yet another warning about a remote starter installation from best buy

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
before completing much necessary research on the subject, I made an impulse decision and decided to purchase a remote start from a local best buy. The installer seemed confident and said, "sure, it's no problem. should only take an hour or so but it would be best if you just drop the car off the night before"

I dropped the car off the night before. I didn't receive a call from him until 6 the next evening telling me it's ready. I go in, sign the paper work and grab the car. I instantly notice the dash is lit up like a christmas tree with cel's I had never seen before; ABS, ECS, air ride malfunction, AWD, brake light switch. Against my better judgement I drove the car home. Once home, I thought that maybe I could clear the codes with vcds since because maybe he did not pull the battery cable before the install and the codes were a result of this. No such luck. So I called back, made my concerns apparent, they said to bring the car back in. Dropped it off again, for another night. I met with the manager who I told I did not want anything done other than the system returned to the way it was before the install, and a full refund. If the codes were still active when I returned I would drive the car straight to the dealership. The codes were actually resolved, but I brought vcds with me this time and scanned it in the parking lot. Nothing in the dash, but the same communication cel's were still stored. I'm hoping they were simply stored from before.

I've since found a post on here about remote starters and decided to make an appointment next weekend to have abt near o'hare do the install. Hopefully it turns out better this time.

I'm thinking all of the issues resulted from either a poor connection he made or the module he used just interfered with communication between the in-car modules. I can tell you, however, all the modules are intricately dependent upon each other. If one is not working, or will otherwise not communicate, half the car stops working properly. It messed with the idle in drive at a standstill, shifting, the suspension felt like it was completely out of air (like driving a car with no shocks), it said the sport differential was disabled, among other issues. Amazing how one little install like that could make such a huge impact.

Moral of the story; I highly encourage you NOT to take your car (at least this one) to Best Buy for any auto installation. I'd have been better off doing it myself.

I hope you get it worked out! Its well known that Best Buy literally has ZERO requirements for their techs. Their service is a huge joke! Never ever let Best Buy touch your car for any reason!

I would like to hear more if anyone has been successfully able to install a remote start. One thing I used to like in my previous car, especially in the cold northeast.

The C7/C7.5 are pretty simple to install remote start. Cost me about $350 for the viper system installed at my local dealer. Ain't had any issues with it either. They always do a great job. I know our local Best Buy installer and he's a good guy. Seems to know his stuff but the company I buy all my home AV stuff from has never let me down so I use them for this stuff.

I've also had the viper smart start system installed on the S4 for about 2 years without any issues. A proper installer will wire the small valet key in the system to make it work with the advanced key system.

ABT will get you fixed up. They've done work on a few of my cars and they do a lot of high end work. But for an Audi - I was going to get it done on my wife's Q5 but they needed to use the 2nd fob we have as part of the installation. Meaning we would only have the one fob for the life of the car. This is to get the smartphone remote start capability. Your car may be different but you may need to pop for a new remote fob from the dealer - about $300 extra. Call them first. Maybe it's only the brands they carry have this requirement.

There are brands out there that don't require the use of a spare key.

I hope not, I don't want to spend another 300 on top of the 350 for the installation. Also, I wanted it as simple as possible with the use of no extra fobs, apps, gps, etc...just push the lock button three times from inside the house and start the car. The best buy guy did it with the valet key. I'm hoping ABT will be able to do the same but this time not disable half the function of the car. Something to note; even though he messed up half the car, the remote start did actually work:) This is the goal: http://www.abt.com/product/88327/Dir...-3LS-4X10.html

I used to live in Chicago. ABT is amazing. On the day I had my lowly BMW in for a completely custom rebuild of my stereo, they had 2 ferarris and 1 Bently in the bay. I honestly felt like they took care of my care like they did all the others and would go back there in a heartbeat. Amazing experience!

Best Buy- I would not let them install peanut butter on wonder bread. I have a couple stories myself but no point in sharing.

I lived in Chicago as well and can say ABT is badass. I loved going to their old store and now love it even more going to the new one. Besides that Pita Inn is close by!!!!

    Anyone from Skompton?

Yeah Bestbuy is a definite no go for this on a car with electronics like an Audi. I would take my grandfathers Toyota Corolla in there and not give a crap.

My grandfathers, if still alive, would get the ABT treatment. Perhaps my worst enemy would get the Best Buy Nod and a package of skittles.

yet another warning about a remote starter installation from best buy

I did some research and located the master tech in my city for Best Buy. Spoke with him on the details and felt very confident he had successfully done them in the past. The result was a flawless install for $540.

Works with my the phone app and my stock remote. The small plastic key was used for the immobilizer module behind the dash.
