Lithium Battery upgrade, update the energy management system?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am looking to upgrade my 2016 A3 stock battery to this Shorai Lithium Battery http://shoraipower.com/lfx36l3-bs12-p130. In my owners manual is states "Your authorized dealer must code the battery in the energy management system to enable you to use the energy management functions correctly after replacing the battery."

Has anyone replaced their battery for this weight reduction or can anyone confirm if this will work? I have already done the research and read results where people have used the Shorai for daily driving and even cold weather for years. The great thing about it is it only weighs 5lbs. I am unsure what the factory battery weight but I am guessing 40-50 lbs.

    Thanks in advance,

    Lusky

only post I've seen where someone replaced with a lithium battery was from westwest888, everyone gave him shit for it, but it worked.

The A3 and S3 do not have battery management. Nothing needed other than swapping the battery. I've run dry cell odysse batteries in my weekend toy for years. I've been considering going with a LI battery next.

It actually came in today. Finished installing and letting it charge like recommended in the instructions. I bought the Shorai charger designed for it but it says a normal charger will work.

The factory battery weighs 43.6lbs, this one is 4.96.

I do have pics but not sure I can upload them in my mobile?

I cut the factory connectors off both + and - and added the circle eye ones so I could mount directly although the battery did come with 2 types of moutning brackets(so 3 options total). Once I finished I let it charge until the light turned green. Started the car reset the tpms and clock, radio presets and other stuff were still there and drove around. I currently have it temp secured and wrapped with the factory soft cover/heat sheild and I will finish up tomorrow.

I figured out I could easily relocate it to the trunk passenger side compartment. I took that plastic box out of that back area. The plastic box big space/section was empty and the bottom has what appears to be a small amp. I cut out all the tabs and sanded them smooth with a Dremel in the big space/section. Next I wrapped the Shorai battery with the included single sided stick foam and was able to get such a snug fit that it will not fall out and I can still push it out from the spaces in the back/bottom. I currently have it installed in this plastic box under the hood in the factory battery location until I can run the wires to the rear compartment next week. I will be able to put the amp back in the small section of this plastic box. While the battery is fine under the hood it should be better in the rear not being around all that heat.

Reducing your battery weight to 5lbs.. then moving it to the rear kinda defeats the purpose. Now if you took the full weight battery and moved it to the rear.. that would be better. (F/R ratio) Moving just 4 lbs to the rear with all the extra weight with longer cables isn't worth it. Only reason people move the battery to the rear is for a better F/R weight bias. Those batteries can take more abuse than under the hood will ever put them under.

Post some picks of your install. Love to see how the battery looks under the hood. Also any updates on how its working.

Its hard for me to believe I would be better off adding more weight to the rear after removing 38 lbs of weight from the front. My F/R ratio has still improved and overall I dropped 38 lbs. For example, are you saying I should go ahead and add some dead weight to my trunk? Heat is the biggest enemy of a Lithium Battery and that is the real reason I am moving it to the back.

"Lithium-ion suffers from stress when exposed to heat, so does keeping a cell at a high charge voltage. A battery dwelling above 30°C (86°F) is considered elevated temperature and for most Li-ion a voltage above 4.10V/cell is deemed as high voltage."

Any idea how much do you think all the new cable will weigh? I will remove the factory battery base mount too if it is at least a few pounds.

As far working everything has been fine. I did research first and found some people who kept going through the Braillie every year or less even following the maintenance reccomendations and currently going 3 years + and no signs of failure on the Shorai.

great stuff!!!! Please update us as to normal everyday real world situations.... Does the car crank or start faster than the OEM battery as this one has only 540CCA. Looks like you have done your research.... If I plan to get this I too will mount it in the trunk. Also, with the weight reduction, can you feel it?

I have driven it everyday for since installing on 06-16, short trips, starts and stops and also 25+ miles then it sat for 9 hours in the sun and every time cranks like normal. Car starts the same there is no sign of any difference. As far feeling a difference I never really pushed it yet since its not permanently mounted. Once I get it in the rear compartment I may remove the factory battery try to see if its a weight reduction as well. I left the trunk open (trunk light) while taking apart the rear to get the plastic box out to prep it and no sign of drain.

If you do this don't be alarmed when you start the car for the first time and all the warning lights go off and nothing seems to work right once you drive about 100' you can then store your tpms again and all the other lights go away. A friend with an S4 who works at Audi says this is normal and his car did the same when disconnecting and reconnecting the same factory battery.

for track use only, I want to switch from AGM to lithium battery on my 2018 TTS, is this a plug&play matter, or do I have to update the energy management system, and if so, how?
the current OEM battery is a 70 Ah/ 760 CCA while the new lithium battery is 20 Ah/400 CCA, so big differences in terms of power (and weight ;))
    any advice?

Yep... This is exactly what I did. Lets me keep a cheap battery, gets the weight off the nose and helps this under steering pig handle a lot better.
