    Audi rotors can't be resurfaced?

Apologize in advance if this has been covered. Searched various terms and didn't find my answer. Got my 35k service done today and the service advisor says that my brake pads are at 3mm so it's time to replace. I told him I wasn't going to get it done at the deal but for shits and giggles asked how much it would cost. He told me $1250. I laughed and told him I expected it to be high but that seemed absurd. I had been quoted ~$300 when I looked into it at 30k miles and I would go with that shop. He told me the reason it is so high is that the rotors have to be replaced also because Audi rotors can not be resurfaced.Sounds like BS to me so I wanted to check with you guys. I would have called the brake shop but I picked up the car late in the day and the shop is closed.

Are your rotors cross drilled and slotted? Even if you had to replace a set in the front upgraded pads and rotors 500 on ebay 100 bucks to install them.

Whatever the Premium Plus comes with stock. I don't believe them to be either cross drilled or slotted.

Tried pulling the same thing on me today as well at my 25k when I tried having them install new pads just to eliminate the squeal.

Then no, just order some new pads for the car and have the brake shop turn your rotors for you. You'll be out the door for less then 300.

Thanks. That's what I figured. Didn't make sense that every time you had to get new pads you'd have to get new rotors as well. I've owned several different brands of cars and this is my 3rd Audi and I'd never heard anything like that.

Thanks for the offer but I don't need them. Your A7 looks incredible BTW.

They tired that with me 2 years ago, I ordered the ebc green stuff pads plus you need a 1 brake sensor had my rotors turned and I've been good since. I'm at 43k now. Maybe in 3-6 months I'll need new pads and rotors.

The service department is in the business of selling parts. They also recommend changing rotors if they're too worn because by the time the second set of pads are used up, the rotors are thinner than the recommended minimum.

I changed rotors last month. The front rotors were 34 mm thick and the minimum was 31.5 mm. The rear rotors were 22 mm thick and the minimum was 20 mm. Audi rotors can be resurfaced but they may end up close to the minimum thickness.

They would not fit, too large. S7 sized front rotors only fit the S7 and S6. The rear rotors fit the S6, S7 and RS7.

$1250? That's cheap for a dealer. No reason rotors can't be turned unless min Thickness is passed. And our pads are very agressive. But u r only biding time. Eventually u will replace them before ur second set of pads wears out. Short term u save money...long term u pay labor twice.

my mercedes dealer wont replace pads without replacing rotors either absolutely ridiculous, but thats their policy, not sure if its MB USA policy or just this dealer.

Was going through a stack of receipts and came across the invoice for my brake service and realized I never update this. The brake place I went to charged me $460 for new brakes and rotors. Turns out he couldn't resurface them either. Either way he charge a little bit more than 1/3 what the dealership was charging.

A couple weeks ago, i replaced my rotors and pads, using slotted and drilled rotors with ceramic pads from http://brakeperformance.com. $400 for the set as described. I did the job myself, and a week later took the car to Florida and back for Christmas. Over 1,200 miles on it in a short period of time, and I am very pleased so far.

Sorry don't mean to hijack the thread OP but since we were on the topic of rotors I have a separate question. The rotors on my 2016 A6 prestige are warped already at only 15k miles. I'm looking to replace them with some cross drilled and slotted ones but the place I want to get them from only has 2014 A6 prestige in stock. Will the 2014 rotors fit my 2016? Thanks everyone.

Brake pedal pulsation does not always mean that the rotors are warped.

It might save you the cost of a brake job.

To find out if the rotors are the same for the 2014 and 2016 A6, go to Rockauto.com and look up the part numbers for both years.

On most OEM Audi/VW rotors the minimum thickness spec is 2mm thinner than they started out as (1mm per side). At the time that most pads get to their minimum thickness the rotors are at their minimum as well. Typically this happens at around 50k in standard use (though this depends on the driving habits and to some extent M/T vs A/T). Brakes on the RS cars tend to wear sooner than that as well. An independent shop can typically save a decent amount over the dealership though I do recommend a European specialist shop over a generic franchise brake shop.
