Question B7 Clutch Pedal Spring Removal

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So while I was installing my new boost gauge, I had my kick panel removed (piece under steering column) to install the tubing and I noticed that the clutch has a spring on the back of it. Audi calls it an "Over-Center Spring". Has anyone tried to remove that spring? The B7 clutch has a somewhat artificial feel to it and I'm curious to if removing that spring will yield more feel or feedback during clutch engagement and a more direct and "mechanical" feel. Thanks gents.

It would be the white spring in this picture

It will do the opposite, in the A4 the over center spring makes the pedal harder. For example I'm putting a B7 S4 over center spring on my pedal to make it softer because I run a B7 RS4 clutch kit and our spring is too stiff once coupled with that clucth kit.

It's not the weight I'm referring to, it's clutch feel, not weight. There's very little clutch engagement feedback, I want to know if removing the spring will increase feedback, regardless of weight.

Thats just the way the clutch is. Removing the spring isn't a great idea, but go ahead and try. No reason you can't do it ans see what its like without it...

Lots of people swap the spring assembly out for an S4 or RS4 spring as those feel a bit stiffer and I've heard they give you a bit more feel on the pedal. I agree the stock pedal feel is a bit muddy, my b6 had better pedal feel I felt, but part of that is just the way the hydraulics are.

Wouldn't a stiffer spring make it feel more artificial?

I'm not sure you understand how the spring works.

As mentionned earlier, there's no stiffer spring than the oem A4 over center spring. The S4 is softer and the RS4 even softer to compensate for the stiffer pressure plate.

But like CW said, remove it and tell us how it goes.

Oh, Oh, Oh, I gotcha, had a blonde moment for a minute there. Sorry about that. How much do those spring assemblies go for?

    A4 2.0t and 3.2 have the part number: 8E0721403B
    S4 and RS4 is 4F0721409

They're both in the $25-30 range.

    ^^I thought S4 and RS4 differed.

    I think its B6 S4 and B7 S4 that differ finally

Well there was a vin split in mid 2005 for the S4. So likely b6 vs b7s came with different ones. They're all basically interchangeable so I see no reason to go with the old model in the b6's.

So just to post what I found. I pulled that spring out earlier this week and took it for a drive... What I found is, yes, the clutch pedal is very light, but yes you also get increased engagement point feedback. The only real downside is that the pedal has some dead play during the first 1/2" of travel. Needless to say, I reinstalled the spring and I'm gonna try out the S4 spring and see what happens
