    Which K04 kit?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

I'm considering a turbo kit and tuning upgrade to the K04, but wondering which kit to get. APR has one with the stock K04 [1], JHM has one with their modified K04 [2], and does anyone else make a full kit worth considering? What are peoples' thoughts on the differences?

My main use for my B7 A4 is long road trips, secondary use is errands and daily driving. I won't be tracking it so don't need absolute power, more interested in a little more mid-high rpm boost for highway handling, reliability, and gas mileage.

    Thanks!

Just buy the JHM kit and be done with it. They make nothing but top quality parts and tuning. I'd bet their final tuning will create the fastest K04 B7s ever built, and it's bolt on.

I work in Fremont, if interested you come by around lunch and see how you like the JHM setup I have on my Avant with tip tranny.

Basically the same setup except instead of their K04-R turbo I have RAI's K0R-GT, but using JHM tuning.

I'd be interested in seeing this. I ran the S3 k04 from CTS. Tuning wasn't great. I bet if I had jhm tuning at the time I wud have saved $$$$

Ive only got experience with the APR KO4. Its basically the same as the S3 KO4-0064 Borg & Warner with machined in DV housing. These turbo's have been in service for a very long time in Europe. Parts are easily available and serviceable.

The JHM KO4-R is the new kid on the block. From @ their website is a modified KO4 with internals from . Parts manufacturer seemed to be . Dont know how serviceable parts will be a few years from now if it needs parts or servicing? Who exactly makes those modified parts. 's and sounds thru their website for thou. With an to date tune it would make their KO4 hardware preform better then the APR KO4-0064.

Me too, considering it's my old turbo and I know how it drove on my Maestro tune. I want to compare it with the JHM software.

Prob will wait until the production tune is released, boost comes on very slow now to protect rods.

Also might be a rolling to 60ish+, dont want to slam the tranny too much (although JHM has their supercharger on a S4 with a tip, which is the same and it has held up)

The car was going into limp mode at the end of the runs.
This was the basic boost profile I had on my Maestro tune. This was early in the tuning process, but it didn't change much. It just got smoother with more timing. The graph is in mbar, but the peak boost was 23 psi and it hit right around 20 psi at 3k.

Well...... I guess thats a good thing that Prime Motoring(JHM dealer) couldnt download the tune @ the time. I guess I waited over a year now to get it, I can wait a little longer to get the real KO4 tune to see whats it all about.

For full potential and likely more bottom end I think I wud highly suggest. If they're building "fastest" on stock bottom end I wud believe they are holding back pretty seriously. I found the tune on stock bottom end to be surprisingly snappy in james12lucy's avant. I cud imagine as when I built mine the k04 with rods was a very very very awesome daily ride.

Not really, I was the third owner of mine because the first two people couldn't get it to work properly. I discovered the WG actuator rod was binding and the WG wasn't opening. After fixing that, it worked great. All the other stuff I bought from RAI in that same timeframe was junk.

I do remember reading about that situation on that KOR you had bought. I wanted 1 of their 1st production RAI 3 inch DP with a Hi flo Cat. The later production 1,s would rub like yours did before you ed it

    Which K04 kit?

Ideally you want rods to get the most out of a k04. The s3/GolfR both have forged rods to cope with the extra strain of the quick spoiling k04-64.

Definitely not necessary if the tuner detunes the spool but you obviously lose some of the low rpm powah...

Personally I'd not fuck with a bottom end build unless I totally had to. A k04 with a tune designed specifically for a stock bottom end should be fine. Even though early k04 tuning had a having of snapping rods, nowadays people have a better grasp on FSI tuning. Only took a decade....

Suggest the JHM as APR as moved on from b7s. JHM will always by your side if you need any help installing it.

Completely get that fact that if I want ALL THE TORQUES NOW!!! I will have to build the bottom end, but like you said I dont want to build it unless I completely have to. Especially b/c my last compression test looked great 225,226,227,223. I will definitely wait until their production tune gets released to decide if getting the torque a little earlier will be worth the effort.

May look into water meth for pulling hard to RL though.

Hehe! Nice!! I guess I'll hold off on the K04...man...the transmission is a real slushbox compared to the new 8hp or even the DL501 Dual clutch.

Is actually usually snappier than it looks in the video, I never drive in D or S, always manual. I think it will learn the shift points better the more you drive in S mode.

You can also try to find someone who has done the JHM tip tune and see how their's shifts.

I saw the vid earlier bud - shifts look pretty snappy for sure.

How would you rate your K04 purchase? 1 to 10 where 10...it has transformed my car like when I tuned it with a Stage 1 tune and 1 being....well...it was totally not worth all this money - I should of stayed stage 1.

The 6hp tip will never hold a candle to the 8hp tip. It's not even close.

    Yea, it's gross.

Maybe I'm just biased because my old b7's torque converter was dying and the car shifted like ballsack, but I hated that 6-speed ZF. My wife's q5's 8-speed is smooth as butter and lightning quick in comparison. Though 1-2 shifts are sometimes a tad harsh when it's cold.

    But obviously 6mt > all

Nah. I prefer my manual in traffic.

The ONLY time I've ever regretted my manual was after a long day of skiing and sitting in stop and go for two hours. My legs were jello after skiing. I started getting cramps halfway home, haha. It wasn't my finest moment.

Oh yeah, my DSG in my GTI is insane. However the TCU tuning makes a YUGE difference.

Not yet, still a work in progress. We can do the tuning here though at JHM if anyone local wants to come by. If we haven't done your TCU yet we would just need to read it off first.

When I get the urge to . I jump into my MK1 GTI. Its like going back in a space warp. If you really want to see what shifting gears is about All linkage shifting assembly with relay levers and rods

Tough to say and will hold my final judgement until the production tune comes out. That being said, I pieced everything together used pretty much ($1500 for everything, turbo, fueling, turbo back exhaust w/valance) so you cant compare my $$s spent to a full new setup from JHM or APR.
