MPG low on my new to me 2014 S5 3.0T

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just picked up my S5 2 weeks ago and I've been driving a pretty even mix of highway and city and I'm only seeing around 18 MPG combined. It may be because I get excited and go WOT some times, but I was still expecting higher.
What are others with this car experiencing for mileage?
    Thanks

It dipped back into the high 19's after this. This is with very little highway driving if any at all, and WOT every once in a while. This is also with a Stage 1 tune, which supposedly increases MPG slightly, but let's be honest, it just increases the want to drive harder.

I've been in my new to me 2015 S5 for about 2 months now. I fill up every week and the first couple weeks I was ~18, but since I've been consistently at 22. I don't get much highway driving in, mostly 35-45mph back roads. Couple things I did right away, not sure if it made a difference or not was stayed on top of the tire pressure and I changed the oil from whatever the dealer I bought from (non Audi) had in it to Mobil 1.

The lower the MPG, the more appropriate you're driving it.

I've been using Mobil 1 in cars for a very long time, but my local Audi dealership advised against using it on the 3.0 TFSI, and instead advise Castrol.

Did you actually get 106 miles on that tank legit, or was it a partial fill? If it's legit, that's some proper hooning.

106 miles legit. 6 weeks of 100% short city traffic commutes.

Most of my commutes consist of city driving, but I still get 200-220 each fill-up, and I use the happyfuntime pedal pretty much any time I leave a light if no one is in front of me. I also don't generally let myself get below 1/4 tank. I tell you what though, it was pretty laughable to see what kind of mileage I was getting in my Tacoma when I spent 5 weeks straight driving it recently. I was getting 280+ per fill-up, because a happyfuntime pedal doesn't exist in that truck.

Not to stray away from this OP's thread, but did the Audi dealership give any reasoning?

No, other than that they have always had the best reliability results with Castrol oil in the 3.0 TFSI. The particular service advisor I go to is someone I've known for nearly 15 years and trust, so I figured I'd just go with what he says.

I used to drive my S5 on a 35 mile commute to work, and average 26-29 since I was trying to get the msot out of the fuel.. but now I'm stage 2, and I drive harder and the commute is shorter.. and i average 17-19 usually.

Also consider the cold weather.. more fuel to heat up initially and to run with all that dense air.

Also, depending on where you live there may be winter additives in the fuel that have a negative effect on fuel consumption. If you're in a climate that's known to dip into the negatives they tend to start putting in the additives in October/November.

i wouldn't shy away from using Mobil 1 .. notice our oil cap says Castrol on it? i'm pretty sure its an Audi/Castrol Agreement not really that the car performs better. I however have found its easier to find Castrol in that oil weight than Mobil 1. the one i saw said something about truck oil

I have gotten upper 20's on my last trip to Denver and back. Like 28-29 if I remember correct. Most the time I get roughly 18-22. On a crappy day leaving work though I can get a great 9mpg!

I've been 100% manual mode since I put my AWE exhaust on over a year ago. I usually get a combined 19 mpg between city and highway. Knew I wasn't buying a Prius and I'm fine with that.

Used to get 13-14mpg city from brand new 10miles to 5k miles. Somehow reached an inflection point after 5k miles and now getting 15-16mpg city as well. Snow tires let you drive like a jerk all year round :)

I don't really feel like doing the math right now, but i fill up about 10gals once a week (sometimes twice a week) and that covers roughly 140-220 miles depending on how I drive. The car has pretty much been on GIAC stage 1 since new and all maintenance was done at Audi as they threw in Audicare at time of purchase. I think the fuel economy on this car is great for what it is actually. mid to high teens mpg when spirited, and my all time best was 32 avg on a 440mi trip.

Well, that range doesn't predict driving conditions or driving styles, so you can never really expect is to be accurate. The MPG system is likely more accurate since it accounts for fuel used and the range already driven.

Lol. You're probably the type of person who believes the advertised mpg on a window sticker. The mpg displayed on my DIS is actually my default screen for the DIS. But obviously you've never experienced LA/OC traffic to know that your avg mpg can wildly change depending on when/where you would like to travel to around here.

My 2010 S5, 4.2 V8 mind you HUD tells me I get 24.0mpg at about 70mph on the highway on the way to work. Pshhhh..

I feel the miles till empty and the MPG on the hud don't match up even remotely close lol.

If I baby it around town it will say about 17.5, again yea right lol. Just ran to lowes and the grocery store and here's what it said averaging.

Actually, I don't ever look at MPG, so you're way off base stating that. If I cared about MPG I'd buy a hybrid, not performance based cars and 4x4s. Also, did you ever once see me make a claim that the car gets the MPG estimated on the window sticker? No, you simply saw me state that the calculations for average MPG are likely more accurate than the assumed range calculator. The MPG average uses data from actions that have already occurred instead of predictions, thus, it's more accurate.

Unless one commutes mostly at legal highway speeds with a very, very light foot, I'd never expect to see anything close to claimed EPA mileage.
If your vehicle is un-garaged in a cold winter climate, and your commute is short, expect even less.

Anything with forced induction will deliver poor fuel economy when accelerating instead of steady-state cruising. My stock 2.0T is no exception. Push the fun pedal and see the numbers drop.
I drive 70% city and see just over the city EPA rating most of the year, until winter arrives.
