    Generic ebay ignition coils

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys so I found a set of four ignition coils on eBay for $67 and thought well what the hell. Got them yesterday installed them and bosch platinum spark plugs gapped to.031 and tried to start the car, fired up, rpms went up to about 1200 (as it was cold) and then died. Got engine codes right away for cylinder misfire. Took the new ignition coils out and swapped them with the existing ones I already had and the car fired up without an issue. Mind you I got codes for each cylinder. So I guess my question is, are the generic ignition coils all like that? Are our cars this picky? They look almost identical, they specified they were for the 2.0t. What gives? Is there any adjustments I can make to them or am I screwed out of $67?

One thing i have learned about Audi is what ever you buy make sure is oem or if not oem a supplier that is known to make oe specifications. Ecs tunning, jhm motorsports, europaparts stuff like that.

Probably a good idea to change out the plugs at the same time if you're going to do all 4 ignition coils. There's a difference in resistance between a new plug verses one that's been well used. Enough to prematurely cause a brand new coil to fail. I went through 2 sets of Audi OEM coils within a year of eachother before finally saying screw it and getting a set of Duralast coils as the 3rd set for $85.00 when the 2nd set failed and left me stranded. At that time, I had also replaced the plugs with the suggested bosch platinums. My mileage improved by 2-3 mpg and the car has never run better.

Sure Duralast coils are far from OEM, but they're have a limited lifetime warranty. If one fails, take it back to any Autozone for a replacement.

I did replace the spark plugs when I replaced the ignition coils

I've gotten some great stuff cheap off eBay, an actual name brand timing belt kit for $50 less than anywhere else, some decent generic headlight bulbs, and a new armrest... otherwise, don't buy mechanical/electrical generic crap, that's for sure. At least research the aftermarket brands to see what's acceptable to the community as known decent quality. JHM, ECS, EuropaParts, etc. all have good deals on known decent quality aftermarket parts. $48 DV, $29 thermostat, $170 auto trans service kit, etc...There is no reason to go too cheap on total generic crap and coils are one thing you REALLY shouldn't go cheap on.

Why would you be screwed out of $67? I'm seeing those in the price range have a lifetime warranty... Even the $35 set on there has a one year warranty... Just tell them you want a full refund or you will dispute with eBay.

FYI, the AutoZone "Duralast" are actually Eldor brand, good to know!

    OEM coils or bust.

Also, considering OEM ones can be found online for $80, you saved, what, $10 and got worthless coils? I'll never understand that mentality...

Fowler VW is the Amazon seller where I bought my Black Top coils from years ago. They were genuine and haven't had a single hiccup in 3-5 years.

Yup. Those warranties are worthless too. I'd rather pay a teensy bit more for a reliable part without a warranty, then have a lifetime warranty and be swapping them out every 6 months and having to deal with the unreliability and downtime.

Picture this... you're cruising down the highway with Mila Kunis in your passenger seat. Windows open... fresh air filling your cabin. All of a sudden your car starts jerking and you get a cel... fcuk, its a misfire. Mila looks over at you and is in disbelief that your German engineered automobile is shaking like a salt shaker. Now you have to explain that it's just a coil pack, just a coil pack with no name... but a lifetime warranty. Mila replies... "should have shopped at europaparts" ... fin.

tl;dr - If you ever get lucky enough to take Mila Kunis on a date, make sure your coil packs are from europaparts.

Its probably a "replace with like part" warranty, not a "Full refund" warranty...
If OEM was that good they would cost more and be more reliable. But with these he didn't even take the time to shop around and bought a six pack of them for $68 when there are Eldor, which I believe ARE OEM for $80 a set. Anyway, warranty actually didn't matter, it didn't work right from the start so he had buyer protection. Some things are worth going cheap on, I got an armrest lid for $16 when even the aftermarket at ECS is $60 and my cheapie is very good!

You bought the six pack, thinking you could use a couple of spares when you should have just for the 4 for $35 if you really just wanted to go cheap and I bet they probably work better...lol.. Anyway, use eBay buyer protection against them if you have to. Screw them for selling you garbage.

You make fun of the lifetime warranty on Eldor? Maybe you should read a little better before getting your hand at comedy when it didn't make sense, many of you suppliers sell Eldor as a reliable part.

So you also didn't notice that the "Duralast" are actually Eldor, which are OEM... I think you are just dumb if you think that's a bad deal to pay $85 for Eldor and be able to exchange for life at AutoZone.. But no one, including the person who posted that even noticed that they pretty much ARE OEM! hehe..

What do you mean far from OEM? They are made by Eldor, which I'm pretty sure IS OEM... Just have an extra old working one on hand if you need to run down to the store and exchange it, very smart actually!

But no one, including the person who posted that even noticed that they pretty much ARE OEM! hehe..

I''m taking about the description right on the web site that I posted earlier. But that is good feedback as well, unless they were different ones or something...

I couldn't find any packs of 4 for $67, only saw the six pack, can you PM be the link till them? Anyway, eBay/PayPal has buyer protection and sellers HATE when you use it so be sure to threaten to report them if they won't refund you as long as you send it back. You will be out five bucks for shipping at most, you have a 100% money guarantee, I'm not sure why toy think you are out the money, the policy is well known and clear. It's almost like you're working for the OEM suppliers trying to stop us from buying on eBay! lol... Anyway, dude, click through your options on eBay, use the messaging feature, click the button to report a problem, it's all very easy.

All it says is that it's designed to meet or exceed OEM spec, not that it's OEM (unless I'm missing something). There are horrible cheap spark plugs out there that claim to do the same, but won't perform as well or last as long as a quality plug. In my opinion this situation with coils is no different.

Not sure why you're fighting this so hard tbh.
If folks want to buy non-OEM, they're going to do it and then start threads like this. I prefer OEM when it comes to items like this, as do many others, and I have had long term success to back it.

Sure, an armrest that's non OEM is one thing, but parts that are crucial to your car's life are something else. That's my .02

This. Dan, you're literally the only person I've ever seen defending aftermarket coil packs. Frankly I don't care who "manufactures" them, the the price difference is so small, and OEM foils are pretty damn well proven, why even take the chance?

Besides just because the same company made them, doesn't mean it went through the rigiorous QC that an OEM stamped one would. I mean it's possible it's exactly the same, but it's more likely it's not.

Ugh, it says right in the bottom section, is everyone so blind and stupid? I don't know why all of you parts snobs have their noses so high in the air about where people buy their parts from. I give up... I prove that the part IS OEM and it's still not good enough for you people.

All I'm saying it's the same price as OEM because it IS OEM, but if you have an AutoZone nearby it's super convenient to use the lifetime warranty if you need to. I'm defending SANITY, here, but go ahead and throw your money at the same ones without the warranty and then question why I'm making sense? Z WTF

Just because it says OEM spec doesn't mean it is. Especially from CHina. How are you going to confirm this?

Eldor is not aftermarket, it is one of the actual OEM that Audi used at the factory, am I the only one who knows this?
