    2.0T loud "whining noise"

I have a 2008 A4 Quattro 2.0T. A while ago, I noticed a slight noise, sounded like a whining power steering pump, that got louder as the RPMs increased. Well it's been getting worse, so I took my serpentine belt off, and it's still making the noise. Sounds like it's in the valve train maybe. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have this on my B8 A4. Sound noticeable more when cold weather arrived. Through research people have suggested power steering pump, the sound isn't affected by turning the wheel at all and I have checked fluids. It is def rpm related as you go up and down, not experiencing any power loss from engine or battery.

Alternator could be an issue, but I am not experiencing any power loss or issues, are there any symptoms of an alternator going out? Or would it just go at once?

    Any advice would be great......

This was happening to me, turned out my passenger-side balance shaft gear walked itself off the shaft causing the chain to jump and ride the shaft (lol). Knocked a few teeth off too. Car sounded like it had a busted supercharger on it it was whining so bad.

Don't know how common this is, but I lived with it for a couple months until finally figuring it out after replacing the motor. There is a little cap on the front of the lower timing cover you should be able to pull off to check this without doing anything too invasive, if you can get down there. Will probably have to pull the nose and radiator off though. Definitely rule out an accessory/pulley issue by running the car with the serpentine belt off first. Which it looks like you did, but just wanted to say that for anyone else reading this thread with the same problem.

I had this same sound coming from my 08 A4 2.0T AT, thought it was power steering pump also. Had the sound for some time and was planning on changing it.
The car stalled out in slow traffic the other day and had to be towed. After a premlin' investigation my mechanic thinks the cam chain snapped. He thinks it may just be valves, I know I'm not that lucky so i'm LOOKING FOR A
REPLACEMENT MOTOR NOW now, any advice guys. Granted my first engine died from the oil pump taking a crap. This is the second engine to die on me. I luv the car but goodness, its making me think twice about
    my VW/AUDI life.
