Dealer selling S4 won't allow PPI

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Been on the hunt for a B8 S4 for a few months. Finally found one at a Chevy dealer about an hour from me. Car checks out on paper: low miles for the year, very clean inside & out, one owner, feels mechanically sound. Having owned three Audis I've become a bit cautious and would still like to have a PPI completed by the neighboring Audi dealer. Upon requesting this the dealer says they cannot allow it due to previous incidents with PPIs.

Just looking for some opinion on whether I'm overly paranoid here or I should walk away. Thoughts?

Devil's advocate, can't you buy, get inspected and return the car if it didn't meet your expectations? Assuming that the dealer has a return policy. For example CarMax has a 5 day return policy

    This or walk.

When I bought my car I had a 7 day return policy. Slammed the shit out of the car and had an inspection.

Also contact AoA before hand and give them the VIN. They can provide you everything they have on file for the car.

I found my S4 out of state, 600 miles away, so I called the local Audi dealer with the VIN and they looked up the service record and the warranty parts replaced (mechatronics, T-stat, etc...). But I've never heard of a big name dealership like Chevy not allowing PPI inspections, if they were an honest dealer they would encourage it. I wouldn't trust it, another one will come along. I waited 2yrs to find the right S4

I hear you guys. Bit of a bummer. Dealer claims they've had issues in the past with more than one car being returned damaged after PPI. I could understand this if I was taking it to some guys home garage, but the fact that they won't allow me to take it to an Audi dealer down the street is a bit concerning.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Concerning indeed. If you make it clear that this is the only reason you are walking and they don't cave, then keep walking.

Offer to have the tech come to the dealer for the inspection.

A local Honda store has a 997 C4S on the lot and that's what they suggested when I asked their PPI policy

The fact they are denying you taking it to an actual Audi dealer is concerning??? A private PPI company I can see them being hesitant if they've had previous issues. As suggested above, see if you can find a tech/PPI company willing to inspect at the offering dealer's location. If they deny that, then definitely walk away....... they are hiding something.

85% chance there is something wrong with the S4 you are interested in. I can't understand why the dealer would refuse. Sounds very suspicious. If I were in your shoes, I would trust my gut instinct and walk away. Even if there is nothing wrong with it, that Chevy dealer does not deserve your business. There will be other used S4's to look at.

LOL! I am not surprised that a dealer will not allow PPI joy rides.

I would look for a CPO at an Audi dealer, or find out if your state has a return period so you can have a post-purchase inspection done.

Personally, I would be worried that a Chevy mechanic tried to fix/repair/tune up the S4.

    Good luck!

Exactly. OP, walk away; you hold all of the power, the moment you say its a deal breaker they will realize they lost the sale. Being the end of the year, they will want you back, but know that you can always find another.

Based off your sig, I can see why you're concerned. I also had two B5's and a B7, all of which I've dumped more money than I'd like to remember into. The B8's are proving to be much more reliable than previous generations.

Why don't you give us the specs on the car. Year, color, trim level, trans, mileage, etc and we'll see if it's really worth it or not.

Yeah - I feel like no PPI = dealer is shady...

But they've stated the concern to be that they've had issues with cars being taken for PPI and returned with damage - so work with that and ask if their tech can drive the car over to AUDI and supervise inspection process - If they control the car during the PPI - they ensure it's not damaged. If they won't allow that then the only other assumption is they are hiding damage/issues.

They may very well not want to deal with it - why - because the S4 sells itself - and there is always some fool that falls for it's glory and won't care about any other details..... So they know they'll sell the car and can do it easily....

Question is do you want to deal with a dealer that's not buyer friendly?

Edit: Based on limited specs that price seems a little high as well....

I would speak to store manager, express the feelings of what you want and if they can't figure out a reasonable way to make it happen that you have x feelings. There has to be a handful of divers there, that could take the car in, not to mention 100 or so tow trucks to make it all happen without you even diving it. The fact your willing to pay to have it done should be enough proof your interested in the car.

My feeling is they know something might be wrong, or worried it will come back with a laundry list of items needing repair and you won't buy it
