    New FSI coil pack revision? 07K905715G

    Anyone have any experience with the latest revision "G" FSI coil packs? One of my 06H905115B coils popped this week so I called the dealer to get a set of 07K905715F's and all they have is the G's now. They're selling them for $33 a pop. Cheapest I could find online was here.

    Just yesterday a 06H90511A coil pack of mine blew (which was an old used spare that replaced a blown 06H905115B). I had one more spare 06H905115A that went in so now I have no more spare 2.0T coil packs!! Kinda scary knowing that the remaining ones are ticking time-bombs...

    From some semi-quick searching I concluded 07K905715F was the way to go. I found a seller on Amazon selling Genuine ones for $23, free shipping, and placed the order yesterday.

    Anyways, kinda sucks to learn that 07K905715G is now the latest; though I don't feel so bad since they are $15/ea higher cost.

    I just ordered them through audiusaparts.com. With shipping they came out to $27 a piece. A bit better than the dealer at least!

    Guys, dont buy coil packs ever again!

    Buy them at autozone or the like with a lifetime warranty.

    Buy 2. Keep the spare in the truck with the receipt in the box, swap it out when it dies, exchange the bad one.

    Been doing this with fsi packs for about a year. Gone through 2.

    I tried Duralast coils once. 2 weeks later 2 of 'em had crapped out already. That's when I swapped to the FSI coils. My current set lasted me almost 4 years.

    Coil packs were a big issue for the first few years with the B6. There were numerous revisions that kept on blowing. I think Audi/VW finally got it right around 2009 with the revision D. Clicky click® I'm still running those same ones from 2009 with no issues whatsoever.

    I have been curious to see if the FSI coils make any difference but I just haven't gotten around to trying them. It's kinda hard to justify replacing my current coils since they don't seem to be giving me any issues whatsoever.

    Doubtful that the coils sold at AutoZone are genuine Audi parts, and they likely have questionable quality. In any case, I'd spend a few $ extra to get known quality parts and avoid the hassle of having to go back to the store all the time. There have been very few reported issues with the last revision, though they still happen occasionally on the 1.8T.

    Actually I had a coil crap out on me a few months ago and went to AutoZone to get one. It looked the same as OEM, and even had the same part number on it. Only thing to differentiate it from stock was big D sticker on the top for Duralast.

    So they may actually be legit OEM coils...

    gtrs @26lbs daily. Driven hard. Bosch F5DPOR plugs.

    I guess its a hassle if the store is a ride. But im 2 min from everything and anything, so its super easy.

    2 in one year is about normal for coilpacks in my experience. And they were both in my cylinder that was leaking coolant (#2), so maybe that had something to do with it.

    They do not miss under load, thats all I care about.

    I've got D revision coils in there right now (they're my spare set that I keep in the trunk) while I wait for my new G revision FSI coils to arrive. Now that I finally have my car sorted out I'm interested to see how long I get out of these coils paired with the proper DWELL tables.

    1 genuine Audi coil blown in 4 years (on a not so great tune and dying K03 until just recently). That's what is keeping me coming back! I DO like my Duralast Platinum battery though, it's held up great for the past 5 years.

    Another ignition coil thread!?!? R8 ones have been doing me justice for a while, along with others. Blew so many 1.8T revisions, including the Hitachi bolt downs (lasted the longest btw, but grants less voltage for the plug...so the internet says). Blew the FSI coils too, and R8 coils have proven strong so far. This on a bigger turbo app with F5DTC plugs on a custom 25psi 93 tune for now via Maestro Suite. Reused old 1.8t boots with no adapters for years. Can be sourced for like $80+shipping. Grab an extra 2, and keep them in your trunk (what I do).

    More info for anybody wanting to diagnose their wiring, because heat can def damage connections over time. You have 4 wires on the connector.

    1) 12v (check for voltage drop)
    2) Ground for that 12v (check continuity from ground to ground)
    3) 5v signal that tells the ignition coil to grant voltage to the plug (accepted or not, running wrong plug or plug not tuned for can burn out ignition coils fast. blew like 3 FSI coils when I switched to F6DTC plugs 2 winters ago. didn't hit me that they didn't start blowing till I swapped to a different plug. swapped back to F5DTC and haven't blown one since. custom tuned on F5DTC plugs, and validated reason to me and not ever going to spend the money to test it out or reason why. conjecture is colder plug during tuning is what coil was used to, and the F6DTC plug made the coil get too hot and basically just burn out. dwell settings never messed with in tune yet)

    But while we are here, let me get this off my chest. Bugs me all the time but I say nothing about it. One ignition coil is not a coil pack. A pack of 4 ignition coils makes it a pack of ignition coils. Hence, coil pack. If it is one individual unit it is called an ignition coil.

    Similar to how those round things attached to tires can be called rims. Technically the rim is part of the wheel, like the barrel and spokes of a wheel. I think people get upset over the wrong reasons. Mine is the technical term that gets applied...while I would conjecture many think "rims" is a slang. It is...but isn't. But terminology used improperly.

    This seems to be just the difference between a fresh vs tired ignition coil. The only person I know of to actually test FSI coils against the 1.8T coils is Gulfstream on Vortex...

    I'm running some post-recall (still old) 3L red coilpacks, not sure how well they work. All I know is there isn't a flashing CEL.

    Wonder if I would notice a difference with these. Who doesn't like new things?
    However, that is a pretty penny. Would suck to burn a hole in my wallet for no reason, if I end up unable to feel a difference in engine running quality.
    It's not the smoothest now, but the mounts are bad for one.

    Or maybe they will cycle themselves out over time as spares? Seems people keep some in the trunk and at home, to swap in when one blows, eventually depleting the supply over years.
    And it's not many, only four, as opposed to a V8.

    I wonder if this idea applies, because OG says they fixed it in '09.

    However, someone told me that if you modify the car/upgrade from stock, such as Stage 1+ APR, TT 225 386cc injectors, etc. that it's good to go one heat range cooler spark plugs, and upgrade to some other coils that produce a bigger spark? R8 coils? Not sure what it's called, or if this claim is even valid/true.
    I think I have some NGK Iridium IX plugs or something, not the Bosch Platinum. They seemed pre-gapped to spec.

    Autozone - I know with some things, like NAPA, you can get a Mann filter in a different brand box, not sure if that applies to coilpacks.

    Also, my coil harness is stale, dried-up/crispy.

    Not to hijack but is Stage 1+ not enough then? I think it wasn't for OG, so he went with a dialed-back FrankenTurbo mixed-flow (stock internals), and a different member the other day posted even that (IIRC) was not enough for him. Someone else told me these cars belong at Stage 1+ at least, to wake it up. I think Charles says that as well. I think Matt is trying to fit a new turbo. MikTip has K04. And Murky wants a 2.7T swap. And Bische has VR6 3.2L T.

    Is this just something you try, and if you don't like it, take a little hit selling off whatever the parts were?
    I think I heard the quotes "Do it right or don't do it at all", "Get it right the first time", etc. too many times.
    Maybe I can't go wrong, since the engine can still handle it?

    I think I belong in 'questions you thought were too dumb to ask' and reading/listening/researching instead of posting...

    Seerlah, using "rims" just seems like another level of poor terminology. But I'll try my best not to desecrate the words pack, coil, or ignition from now on! Also, I made this thread to ask about the latest G revision FSI coil. So at least is was a new topic regarding coils!

    All_Euro, I swapped to the FSI coil because it smoothed out my cold weather idle (I had new rev D 1.8t coils to compare to), I was able to run a larger gap (.044), and saw a noticeable increase in fuel economy.

    Spike,
    - The coils I bought from Autozone a few years back were physically different than my OEM ones. I think they use another manufacturer.
    - There are a few tables in the ECU that control coil charge time, that's what I was referring to with DWELL. Read more here.
    - Dentist drill, waste gate cracked/damaged/leaking (my boost onset was slow and never met requested)=dying turbo
    - You'll want to ditch the K03 eventually. I've loved my FT. Holding peak boost all the way to redline never ceases to put a smile on my face! It's the way the B6 should have come from the factory, IMO.
    - You just have to keep reading and decide what you want out of your car. You can see my mods in my signature. I wanted stock like daily driver characteristics while still being able to put a smile on my face. I already had experience with FT on my old B5 S4 so going with them on my B6 was a no-brainer. Just learn from others mistakes where ya can and let others know when you learn from your own!

    Spike, "Do it right or do it twice" is a phrase that can't really be applied to life, when it comes to things that are soon to come. For example, the EFR turbo. Back then doing it right was getting a T3 tubular manifold, HTA turbo (hottest thing on the market), stroking to 2.0L, and ironically getting the best OTS tune. Besides that, only real way people did it was with a standalone engine management system. And that was indeed doing it right. Does that apply today? Absolutely not. Hence, why I don't run an EFR right now. They were just released when I was doing my build and I wasn't about to be the guinea pig for something that cost $1,200 (if you don't know, this was price back then in case you ever want to compare inflation. these companies rape people when there are so many other ways. my turbo cost less than my old GT2871R for example, and caused me "zero" issues while my GT2871R blew 3 times before I just said f*ck Garrett and washed my hands). This paragraph was intended to disprove that statement as technology advances. Mind you, it was rhetoric and indeed existed with true validity for that statement. But that phrase no longer has a place in the car world.

    Now in relation to ignition coils. Same principal. Coil I use now, along with many others, is used on the R8. In other words, this coil didn't even exist back then. OP could very much be a lurker and could care less for all the coil updates, which I assume to be the case. Hence, my advice in my opening paragraph in my initial response post to this thread. So that phrase "do it right or do it twice" can def be applied here...but only for the time being. The R8 coil will be replaced with one better, and another better after that, etc. To the point and entire device for applying voltage to the spark plug can be invented, and we crazies find a way to retrofit it onto our aging cars (I'm crazy with you guys, so not letting go and upgrading cars is seen totally different by us. few understand, with the end result being very rewarding as you cruise in your passion. going from point A to point B is not the same...and I get it. you guys are not alone, plus I have a disdain for this tech. just more stuff to break in my eyes.). So, better advice IMO is to do what is the best out now...but at the best affordable route. And I mentioned that in form of advice in my initial response.

    I walk the same advice I give most times. If not, then route I would take or route I think to be better than route I took. I like being different, so road I walk more times than less is different than others. But the R8 upgrade reusing old boots is about the most cost efficient route with utilizing best OEM ignition coils on the market, because there are much better ones than OEM. But they come at a pretty coin tag. Pick up R8 coils, increase spark plug gap, create a more complete combustion (this is how you increase mpg with these), and join the club. Any electrical item is very susceptible to failure due to it simply being an electrical component. With that being said, if one is to go out it can be for many reasons. But it comes with the territory.
