Thanks for your previous reply. I appreciate all the info I can get. Which brings me to my next question. What rotors are you going to use with 17z's. I looked into this option but couldn't find any with the correct hat size. Other than 2pc rotors which are out of my budget.

I am using Volvo rotors I forgot what model but if you look around on here there is a big brake page set up that tells you everything. But not for the a8. But if my a8 brakes will bolt on to my a4 b6 a4 b7 and a6 c6 I believe it will bolt onto my a8:)! I'll keep posting!

Ok so I want to update and let you know all the trouble I went through so you don’t make the same mistake:)!

Don’t get a allroad Manuel trans! It has the wrong flange for the axles it uses a 88mm flange. Every other 01e uses a 108mm axle flange. Also all road trans has a 4.30 final drive which means I needed the rear diff to match. If you use any other the final drive is less around 4.11 that translates to a lower rpm at higher gear better fuel eco.

Side note I am not saying don’t use the all road trans but you have to make lots more little changes. Driving the car is nice with 4.30 final drive but I would prefer less just FYI.

On to axles:) I’ve tried every length out there lol the only length that works is
1995 Audi urs6/s4 passenger side axle it measures 26” 5/16 in length buy two it come with the 108mm axle flange! I got mine speacial order from auto zone 75$:) but you still need a 1” spacer for the passenger side.

Engine to trans bolt up with clutch.
When I took the auto flywheel off there is a 1mm shin that bolts between the crank and fly wheel (keep this) also press out the auto bearing in the crank I used the grease method pack lots of grease in the hole use slightly smaller round something! I used a extension flipped around it was the perfect size. And smack it with a hammer until bearing pops out;) use 1mm spacer new bolts I used findenza duel mass light weight flywheel. It comes with a pilot bearing installed. I got a b5 rs4 clutch( advanced auto motion Scott hooked it up!) new throw out bearing. Now to engine to tranny you need to use the 2.7tt aluminum spacer I had to notch it for one bolt on the starter. Use the stock auto starter. Works like a dream no issues.

    2001 audi a8l 6 speed swap

Now shifter. If you can get a urs4 shifter base it work goods only slight modification.
Butt I used the allroad shifter assembly you don’t need the plastic box it comes with cut the car aluminum shifter hole in car away only leave the the 4 bolt holes take a 1/8” thick plate steel drill the 4 holes to match with car. Get square tubing I got mine at Lowe’s cut 1” sections and weld a nut on top of square sections. Bolt the 4 pices to the shifter base you have place shifter center on plate tack weld the for square sections on plate. Unbolt shifter then finish welding the square sections on the plate. Easy
My welder is cheap Lincoln 175 mig I payed a friend 250$ for it and it has made this swap easy. You need to cut and extend shifter links it’s easy cut rods in half buy pice of rolled steel (Lowe’s) that fits nicely inside of tube bolt rods to softer and transmission center shifter in car put tranny in neutral the tack weld rod in place. Adjust shifter arms untill you can go through all the gears! Then done

Next pedal assembly buy a brake pedal off eBay cut pedal pads to shape so you can put rubber feet on them then installs brake pedal on pedal box it already has a post for a clutch easy! Buy a oem master and usp sells a steel braided clutch line and slave that’s all you need for the clutch. Cut some steel plate
To sandwage pedal box aluminum section it’s too thin! Install brake booster vary important to installed before you cut the master hole. Hole saw your hole for the master make a support like I did in the photos. Now when you drill you pin hole for the clutch put pedal mid travel, center master arm on pedal mark it then drill. This is so at fully extend the master arm won’t bind.

    Drive shaft.
bolt in car measure length cut drive shaft extend it weld it make sure it’s true! Then done:)!

    Ecu
You need to make sure yours is a ME 7.1.1
This ecu has a Manuel fine in it. I sent mine out to get flashed

Wiring. Scott at advanced automotion has a wire harness to take care of reverse lights and starting plug in and your ready
Speedometer extend the 3 pin plug yellow brown wire and yellow wire. Plug into 3 pin connector on left side of tranny easy

Remove tcu tuck wire out of way
    Reflash abs module for Manuel
    Reflash cluster for Manuel
    Then start car and drive

Great stuff, I'm very interested in this since my auto trans is stuck in limp mode and I'd truly hate to get rid of her for that reason.

The D2 S8 has a 4.11 rear diff. The A8 has something taller like a 3.83 if memory serves, it often doesn't. So pretty much any 01E has 4.11 forward diff, except the allroad...ouch. S8? GTG, A8? swap to a 4.11 rear.

Two mods you may want to consider for an 01E: 1) a 60/40 rear bias center. Pretty cheap, and 2) a taller 6th gearset for lower highway rpms. A bunch of the European TDI boxes have them.

4:1 rear Bias Diff for $300 scratch that, $250

It's always nice to support the vendors that support us. Unfortunately, that usually means paying a premium. But not this time.

I've seen this same mod elsewhere (JHM & STaSiS) for $300. But Advanced Automotion offers them for $250. He also supports 01E swaps among others, and I think he used to offer a one piece carbon fiber driveshaft for this conversion for $700.

Anyway, here is the rear bias center diff info:

    https://advancedautomotion.com/shop/...roducts_id/336

(Edit 2: I mistakenly linked to a different vendor with a higher price )

Edit 1: I can't find the one piece CF driveshaft anymore, but he also sells a two piece driveshaft for 6 speed conversions for $645:

    https://advancedautomotion.com/shop/...roducts_id/329

    Have fun.

Well I'm not getting my parts back seems like the guy is long gone... as far as I can tell I think he has the engine covers coils ecm and other things, I do remember him saying the computers were flooded with water and when I bought the car the guy told me a car wash did that. Those were toast either way. Is there a parts source that you would recommend me to buy from.

Did you buy a specific S8 kit or was it an S4 kit and you adapted it or added parts to it? I asked WolfAutoParts about the availability of an S8 kit and they sent me an S4 kit link.

    Thanks,

1999 AUdi A8 -Computer Engine - 4.2 liter - $25 in PA. There are a bunch on there for under $50. You lucky bastard, you don't have to deal with Immobilizer which debuted in 2000. I wiped out my ECU & TCU from a downpour, and had to get the secret 4 digit pin to pair the ECU to the Instrument Cluster which is the brains of the Immobilizer system.

I don't know what , IF ANY, pairing coding is required to get a used ECU to talk to your car. Do you have a VAG COM cable?

I bought a swap off an allroad.

Justin just buy the clutch new. The tranny from advanced automotion also the axles from them. And buy a matching rear end off eBay!
If you buy the whole thing like I did I only used the tranny the rear end and the shifter. That’s it! Don’t wast your money. Call Scott and advanced automotion he sells everything you need with warranty. Even has a wire harness to convert Manuel to auto.

I do not but it is in my to buy list, I've been planning on getting it since I have a troublesome BMW, even more now because this swap looks like factory and I dont think it will be too complicated. Just need to source out the parts

Built these tranny mounts:) but need to change out the bushing the car sounds like a race car now with the noise in the cabin from the tranny
    IMG_3619.jpg

Bought these rubber mounts. They will be better. I could have bought the auto 01e mounts for the tranny but the price was to high. I had the metal to make a custom mount now I have these bmw mounts that were only 50$

The web site your looking for is https://advancedautomotion.com/shop/

Scott is the owner and he has done this swap before. I bought the rs4 clutch from him. I should have bought the axles rear end and tranny from him. Along with the wiring harness.

The S8 rear end is fine for the swap though from what i've read.

    So one needs the following:

    1. trans, axles, custom drive shaft (Advanced Automotion)
    2. clutch/pp/flywheel (preferably B5RS4)
    3. shifter (a6 or URs4?)
    4. wiring harness (Advanced Automotion)
    5. Clutch master and slave cylinder
    6. Extra brake pedal and clutch pedal pad
    7. Manual shifter interior trim
    8. ecu reprogram via VAG COM

Anything you can think of that I am missing?

The drive shaft you can have a machine shop make. I used the a6 shifter but only used the top pice. I made the bottom plate.
How good are you with cutting and welding metal? Before I started I had only welded a few times. Master and clutch from usp motor sports. And get the -3an steel breaded line just the one line not both. I got both but didn’t need it. If I would do it again I would keep the dual mass flywheel from the 2.7tt drivability would be softer not as instant.lol

They don’t make a Manuel interior trim. I used the stock one I had and modified a boot to fit. Pretty easy. As far as tranny mounts I would not cut my sub frame I would just make mounts to fit. Kinda like I did in the photos.
The s8 rear end will work. You don’t have to get it. Any a6 or s4 rear end would work as long as it matches the final drive ratio. My all road is 4.35! I am looking for anouther tranny and rear end with a final drive of 4.11 (s8 s4 a6). Allroad is the only one with the 4.35. I didn’t know that when I got mine lol.

Last but most important thing check your ecu! Make sure it’s a ME 7.1.1

Also sorry you don’t need his tdi axles. It’s the easiest way! But I have axle spacers made at a random machine shop. Check your tranny axle flanges there are two types. A 108mm and a 88mm. The 88mm only came on the allroad.
    The 108mm came on the a6 and s6 tranny’s.
The 1995 urs6 right side axle is 50$ at autozone (cheap Chinese) but still good it measures 26” 5/16. Buy two one will fit with out a spacer on the left side but you will need a 1” spacer on the right side.

Hope this helps! I wish I had help when I did mine!!!!

Ps label everything! I mixed up my starter leads and my car would not start took me two weeks to find the issue lol.!

Thanks for the help and the tips! I appreciate it!

Does anyone know if the drive shaft spacers are available online anywhere? I've checked around at a few shops and they either don't seem interested or want to only make 100 of them!

So:)! Car is perfect fixed my abs and traction control. Had to use vag com and code my abs and cluster:)! Only thing left is rear 02 sensors need to be deleted from Ecuador to get rid of my check engine light! Once I coded my abs my cruise control works:)! Still need to wire my clutch switch to my brake switch for cruise shut off with clutch depressed.
Next on the list is to build my exhaust and make custom motor mounts. Next year I plan on swapping in a s8 motor for the extra hp and doing the flash for the 400hp tune.

Been driving it and waiting for the weather to get better. I have a new tranny going in and a s8 4.11 rear end. Should fix my high cruise rpm.

Also going to put on the 17z brembos got to make a relocation bracket to make them fit.

And soon will be remaking the whole exhaust system headset back. Should free up some hp:)! And this summer I will be buying a s8 motor to swap in!

Very clean sir! I love watching your progress. I’ll be doing a manual swap after I gather all the hard parts. Your thread will definitely be helpful!

All in due time my friend!

Debating on st coils, air bags or hr springs with new bilsteine shocks.

I already have the 20mm spacers I had them on but took them off. They will go back on when I decide the suspension route.
