstem).

You will need to download vag eeprom programmer and put your vcds cable in "dumb" mode or a blue ebay "fidi" cable. Then extract the skc by puttin your ecu in "virgin" mode. The skc is a 4 digit code under login in the photo below

Adapting ECU (to match your cluster, or vice versa) matches the IMMO ID so that both the ECU and cluster match and are happy. Turning off IMMO should negate this however doing that is a little bit more involved (requires ECU bootmode).

VAG EEPROM Programmer is for reading the cluster and is finicky. If you are just dealing with ECUs I wouldn't touch the cluster. It is simpler to extract the SKCs from your two ECUs and make them match (assuming at least one of your ECUs matches the cluster already). Once you have the SKC FROM BOTH ECUs you can use VCDS to adapt your new ECU to match your clusters IMMO ID. Ross Tech has write ups on how to adapt them as well as YouTube vids.

Both programs you can find for free however there are a bunch of crap versions of each one online that don't work. VAG K+CAN Commander V2.5 is what you want.

Cluster and ECM are original and should match. I know the cluster has the correct vin stored in the extra field. Is there a spot to check this in the ECM as well? Does the vin get stored in the ECM or does it just marry the cluster by the same skc? I just want to program a second ECM to the car that I'm going to have some new software installed onto. Will logging into my current ECM with the APR tune affect the software on it? Or would anyone else be able to use it on another car if I decide to sell it? That's basically why I'm doing it. I'd hate to write over the tune if someone else can use it in the future. Thanks for all your help, this was exactly what I was trying to find out. Just need to get the skc and then should be able to get this done.

I dont why acdc is tryin to sell vag commander so hard lol. Vag eeprom progammer got my skc no prob.
When u adapt it does carry the vin info over. It does not effect the tune .
I m running 2 ecus one stock one tuned. I swapped them when i had to get one bench flashed. Once your ecu is adapted tge cluster doesnt know the difference.

Because a newbie messing with the cluster is a bone head idea. You can easily brick the cluster and be stranded...Especially if a backup wasn't taken. I am just trying to suggest the most fool proof option aside from having someone else do it.

edit: and working with vag eeprom programmer is balls. You have to try connecting 30 times for it to do each step... at least that has been my experience with it.

I think I found a copy of VAG Commander 2.5 and this seems to be the simpler way to go. I definitely don't want to damage anything as I don't have any experience with this. Thanks for everyone's help so far. Great group here. Hopefully this will be a great resource for someone in the future as well. Going to attempt to pull the SKC code when I get some time later this week or weekend.

Don't use Commander on the cluster though. If you're going to adapt the cluster end of things use EPROM programmer or you might brick it

Maybe Commander is OK for ECU

Yup... Vag EEPROM Programmer and steps listed above will get you your SKC from your cluster.

You will throw a bunch of communications codes that you will need to clear with Vag cam...And your emissions rediness will reset...Just drive it for a bit to fix this.

Going to attempt to pull the SKC code when I get some time later this week or weekend.
So it seems like the software is opening fine, but not communicating and timing out. I found some youtube videos and going to try again. Do I need to be on channel 01 (motor) to rear the ECU? I tried w/ the default 07 Kombi.

What software are you using? Vag Commander or Vag EEPROM?

I'm using vag commander, as it was recommended to be the safer route. I believe I just had the wrong channel selected. Going to give it a whirl this evening and hopefully get it figured out. Thanks for sending me the eeprom files, just feel more comfortable using vag commander as it seems to be the one I've been recommended to use by a few individuals now.

kombi is cluster (Kombinationsinstrument - instrument cluster). So that's not going to be the ECU...

Yes, I'm sure its something simple I'm missing. Just need to figure out the correct order of steps.

If you re read this thread...I think you will find that Vag EEPROM is the safer route;)

    Definitely not safer.

With the cluster you need to read and write to it (decrypt flash, extract, encrypt flash). There is a chance for things to go wrong.

If you go the ecu route you are simply reading the eeprom. You don't write to it. Nothing to go wrong....

But yes both can be used to pull the SKC.

You are partially correct. No need to write to eeprom to get the skc.Simply put in new mode save decrypted bin with skc and you have your skc, reset to adapted mode and thats it.

Tried again this evening and still not communicating. I have a few questions:

    1. Does the key have to be on similar to using vag-com?

    2. I'm using a Hex+can USB rosstech cable, does VCDS need to be running(open), or do I just go straight to vag commander?

    3. Tried channel 01 Motor, k line from drop down me7 01 on top menu and no communication after 3 tries.

    4. Immo defeat is sounding good right about now :( I don't want to mess something up. I'm a hands on, mechanical guy, this stuff is too techy for me I guess.

Yes. However changing, keyword changing, between new mode and adapted mode is CHANGING things. ie more risk vs just reading. Maybe negligible but do you really want to risk it without a backup cluster? I did it on mine without issues...I have 3 spare clusters so I wasn't worried.

    1. Yes key on the ON position but engine off.
    2. Don't need VCDS open. Make sure you have virtual com port drivers installed. If you look in control panel the cable should show up twice. Once under COM ports (this is the virtual part) and once under USB controllers.
    3. Try wake-up 11 from the dropdown. Wakeup 1 didn't work for me.

Follow the DIY by Imnuts for how to do this.

    Here is what I did:
Vag-K+CAN Commander 2.5, set to K-line, go into ECU, set to ME7.1.1 Wakeup 11 (wakeup 1 wouldn't work with A6 ECU). Read. Leave default range. Bits 32 & 33 are the SKC. Reverse them and put into a hex to decimal converter for the value. ie. put bit 33 bit 32 into hex 2 dec converter. Output is SKC. Adding leading zeros to make this 5 digits total. ex 1234 = 01234 or 123 = 00123

I need to re-read that. Was very informative. I have two spare ecm's and will just send one to Motoza to turn the immo off if I can't figure this out. Really not bad for $50 and a piece of mind. I could then send them my original ecm and my other spare to have cloned w/ immo active. If I screw something up, it will be cost me more in the end and be a huge inconvenience.

Do any of you guys have a link to download vag commander and vag eeprom? I'm having trouble finding a good download
