I would have said Carista, and probably still would, but I have had nothing but issues lately. I am certain that Carista would say its because I'm not using their dongle, but I personally think otherwise with the iPhone. Apple limits apps to wifi connectivity though, so I guess you could maybe say there is blame on both sides. Just as an example, I needed to have my car inspected yesterday, but had forgotten that I disabled the amber corners in the headlights. It took at least 30-45 times of trying to connect to the car with my Amazon dongle (comes up as VLINK) for it to actually pull up the settings for the car. Maybe this would have been different with Carista's dongle, but it took a similar amount of attempts to disable them again afterward. I have found that for some reason, mine only seems to connect in airplane mode with the wifi on, but even then its a multiple attempt sort of endeavor. It was honestly very frustrating, because I keep the dongle in the car to read codes on the fly when I don't have my VAGCOM and a computer handy, but its hard to put faith in something that has so much trouble connecting to the car; it honestly really makes me wonder if I am negatively impacting my car in some way (but then I justify that's just me becoming paranoid IMO). Their support is generally pretty good on the other hand, but even then it can take some time to respond as they explore new platforms.

It does...and bake's point about limiting apps' connectivity to WiFi isn't true.

Do you both have android phones? iOS is limited to Wifi only. OP specifically said using iOS.

I don't know if its the best but I use a KIWI 3 and OBD Fusion on my iPhone. I like OBD Fusion because you can create custom PIDs.

As someone with the Carista adapter and app on an iPhone 7 Plus, hotleadsingergu's answer is correct. The Carista app will connect via Bluetooth to the Carista adapter.

    And here's proof:

I didn't say Carista uses Bluetooth, I said the explanation isn't correct. Apple doesn't limit iOS devices from connecting to other devices via Bluetooth in apps...I've developed apps for iOS that utilize Bluetooth to its full extent. Imagine all of the pay apps/structures that wouldn't work if that were true (Paypal, Square, etc...), or the number of FM Transmitters that wouldn't work, or the number of Bluetooth Thermometers, etc... Apple doesn't limit it at all, the developer just never figured out how to make it work correctly, so it's shoddy. It works with most transmitters, but not all.

OBDEleven's newest generation is compatible with iOS and I will be ordering one eventually. They are currently out of stock for who knows how long. Might have to settle for the earlier Android only version, we'll see. But OBDEleven has the same functionality as VAG-COM, which is why I was looking at it.
