    Rally lights on B8?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi there!

I saw this photo pop up on instagram and wondered if there was a ready made mount to get a couple of auxiliary lights set up on my allroad or if anyone knew where these actually mounted! Seems like it would be a great addition when driving at night (in rural areas, of course)

    Thanks!!

IMO, if you have your heart set on it, I wouldn't go with lights as big as those... Smaller lights could look cool, though.

Rather than rally lights, why not mount a light bar someplace? Could offer as much or more light output and a sleeker look.

Thanks for all the replies... yeah definitely not going for something as big. The size I had in mind was about half of what was posted.

For me, I think these look better than lightbars, but that is just my opinion!

i like the thought of light bars if used at really dark roads --- as necessary
but that shit is obnoxious if youre just trying to look #dope #vapelife #lowlife

i like what that guy did mounting the bar on his roof rack for a stealth look.

Lights like this are pretty common in Sweden, there used for the extended night time.

Very common here, also putting LED light bars behind the grill. We have about four hours of good light a day at the moment (stockholm)

Yeah, I wonder if I could just stick the bar behind the grill. Anyone know of any good mounting spots? I may have to poke around there!

I'm primarily looking to use this on country back roads at night. Not that the stock lights are terrible, but I would love the extra light.

More than anything I'd just love to see more pictures of the mounts and see if I could get something similar made.

    Thanks!

Tag motorsports had an Allroad with a light bar behind the grill. Presumably mounted to the top of the crash bar. I thought it looked alright and contemplated putting one on mine.

    *Edit*
Mounted under the crash bar it seems. I'm sure this photo is edited more than a little.

Wow. That does look quite well executed in this photo. Just searched their site and this photo didn't come up. I might have to reach out to TAG and see how they did that. I don't recognize the allroad, is it someone on here?

There is no doubt a lot of editing to the photo, but make no mistake: those Rigid LED bars are BRIGHT. I had the 20" SR mounted in the bumper of my silverado and the light would light up the road for almost 1/4 mile (if you think I'm kidding, look at their website). They even make a black version now, which should be almost invisible behind the grille: http://www.rigidindustries.com/led-lighting/92021blk

Very cool! Will need to look into this further. I'm assuming there's a place I can tap into for them to come on with the hi beams? Sounds easy enough, right? Haha

Rally lights look out of place on our cars. Def go with some LED pods in the bumper/grille area.

I thought about adding in a lightbar for more light on my car.

You won't want to wire it directly to the highbeams because of the mass power draw. Wire in a relay or some other type of switch.

As long as it is thin, bottom of the crash bar is a good spot.

If it is not you may run into issues with the FMIC.

Oh, and I would pull the crash bar off the car to mount it.

If not you may run into issues hitting the line for the headlight washers. (The A4s have those too right?)

You don't need a full light bar. Trust me. Run two pods in your grille that won't block airflow and you'll be solid. A good kit will come with a wiring harness and relay. Hook up an aux switch for the lights separate from your headlights.

Bright is an understatement. That LED bar was blinding even in peak daylight. More like driving with the hand of God in your grill.

Here's one of the guys who mounted the light bar to the roof rack. Sent the screen shot to show you the size in the comments after I asked him.

I'm in the same boat sort of. Can't decide whether I want the light bar on my whispbars or my grille. I like the look of both, but if it's behind the grille, you won't have to worry about disconnecting the wires as you would on the roof rack.

What if you mounted it on top of the crash bar just under the four rings? Looks like it might fit there and not block the FMIC. May need spacers or different mounting brackets to get the height correct.

You'd have to run a pretty thin bar if you wanted it on top and under the rings.

If you have the mesh grille you could also mount it in front of the crash bar.

    My car for spacial reference

On the whispbar looks pretty damn good though!

I'm tempted now to buy one of these things this weekend. I'm just a little worried about the mounting. The front crashbar on the on the B8.5 isn't flat on top. As you can see in the picture in the above post.

The other issue for me is switch placement. I don't want some cheap looking toggle switch mounted in the car.

Under the crash bar is going to be a much better spot to mount it.

That's why I recommended putting the switch in the ashtray compartment, similar to what a member or two have done on here for their Bilstein B16 ride control switches. You could put a nice flat plate so it looks great when the ashtray door is open, but it's still in a place that can easily be hidden from view entirely.

Go to Home Depot get some 1/4 by 1 inch flat stock. Drill a hole through one end and hole in the top of crash bar. Few bolts and you'll have a very sturdy mount and it's thin enough to rest on the slats in your grille. If you need it braces toss a piece in a vise and bend away.

Let me tell how much I loathe those led bars on top of vehicles. Nobody understands how to aim them come up on my left side and I can't see shit. Is it really a good idea to make yourself not seen as you're trying to pass 70 feet of truck and trailer?

These are really cool ideas. I think I will play around with this once I have some time.

More than anything I want a clean install so that it doesn't look all hacked up. Is there a place in the firewall where I could run the wires through? I agree with the point about not having some universal toggle switch to turn the lights on/off

Good call on mounting it to the lower part of the crash bar (definitely not taking that off, ever).

    Thank you!!

Good call on mounting it to the lower part of the crash bar (definitely not taking that off, ever).

    Thank you!!
Yes there are quite a few depending on where you want the switch to be.

On the S4s the best spot to run wires is directly under the ECU on the drivers side of the car under the scuttle plate.

Picked up a 21" light bar on the way home from work. I'm off for 2 weeks over Christmas. I'll have a go at at.

Its powered directly off the battery and uses a relay. I'm thinking maybe just switching it off the highbeam feed?

I'll take a look at the crash bar. Ideally I would like it above the bar. I feel like that is less likely to interfere with intercooler upgrades. But I also don't want to screw around too much with fabricating brackets. It may go on the bottom in the end.

There are factory rubber grommets that can be used to feed wires to the engine bay.
Just seal exits with silicone and cover wires with a sheath to match factory.

Was able to spend some time over the last couple days trying to get this thing mounted. The crash bar on the B8.5s is a pain. Drilling through it wasn't going to work, it's just not a flat enough surface. Had to fab up some brackets. They're looking pretty crude at the moment. Once I'm happy with the way the bar sits I'll clean them up and paint them. As it sits in the pictures it fits behind the bumper and looks good.
