Tire mount and balance at pep boys?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Has anyone had any experience with Pep boys for a mount and balance? It seems with the current promo's i can get 4 255/35/19 Continental DWS06 shipped and installed for $915. That's seems like a really good deal. These would be mounted on OEM A4 B8 S-line wheels, the RS4 style. 19x8.5

The only thing i'm worried about is them nicking or scratching my wheels.

No experience but take date and timestamped photos of each wheel in front of the staff.

Call and ask what kind of machine they use. If they have a no touch one you are all set.

Tire mount and balance at pep boys?

I wouldn't let my personal pep boys near me come within 10 feet on my car lol. But the one near me is horrible. Most are around me in PA.

I've taken my S5 to Sears to get inspected quickly as well as let them mount my stock 19" wheels to a set of tires last summer. Bunch of old techs there, no kids. However when I upgraded to 20" Vorsteiner wheels they didn't want to to do it nor would I want them to as they don't have a "full" touch less mount/balance. I doubt Pep Boys has a touch less mount.

I took mine to a mine to a wheel shop near me as Expensive for them to use that damn touch less machine. Pretty sure it was about $30 a tire at least. Keep in mind some wheel shops are picky. If they are aftermarket expensive wheels but you didn't buy them from them. They'll mount/balance them, but won't put them on the car. I went through this. Had to put my wheels on myself.

BTW I've had DSW06 tires on my S5 for about 3-4 months. Great tires, got a killer deal on mine from Sears. Did store pickup and brought them to the wheel shop near me. Personally I'd pick them up and
pay the extra for touch less. No way in hell I'd let pep boys mount my almost $3k wheels just over a extra $100. No deals via Sears right now?

No way in hell would I ever let them touch one of my vehicles once again.
A few years past I needed a complete brake job done on my truck so I took it to Pep Boys, I could not do it myself due to the fact that I was
working a lot of extra hours at work. The truck had disk brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear.
When I picked up my truck after work I paid the bill and asked if they had checked the brakes.
They said yes and that everything was working great.
I drove the truck for about 2 miles on my way home, the brakes did not appear to be working right whenever I pulled to a stop light.
I pulled over and checked the master cylinder to make sure it had plenty of fluid in the system because they felt soft,
I got under the truck to check all of the tires to make sure I was not leaking fluid and to my surprise on the rear left side they had not
installed the drum over the brakes pads. I had no rear brake engagement at all.
I called the store and asked to speak to the store manager, after I made him aware of the situation he wanted me to drive the truck
back to the store, I asked him if he was going to pay for any accident that I might have because of the lack of brakes.
He reluctantly sent a tow truck to pick up my truck, once I got back to the shop one of the mechanics stated that they had found an
extra drum and did not know where it had come from. I guess they thought it was funny.
That is why never in hell would I ever have any work done on my vehicles at Pep Boys.

You have to call around and find out what type of tire machine the shops use.

The only touchless in my general area was town fair tires. They did a great job and at the time I had just refinished a set of ASA revolutions including paint and they were perfect so I was super nervous. All that melted away once I saw the machine and the tech was gentle... they have camera in bay so you can watch them work on your car.

    Good luck!

Not another one ! Im getting really tired of reading posts from guys who are not savvy enough to realize NOT to go to a place like Pep Boy, Sears or some local garage. Only to find that if they were lucky enough to not have their wheels damaged , they end up with vibrations that the installer can never rectify. Large diameter wheels NEED special equipment to mount tires properly without damages to rims. They also needs to be road forced balanced to insure the tires are balanced in conjunction with the wheels. Go onto Hunter GSP.com. Put in you zip code. They will find shops in your location that will do the job properly. Failure to do so can cause significant problems
