    Did Ross-Tech Discontinue Hex-Can Cables?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I went to check out some of their programming guides and on the main page it looks' like the older cables are being replaced with a new one called "Hex-V2." Has anyone tried this one yet? Thoughts?

(Out of production -- no longer available)
    It certainly looks that way.

Yes they have discontinued the hex + can. The only way to get unlimited vin scanning is to go with the hex net pro for 600 bones. Better buy a used hex + can before the price sky rockets or contact any authorized distributors that may still have some stock.

wow, it looks like the VINs are limited. I wonder why they're limiting them to just 3 and 10.

Aren't there always at least a couple HEX + CAN for sale, including on VWvortex forum, such as from people who sold their VW and moved on to something else?
I think it was ~$400 new, and they'd list it for not much less, since it's a quality popular item that held its value.

Not sure if there's any way around this. Haven't some people used knockoff dongles, but then purchased $99 full software license, which lacks the new VIN-limit?

Or are you stuck with HEX-NET Pro $600? Because that's a lot more extra, just to switch from wired to wireless.
I don't knock the hustle though. Seems like they're a group of PhD's offering a nice cheaper alternative to genuine dealer diagnostic stuff. I'm not sure if that's ever needed. And I think it's a whole computer that rolls around on a cart, versus a portable little cable.

My impression is this new V2, is just that; a newer version 2 of HEX-CAN. Maybe they can tell you directly? It sure looks cooler.

Or maybe you can convince them to do you a favor, and unlock it? Or like f1torrents said, buy that feature?

I mean I guess it makes sense, they have to make money to survive, and this sort of splits up users into two groups: Shops who scan a ton of cars, and individual consumers who only do a few, such as personal cars.
Or when my neighbor with a Jetta asks for a scan, do I tell them to buzz off and buy their own? Probably not, since I have unlimited scan HEX-CAN, which I hope they won't disable in a future software update or something.

The hex can software is already discontinued.
    No support after 2014 cars.
Can't do any work on 2015 or above.
It's all listed on Ross techs page

If you already have a cable you can upgrade to the pro for 399 which is 200 less then new and also adds wireless capabilities. I'm thinking about doing that.

That's not correct. From the link in the second post, which I'll repeat.

    http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/old-interfaces/huc.php

    Compatibility:

This interface works with all diagnostic-capable VW, Audi, Seat, and Skoda models from 1990 through 2015.
It does NOT fully support the following vehicles:
    2016+ Audi Q7 (Rest-of-World) Chassis 4M (2017+ North American Region chassis F7)
    2016+ Audi A4 B9 (Rest-of-World) chassis 8W (2017+ North American Region chassis F4).

Here's a thread from the Ross-Tech forum announcing the new V2. Some good explanations in it of the differences.

This guy needs to stay on the s4 forum haha
Either way its a moot point for me. 2014+ audi is so financially out of reach for me unless the lottery gods smiles upon my poor self. I'll just keep my hourly waged ass in my ghetto fabulous 02!
Seriously, if you can afford a 2014+ audi then even a $600 cable/dongle should be a drop in the bucket for a baller like yourselves. Ross Tech is just trying to make some money. Cant hate on that for sho'

I have my pro on order.
My HEX CAN is for sale as it's pretty useless to me now.
Without updates it's only good for the old stuff.

I was trying to find out if the hex-can has the same hardware as the new v2. They claim the v2 is faster. I will dig some more into it tonight.

I like the new look and being that it's universal' as it replaces all the older models, but they should've made HEX-V2 with unlimited VINs. That's the only other feature I would change. Does anyone know if the limited VINs are permanent or could they be stored and then changed if needed?

You can upgrade the new cable to unlimited for 169 more

If you could store the vins then change that would be unlimited so I doubt thats the way it is. From reading the site they keep track of the vins. Ross Tech stated people with unlimited vin cables have had at the most 3 vins registered to them on average.

Technically I still own a B6, at least for a few more days.
I was just verifying that my current HEX-CAN is good for now.

Here is some info I just got back from Ross Tech

The V2 is based on the HEX-NET design. At the heart of both is the same 32 bit microcontroller.
Both the V2 and HEX-NET provide a substantial increase in speed on CAN based cars. On K Line cars, the speed is still limited by the control module and there is not much difference in performance.

The HEX+CAN unit you have is limited now in that it cannot communicate with all modules in 2016 cars and even fewer in 2017 cars. We had to respond to that need. If you do not at present have a 2016 or 2017, then there is no pressing to upgrade at this time.

The HEX+CAN and all previous generation products will at some point in the future not receive further support. That is, we likely will leave a legacy version of VCDS on our web site and those that choose to keep the older designs will be able to continue using them with the legacy software. To enjoy new things, users will have to upgrade. Time line on this is not set and has been stated to be at least 1 year away and likely longer.

The difference between the V2 and the HEX-NET is the WiFI and local onboard storage. The HEX-NET also includes VCDS-Mobile allowing the user to do diagnostics on any device that has WiFi and a web browser. This would include smart phones, Apple products, Android devices and so on.
