Thanks so much for the pic, when the trim removal tools are in I'm going to undertake the retrofit.

Yes, it's not there unless you already have the 3g+ unit

I got most of the things done but not sure how to run the GSM antenna cable from the passenger fuse box to the MMI unit. Didn't see a way to get the cable from fuse box to the glove box then onto the MMI unit. Please help.

That did it, besides having Component Protection removed from dealership do I need to do any coding? Navigation still thinks I'm at the same area as that of the previous MMI unit owner and showing 2G.

Yes probably on the coding depending on what you had before.

Just drive the car around to fix the nav. Mine did the same thing. The 2g depends on what rev you have and what SIM card you installed.

Yeah it looks like it's using the onboard maps. Night mode is selectable in settings.

I tried to get Bluetooth streaming and nothing came from the car's speakers. Waze instructions are also not going through. I can make a call using Bluetooth and the navigation instructions are audible. I read from other posts that Bluetooth streaming should work without removing the Component Protection. Do I have a bad MMI unit?

Are you able to adjust the volume on the mmi? if cp is active it will say unavailable.

You can't stream anything to the HU with CP on. Go get it removed.

When changing the volume I get "unavailable" so I have an appointment to get CP removed this Thursday. On another note, I went to ATT to get a data SIM card and they insist I need to go through Audi. Do I go to another location and ask for an ipad SIM card? My MMI Unit has a G at the end, which I think supports both T-Mobile & ATT.

You can use an att iPad SIM card in your G just like I do. I have an iPad mini and just got a sim adapter from amazon to fit the format of the mmi.

I have a WiFi only iPad but went to three different AT&T stores and they all said I need to check with dealership. They said the sim card is tied to the ipad IMEI so if I put it in the car it won't be recognized. I was looking at the Dataconnect Pass plan if it matters.

On the 6th store (3 AT&T & 3 T-Mobile) I found someone who knows WTH he's doing. Got a post paid data SIM card for $20/month for 2 GB, I hope that's enough. Several seconds after the SIM card was inserted Google Maps came on. Got CP removed earlier today and everything is working! Total cost came out to $475 including the MMI unit/panel, fakra cable & CP removal. Thanks everyone for your help.

Woohoo. Nice! 2gb should be plenty but you can watch it under the phone section in mmi.

Is it normal for the map to automatically zoom out to either 1 or 1.5 miles while I'm driving? Even when I zoom in to half a mile or 300 yards it would reset to 1 or 1.5 miles by itself. It didn't do this last week even when I wasn't using the navigation fuction.

Thank for the concise first post OP, I cannot say enough how helpful it was for cleaning up the inevitable DTCs.

I would suggest adding tips in the first post for people to read before undertaking this retrofit:
    1. Make sure you have a trim tool, a pair of radio keys, and ample time to proceed slowly/methodically
    2. Make sure you enable the green menu on your existing MMI before starting. Using your cellphone, take pics of every page of each of the following settings (will help you immensely later with DTC 03157, which you will very likely get):
      1. green menu / car / cardevextdevicelist
      2. green menu / car / cardevextdevicelist2
      3. green menu / car / carmenuoperation
    3. Some of the cables that plug in to the MMI are very short (too short in my opinion). Specifically, the yellow fakra d cable and the one with the green connector that goes into the quadlock. Unless you want to deal with this twice, and you don't, consider purchasing the GSM antenna cable in advance and running it before starting the physical MMI swap. {aside, I'm trying to find a vendor on Amazon in the USA who will make these, but the closest I've gotten is fakra z (not keyed connector, okay) straight jack to fakra z straight jack - not right angle}

Pasternack is an alternate source for the antenna cable (made in USA, unlike RG174 the LMR100 is a communications coax cable around the same physical size and is low loss):

Thanks for the consolidated info OP. Got mine installed last night and CP removed today. Still waiting for my cable from China, but everything seems to be working well. Pleasantly surprised with how it pairs with my Pixel XL, getting more info than I was expecting with bluetooth music streaming.

If you're adventurous like me and eventually update your MMI 3GP to version 942 yourself, google earth will be broken afterwards. There is a fix script available from the dealer via TSB 2044940/2. It's a download of a tiny archive file, copied to an empty SD card and run once your MMI is fully booted up. In other words, definitely not something that should require more than an hr's time billed by the dealer.

I don't plan to buy a data plan for the car- do I need to run the fakes cable?

Also, I was feeling adventurous and did not capture the green settings of the original head unit. If I get CP removed on the new unit, can I throw the old one back in and grab those settings (or will the car now be locked to the new HU)?

cable is for the cell, so if you dont plan on using it, then you dont need it.

The CP is coded in the radio with the car info, so you can always swap back and forth, or if you sell your car pull it out and pop your old mmi back in.

Would this be relevant for folks outside of the US?
Understand that the 3G/4G bands used in other continents are different, hence would require a different head unit.
That's the only thing holding me back.

MMI 3G+ Conversion from MMI 3G(2010-2012) DIY with Component Protection removed.

I was able to complete this conversion. I originally ordered the head unit and the controls from the notoriously bad eBay provider.

Turns out both units were bad. I ordered a second set from two different sources with success.

My head unit was said to be from a us SQ5, but was actually a Canadian SQ5. This unit did not have the sim slot but is in fact a 3G plus.

I was planning on using my phone as a hotspot anyways so this wasn't a deal breaker.

Success! Everything is working fine with the exception of a few coding things and the strange numbers in the lower left hand corner.

I get get a TMC logo once or twice but now it's just a pair of numbers. It seems to be a signal.

    Total cost of about 450.

Also this unit did not require component protection removal, or updating my radio. Everything works.

    Great post OP, thank you.

Quick question, I am upgrading from a non MMI to 3G+, it's going to be intense I know. My question relates to the ADS and traction control switches seen above. I only have sport diff and TSC, my MMI has ADS on left and TSC plus hill assist and something else. So basically I need new switches for it to be accurate. My switches are currently below the shifter where the MMI controls will be and are physically different than the ones shown above.

Any idea where to get the proper switches? I can buy from the dealer if needed but need part numbers. They won't find the right switches with my VIN and can't find shit without the VIN.

I can get pics tomorrow if needed, my post is probably confusing...

I'd look for used switches. Ebay can be a good source.

    From OP:

    "MMI-Controls: 8T0 919 611 C WFX or 8T0 919 611 L WFX (with Start/Stop button) or 8T0 919 611 B WFX (without Start/Stop button)"

Can someone tell me what the difference between the "C" and "L" are?
Is an auto transmission a different part number?

    Thanks!
