Question B8.5, what's the OEM engine oil brand?

I will most likely have to add oil soon but since the oil inside the engine is still the OEM one (car has only 5.5k miles), I need to know what brand to add since (I guess) it's better not to mix brands?

Its not a big deal to mix brands, so I wouldnt worry too much.

But for many years, most VAG products have come with Castrol Syntec.

If you look at the oil filler cap, it has CASTROL embossed on it. At least my 3 B8 S4s did. But I had Valvoline put in at last oil change. Add Mobil 1 European formula when I need to add. No reason why you can't mix FULL synthetic brands. In fact, I have heard that Mobil 1 full synthetic is not truly 100% synthetic. Doesn't matter as long as it protects as well as advertised. Audi will do a FREE oil change @5k miles for you if they have not done one before.

Interesting, I didn't know about the free oil change. Will call a dealer soon, thanks!

Meanwhile, I guess you guys would recommend Castrol Syntec? Or is there better brands out there? For reference, in the Subaru world you can very well use Valvoline or Castrol, but the best oil brands are normally considered to be Motul and Gulf..
What would be the equivalent "Best" in the Audi world?

After the dealer's 5k free oil change I started doing it myself and have been using Mobil 1 0W-40 (on the Audi/VW approved list). FWIW, the engine appears to drink none of this oil for the ~8k miles I have been using it. It can also be had relatively inexpensively around here (southeast PA) - I found it for $23/5qt. jug last weekend at Walmart so I bought two jugs.

You can pretty much top of with any oil that meets VW 502.00.505.00, but yes OEM is Castrol Syntetic 5W-40. Don't know what the deal is in Canada, but yes here in the US, the 5k mile service is included with the purchase of the car. Also, my dealer and my indy shop top of the oil for free. I don't always take advantage of that, though, as sometimes it's just more convenient to pick up a quart at the local parts store and I also carry a quart in the trunk for emergencies.
